Love to see Carol train dogs. It is so encouraging that she mentioned that any dog can learn. So many online trainers make videos with young dogs or their already trained dogs. I have rescues. They are behind the 8 ball in training when I start and really don’t need to be reminded that they missed their puppy training years. I am always looking for new ways for them to learn and have fun. Great job Carol.
@Bonilady we adopted a 13 year old Pom and he was still spunky until the day he passed. Not sure if this is a Pom thing, but he went crazy for watermelon!🍉 I miss my watermelon eating buddy!
Carol is such a good trainer! She’s so gentle and hypes the dog up so much when they make any progress towards the final goal. I’d love to have someone who cheered me up anytime I make any progress in my life hahaha! The dogs and us, love you Carol!
My first GSD Max used to LOVE Playing hide the ball...Id tell him to go hide and he'd go in the other room and sit while I hid his ball.....Id say ''OK. Come find it'' and he'd come running in,....,he'd always look in the last place first...and would remember the order in sequence. Carol is a GREAT trainer!! I love watching her train. Thanks McCann Training, for putting out these free videos...Youre really helping alot of people and dogs who cant afford a trainer!! Much appreciated!!
I play the find it game with my dog all the time, but instead of the toy I used me lol and I think it’s helped bring more value to me toward my dog! He loves in when I tell him to wait by a door or something and then I close the door and I go hide, and he waits for my sister to open the door and tell him “ go find Melanie”
My English Cocker LOVES to play hide and seek....it is her favorite game. When she is bored she will rehearse her favourite hiding places by taking the toy she is playing with and hiding it herself in the shoe or on the shelf or bathtub and "finding" it herself...over and over. Over the years, it has become quite sophisticated....if duplicate toys are present she only ever chooses the one that we are playing the game with and I try to find places to hide the toy that require two steps to complete....I hide the toy in a hide-away cover....like the little squirrel hidden in the log and then hide the log, or put it someplace that she has to find the toy by jumping up onto something and retrieving it from beneath a blanket or out of a box. It is absolutely her favourite in the house game and saves my sanity during the long cold winter months.
You rock! As a fellow dog trainer, this is gold! Training can be fun for the human and dog if done right. These exercises are GREAT for the winter months in cold climates.
It's great 😄 forget the dogs- McCann trainers make it interesting and engaging for the owners!! I've been using these videos as a great "motivator" for myself to stop snuggling and go and work with my puppy!! 😁
My 7 year old rescue doesn't care about toys at all, but I may be able to teach her to have fun by adding some treats and giving her something to do. Thanks for sharing your great teaching.
Such great ideas to help us through winter and the busy holiday season! Oh, and some other current challenges that have us spending more time home..... 👍👍
My Lady thank you so much for these joys... my dog just loves them...we have been overtraining on obedience and I recognized a mistake...and needed to retrain myself that training should be fun...the hide and seek is really exciting...started really easy in room like you...now 3 bedrooms and hole house is a seek and find...she is a labrador and just this alone has far exceeded any field exercises we have done...and never seen my pretty girl respond and enjoy anything more...awesome instructions, thank you for helping us have fun.
Instructor Carol here. That’s awesome. Yes - if we are fun we build great relationships with our dogs. Then things come so much easier. And I look to train obedience the same way. My older dogs would rather heel at my side then chase a squirrel. Because they are all behaviours. Whether it’s a fun go find it or heeling or a stay.
Omg. How have I not found this amazing lady until now? Absolutely love the enthusiasm and methods! My pup is gonna appreciate what I learn here! Thank you so much!
Also, it’s been so icy outside here so indoor activities are a lifesaver. I tried walking our rescue pup when it was icy and she pulled me down the entryway stairs. (We shovel but it’s hard to keep it ice free when stuff falls for days.) But boy does she need the activity!!
Thank you for these videos - Carol is so enthusiastic and the dogs are having so much fun. Thats what i admire so much about McCann dogs is everyones dedication to the dogs wellbeing
We play “Easter Basket” every morning with our Mini Aussie. She gets her bkfst meal in a Kong-like ball. She waits in the kitchen while we hide the ball somewhere in the house. When she finds it, she rolls it around & the kibble occasionally falls out. We’re retired, so we spend a lot of time playing games with her.
Hi Carol, Since I watched this video last week, I have introduced all 3 of these in my training classes. The dogs love it AND the dog guardians are so impressed that the dogs really take to it.... The interest from both parties was fantastic. Thank you!
Thank you for this great idea! We have a 5 month old Golden Retriever/Yellow Lab mix and she gets bored with our old asses! It’s 20 below here right now and we’re older and not exactly hyped to walk in this weather. We have arthritis and this is something fun we can do to keep her happy otherwise she’s getting bored with us even though we take her for rides and play fetch in the house (as much as we can with destroying the place).
I need to drink more coffee to be more animated and fun!!! Lol. No wonder your dog is so happy playing with you! I need to step it up!!!! In fact, maybe you can come over and cheer me up! Hahahahaha!
i love the way you interact with the dogs and the audience! you’re so sweet and lively! you just seem like a wonderful lovely person and teacher for us and the dogs. i don’t like other training type videos because they don’t like interact with the dogs in a way i like and they don’t give them help. as soon as i saw you help your baby, i subbed because i believe these type of things should be fun and not so strict for the pups
Thank you for these ideas! Newish dog owner here. My dog had puppies while in foster care, and one of her puppies will stay with us while her owner goes on vacation. My dog is normally very relaxed, but the puppy still has a lot of energy. I’ll use these games with both dogs while the puppy is here. 🐶🐶
Hi Carol, you’re amazing and engaging both with our much loved pooches and us, thank you, thank you. I’ve learned so much from you and my Lakeland Terrier, Toby, is ever so grateful 🐾. I’m working on separation anxiety and it’s a tough one x
This is straight up genius, my dog is really playful and high energy but often when I want to play he is distracted and doesn't have any interest in a toy he can't destroy or squeak.
Everything is awesome! I have enjoyed watching bits and pieces of this project with over the last year or so but the biggest thing I can’t get over is, How is it that your walk in robe now looks 5 times bigger? It’s like the Tardis!!
This was the most useful dog game video I've seen. My dog is an anxious rescue who doesn't play at all and doesn't care about toys whatsoever. For once someone gave some suggestions on ways to get difficult dogs to interact. Thank you so much! The treat thing is a challenge. My dog won't take kibble at all as a treat...and she wont eat plain kibble period. So I have to mix in wet food and bits of chicken breast for her meals...sigh...which makes it impossible to try to use her meal as play time reward. Any ideas? As I said...she's not toy motivated at all.
What are using for treats? Labs and golden retrievers tend to put on weight. I'm looking for something that will help motivate but not put on weight. LOVE your work.
really love your videos and am currently doing your attention workshop! I would love if you could do a video or share any tips on training a dog who is fearful/reactive to outside noises (buses, sirens, etc.).
Go back to basics. My dog pulled on its chain. I told it to sit as soon as i feel pulling. I got the desired result in one session. If you look at agility contests the trainers use yhe wait command before they go and place themselves at a spot and then the dog gets its instructions to move
You need to condition your dog to accept food without snapping. Resource guarding or grabbing can become a real problem later. Try to offer a treat and withhold it with a simple “ No” till her gently takes it from you ands to that with a very happy Yes or other marker and more treats - enough reps of this should get results
This is brilliant thank you!! Our dog just turned 1 and he's always had a short attention span so not fit for long walks outside. This is the first time I've heard that verified because all dogs are different 😭 thank you

We have a 2 months Italian greyhound we always had big dogs he’s a jumper we get so scared she will hurt herself She’s to young for those games all the dogs are so adorable 🥰
I’d think about it twice before teaching my dog opening building doors though. Sometimes you really need your doog to stay behind a closed one. Okay, you can lock it, but I’m talking as a previous dog owner who still have claw marks on several of my doors :o
The nose target game is a very good one! I bet that'd also come in handy training a dog to nose someone to disrupt an anxiety attack or self-harming behaviors.
Great video, thank you! What breeds is Lucy? We adopted a dog a month ago and we've been baffled about what breeds could be in him. But he and Lucy are so alike!😱 Except he is smaller.
I was going to ask the same thing. Coloring & fur type looks a lot like my pup, which we think is black Aussie (we did see the mom) and GSD dad (reported lingering nearby). But Lucy is small & shaped like my guy's mom was.
What is your command word for the nose target and when do you incorporate it? If they are targeting well as she is here, when do you add the word to do this at longer distances?

Dog training IS about motivation and Carol’s exuberance and excitement for training is a motivator for dogs. Let’s all make training FUN!!
I was thinking the same! That’s why I love dog training, it gets ME so enthusiastic and happy! 😂❤️

My 4 month old puppy has learned a lot from yall! Do you have any advice for puppies that snap when they are handled sometimes?
Same problem with mine
Go back to basics. My dog pulled on its chain. I told it to sit as soon as i feel pulling. I got the desired result in one session.
Treat it with something ie toy or treat when it do not snap
and a firm NO and sit command and a jank on the choke chain on NO might work when it does snap
when it snap - no treat -
Follow up with a heel and sit with praise if done correctly (YES Good dog) and a treat
It will soon get the idea
NO means no praise and no treat
YES means all of that praise and treat
Hope it will work - let me know
At first have it on a chain
And teach it the basic commands
Heel
Sit
Down (lay down)
Stand
Wait amd
Stay
Some comment on stay and wait
Stay teach stay and wait on seperate occasions since both involve the dog stay at one place bit your dog may get confusrd so
Stay - let tje dog stay and return back to it
Wait - let the dog wait until you instruct it to come to you or eat its food
If you look at agility contests the trainers use yhe wait command before they go and place themselves at a spot and then the dog gets its instructions to move
I have the same problem with my yorkie. Whenever I try to put his harness on or I try to hold him, he growls and tries to bite me
You need to condition your dog to accept food without snapping. Resource guarding or grabbing can become a real problem later. Try to offer a treat and withhold it with a simple “ No” till her gently takes it from you ands to that with a very happy Yes or other marker and more treats - enough reps of this should get results

I used to play find it with the day's allotment of treats. I'd hide them under a stinky sock in the couch cushions, under a rug, all sorts of places. Started in one room and increased the search area as my dogs got better at it. They loved it.
is there a verbal cue for this as they advance AND how do you tell them what to target (like door, etc?
Those games are a great idea😊
Dogs can hear very well and even are more apt at locating the item when it hits the ground, like sonar.
I love your methods. In the find it game what did you do to the ball to make it more interesting?
Your dog will heart dog this dog
The main issue I’ve had trying to train my 2 dogs….they are not food driven at all and won’t eat any training treats…I’d literally have to cook a steak and cut it up…. So how do I reward? I use my voice, uplifting and praising…but that only works for a few minutes…Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Your Dogs are so cute
I LOVE your training videos Carol! Quick question.. What command could we add to the nose target?
I notice that you train with leads/leashes on in these videos. Do you suggest this is best?
Cheerio? Is that the dog's name? Oh my gosh. What a pretty doggie. He looks like a ton of fun!
What is your command word for the nose target and when do you incorporate it? If they are targeting well as she is here, when do you add the word to do this at longer distances?
Instructor Carol here. You can use “target”, “touch it”, “nose”, “hit it” or anything that comes naturally to you. The theory is to add a command once the dog is performing the exercise with perfection. So once they truly understand it and are reliable in close (say three feet) then I add the verbal and begin to build distance - really slowly.
