    I BUILT A HURDY GURDY
    This video explains the build and how it makes sound and music and gives a demonstration of how this instruments performs with a backing of strings and percussion.
    Well technically its a hurdy gurdy shaped instrument based on the body of an old mandola.
    I wanted an instrument that could provide sound and music for my videos and decided to give it a go. I had no plans or drawings but figured it out as I went along.
    It works well but there is ALOT of getting to know it, adjusting and fine tuning constantly as I play. I am still learning it but it is starting to behave relatively nice.
    Hurdy Gurdys dates back far into the medieval times or even further from eastern Europe and further west. Depctions of simple versions can be found on Psalters from the 11. century.
    This instrument is in the key of C. The main drone string is tuned to a C and the melody string to a G. I used strings from an octave violin. The melody string is the violin A string tuned down to G. The C drone is the violin D string tuned down to C. The A drone is the violin G string tuned up to an A. So there is a little strech to make things work out with the strings I had availible.
    The keys of the melody G string is whole step notes from open G to ABCDEFGA.
    This allows me to play most melodies in the key of C.
    The other drone string is tuned to an A and when switching from the C drone to the A drone I can play music in the key of A minor. C major and A minor share the same note steps. I have experienced with tuning the the A drone down to G and playing in some sort of G scale with the melody string. There is plenty of options and it its possible to tune some of the keys half a step up or down to fit other scales - but then things gets even more tricky. So I tend to stay in C major and A minor.
    This i NOT a VIKING instrument, but its ancient sound fits the bill in my opinion.

    Very nice! :)
    I'm lucky because my girlfriend is a cool hurdy gurdy player and we can play music together sometimes. I really love that instrument.
    Congratulations on building your own instrument, and also for your good music. Thanks for sharing!

    This is wonderful! It is perfect for your channel, and I really like that it's self-made music on your channel. I do occasionally recognize the same purchased jingles on one homesteading channel to another.

      Thank you:) When i started out I wanted to be completely self sufficiant with music. And I do like the hurdy gurdy for my intros etc. But I also found that for accompanying gentle shots of for example wild life or an early morning misty forest - my homemade music is too brute. Then I need to use some royalty free music.

    Jeg er totalt imponeret over at du bare kunne snitte dig selv en drejelire. Og så tilmed få den til at lyde godt. Drejeliren har altid fascineret mig, og din er bare lige i øjet. Stor tommel op herfra 😄👍👍👍

    Nice one! A helpful tip - less cotton. You should have a layer of cotton that is as thin as possible, while still covering the entire string across the wheel. Don't let it bunch up at all! You'll get better and better at it!

    • @RAMUNI-Viking
      @RAMUNI-Viking  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. And thank you for the tip. I Will definately try that. My issue has been that i have No long string cotton. Only Those make up plads and to make Them stick and stay on with No long fibres i needed a thick layer rolled up.

      @@RAMUNI-Viking Ahhh I understand! Not sure where you are located but look up "cellucotton 100% rayon" and see if you can get some delivered. 5 USD for a box that will last a lifetime. And make sure you apply rosin to the string before you apply the cotton, to help it stick a bit.
      Good luck, keep it up :)

    What open strings did you use for the drones and the melody? :)

    • @RAMUNI-Viking
      @RAMUNI-Viking  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello David. Hope this answer your question: I used strings from an octave violin. The melody string is the octave violin A string tuned down to G. The C drone is the octave violin D string tuned down to C. The A drone is the octave violin G string tuned up to an A.
Let me know if it makes sense:)

    Smadderfedt mand, falsterpiben er måske mere periodisk korrekt? Det er ikke kritik på instrumentet, det er mega imponerende - stryger instrumenter er svære at få god lyd ud af i min erfaring, og jeg kan ikke forestille mig "mekanik" gør det nemmere. Falsterpiben er dog et vikingeinstrument, og er ikke så svære at lave som man skulle tro. God vind herfra!

      Hej:) mange tak for dit feedback. Med Falster piben mener du da en sækkepibe bygget på den overlevede pibe eller blot piben selv? Ville gerne prøve at bygge en:)

      Begge! Jeg har eksperimenteret med selvstændige piber i ny og næ over et par år, og er nu ved at lave en sæk. Men rørblade er ikke så svære som man lige først skulle tro :) @@RAMUNI-Viking

      Det lyder spændende. Jeg skal helt sikkert prøve kræfter med at lave en på et tidspunkt. Mit instrument projekt for denne vinter bliver nok en hedeby rebec
