  • Pruning is one of the most important practices in the vineyard to create vine balance, the balance between vegetation and fruit production to achieve the grape yield, maturity, and quality desired. With too little vegetation, vines may not have the capacity to ripen the fruit, and with too much vegetation, the fruit can be shaded, the vine focuses on vegetative growth rather than fruit ripening, and again the fruit can be perceived as under-ripe or dilute and green. Pruning also localizes the fruit into an area that will be easy to manipulate for sun exposure, disease control, and harvest.

The renewal must be in the side (left or right)and down fruting cane so you can stop growing the plant above fruting wire

can you tell me how far apart your 4x4 post are and how many plants you plant in-between each post.

In one acre with that spacing, you're able to plant approximately 2722 vines per acre. It all depends how long your vineyard row is. For example: If your row is 224' in length. You would be able to plant 56 vines if you planted them 4' apart. You would be to train the vine either cane or spur pruned. If you were to xhoose spur cordon. You would have a bilateral cordon with 3 to 4 per Cordon. I hope this helps you. Cheers

This has been one of the hardest concepts to wrap my head around while taking my Level 3 WSET course. Thanks very much for clarifying things up!
