Hello! 🙂 I recently started using the Drunk Elephant A-Passioni. I use the recommended pea size amount once a week and will bump it up to twice a week, as the irritation doesn’t seem too bad (some flaking, mostly on the nose and a bit on lower cheeks). There was a tiny bit of stinging sensation but that didn’t last for more than several minutes.
Do you have a video on niacinamide or hydroxyethyl urea? I started using Good Molecules niacinamide serum at night, when it’s not a retinol night, and have been using vitamin C serum in the mornings. I wonder if it’s okay to use the Hado Labo Gokujyun Premium lotion in any part of my regimen, or if I need to swap it out with one of those ingredients.

Hi Michelle, have you done research on Retin A Micro (tretinoin microspheres)? I opted for this alcohol-free gel formulation (using for both acne and anti-aging) because I was always told that the isopropyl myristrate in the tretinoin cream clogs pores and causes breakouts. Retin A Micro is also known for causing far less irritation and it is a LOT more expensive. I have extremely sensitive skin and started this at 0.5% and went up to the 0.1% which I have now been on for about 3 years. I've never had irritation/dryness/peeling and now I apply about 2 pea-sized amounts nightly on moisturized skin and moisturize again about 15-20 minutes later. Nobody talks about this microspheres formulation of tretinoin. I asked my dermatologist if it has anti-aging properties as well as treating acne, and she says it does. Have you come across research about this microspheres formulation? Can you talk about it in a blog post or video?
PS. You can apply tretinoin on your broken capillaries and it does actually help it fade/heal. (My dermatologist told me to try it on a keloid surgical scar that was treated with steroid injection which had resulted in a much worse, larger area of broken capillaries. The tretinoin did work; it took about 6 months to a year, but at least I didn't have to do la$er treatment$$$.) Thank you, Julie

After watching countless videos, reading countless articles and seeing a dermatologist, I bought Tretinoin 0.05% cream online (it was almost 50% cheaper than pharmacy lol) and used a pea-size amount on the first night. The following day, no reaction, so I was feeling brave, and even if most people said use it once a week, then twice the second week, etc., I used it the second night again. Next day, no problem again. Used it again a third night. Following day, kept waiting for my face to "fall off" (accng to Caroline Hirons), but nothing.
I've been using Tretinoin since February, my blackheads have halved, my hyperpigmentation have greatly faded, and I haven't had any breakouts.
    What a fucking miracle ingredient.

What he didn't tell me was the before and after care. My skin was purging and flaked like the desert. I learnt how not to irritate my skin in baby steps, I use it every third night mixed with a moisturizer or pure Aloe vera gel. Now my skin loves it. I have been using it since November last year.

These are some really great tips, thank you! I just started adapalene 0.1% about a week ago, and so far I haven't experienced anything too bad. My skin has been purging but they're all really small comedones and pretty small whiteheads with only a few big blemishes which is how I can tell that it's not a normal breakout. I've been buffering the adapalene gel by putting a layer of The Inkey List's Ceramide Night Treatment on my skin first and then spreading the adapalene over it, waiting a minute, and then putting a thick layer of the Klair's Freshly Juiced Vitamin E mask. I find this combination has helped to prevent dryness and peeling in spite of my dry skin because I use a lot of humectants, plus products with ceramides and vitamin E.

I tried Retin A when I was younger, applied nightly, within a week or so I was so flakey and peeling that I threw the tube in the trash. A few years later I started using Alpha Skincare glycolic acid products, 12 and then 14%. These products really work well, they are formulated at the right PH for the actives to be effective. I think 10 years or so of using glycolic acid made it easy to transition to Tretinoin. I use 0.5% nightly with no irritation. I do apply a very thin layer of a light moisturizer first, though.

Thank you so much for your amazing content. I watch every single one of your videos and absolutely love the reliable science-based information they contain. Now this video I even watched twice as retinoid use is of special interest to me. My skin just won't tolerate tretinoin, so I went back to differin which I tolerate well. However, due to the receptor specificities, do you think that differin really has a significant antiaging effect comparable to tretinoin? Do you think that maybe a good retinol or retinaldehyde might be even better for antiaging than differin? I'd really appreciate your opinion on this!

Had just asked for a video on retinoids when you asked what we wanted to see and it came the next day! 😂
I was on “adapalene gel” for years for acne (fluctuated between every night and every third night depending on how my skin was. I never ever peeled or got irritated by it except I got possibly some broken capillaries that have stuck around near my undereyes but I can’t actually remember if I had it before or not, and I was on 0.1% only which isn’t crazy high),
NOW, I’m on day 12 of accutane to hopefully get rid of it for awhile! So far all is good except dry lips which is the #1 side effect. Still not super dry skin though everywhere else, fingers crossed!

This was very helpful, thank you! I currently use Differin, on week 6. I use a pea size amount mixed with la Roche Posay Cicaplast, on moisturized skin, half hour post moisturizer. I found this is excellent for me. I haven’t had any irritation at all. My first 3 weeks, I used only once a week. The following three, twice a week, just started three times a week with the same strategy. I still can’t seem to tolerate vitamin C though. I’ve never been able to. I do use niacinamide, panthenol, HA and other soothing ingredients though. I’ve had some mild purging come up about two days after a treatment that quickly heals and fades, and it’s not pustular, just little white heads. Eventually I’ll probably just mix the adapalene with my moisturizer or apply to bare skin, but I’ll work up to that! I’m going low and slow, in no rush.

Hey, I love your channel. You are my favorite youtuber ❤
I'm looking for no prescription retinoids for now. What do you think about retinaldehyde/retinAl? Is it better than retinOl? Is there a good evidence for efficacy of retinaldehyde? It's new ingredient, I think. I consider buying Medik8 retinAl or Avene retinAl.
And finally, which is the best non prescription retinoid?
    Greeting from Bulgaria ❤

Hey Michelle! I wanted to know if you know what to expect when transitioning from Adapalene to Tretinoin. I'm using galderma differin 0.1% and have been using it for the last year and a half. My skin is doing great, and I have almost no pimples (the occasional hormonal flare up, but nothing noticeable). I wanted to start retin-a but I don't know how to make the transition safely, like what kind of percentage I should start out with, how I'd transition, etc. Can you make a video about this? I am very curious to know.

Thanks Michelle! You must have known I just changed my curology formula to include 0.09% tret! Would it be helpful for me to use a retinoid like the Inkey List’s for a few weeks before switching over to the tret? Some people seem to think easing into a less harsh derivative before the tret is helpful

I’m on my 6th week of Differin and it’s been suspiciously easy! Nothing crazy, experienced a bit of dryness and a few zits that might as well be just due to my hormones 🤷🏻‍♀️ my face is smooth as a baby’s bum! Will definitely go to see my derm for tretinoin, thanks for the video!

I used differin for years without much success. I never noticed a difference using it. It didn’t help much with my acne and it didn’t make my skin peel or anything. I went to see a dermatologist and they prescribed me a stronger one and I saw a difference within the first week. Made my skin peel a lot at first but I’ve learned how and when to use it and it’s been a game changer with the smoothness and texture of my skin.

Hey Michelle, I’ve been using adapalene and stieva for a few years now, and recently recovered retin-A micro gel - supposedly can time release therefore less irritation? What do you think of it? I tried it last night and my skin feels much drier than usual (higher % than my stieva and I applied a bit too much probably) but zero peeling :O usually stieva makes me peel a lot worse even if less dry. but I’m just a little hesitant to completely switch to that because Valeant isn’t exactly known as the most ethical company and they are the only manufacturer of this formulation here in Canada...any advices appreciated! ❤️

Pls help... when I used differin my skin looked amazing. I did this for a year. I’ve just started Tretinoin but I don’t see the magic happening. Should I switch back to differin?
Also I use Bio oil gel after tretinoin and it works like a charm.

I just started my tret journey and am planing to take it slow.. can I use a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid before applying tret? As you said humectant made your skin more prone to irritation...is face oil a better choice? Does rose hip oil, castor oil etc works?

Thank you so much for this! I just started tretinoin a few days ago, following the instructions religiously, and then the peeling started. I'm not used to that since I have combination-oily skin. I'm definitely going to try the trick of applying oil first and basically do your week 2 routine since I don't think I'm so sensitive that I need to do short-contact. Again, thank you!!!!!!!!!

I’ve been using differen gel for about 4 years back when it was only available as a prescription. It has done wonders for my acne, but even now I have to be diligent about keeping my skin moisturized. Some extra dry days in winter, I won’t use it every day to avoid irritation and dryness. I also have to be diligent about sun protection.

Thank you 😃😃! I am on week 4, and I put it on every second day now, on towel dry skin, with moisturizer and an oil on top, and I have not experienced any dryness or flaking! It has gone so smoothly that I am wondering if the cream is not working properly 😅 I see other people just apply it on the skin, and don't use any moisturizers or oils on top..Have any of you used tretinoin and topped it with moisturizer and oil and seen an effect? I don't use it for acne, but acne scars, so it will take a loon time before I can see any results..

Thank you for this video! I have a question, I noticed in this and another video your routine is in cycles. I was always under the impression that consistency is key so I always tried to do the same routine every day. But apparently that was another myth (or something I just made up? haha). I've been using Differin during the day and 2.5% benzoyl peroxide at night, my skin can sometimes feel red and irritated yet I still get some breakouts. I wonder if switching up my routine as you do might work better and adding a chemical exfoliant on non Differin days.
If you ever have time, I'd be really interested in a video about consistency vs. cycling products. Which products are best used intermittently vs those that are most effective daily etc. Thank you!

My dermatologist gave me the .025% tretinoin after using the ordinary granactive retinoid and so far so good just diluting it with my CeraVe lotion heavily every night to stick as close to what I was doing before as possible. Once my skin stops lightly purging I'm going to start going with the undiluted tretinoin cream 2-3 times a week as advised then up to every day as recommended for my issues and concentration prescribed. My skin is very sensitive and finicky so this is quite promising as my skin seems to really like the retinoid any way it comes so far, as long as it's fragrance free.

I used 0.025 Tretinoin for a year, every 2/3 days on top of moisturizer and diluted with moisturizer and while the purging stage passed the irritation never went away. My pores got more enlarged and certain areas of my face were constantly red. Unfortunately my cheeks have the texture of orange peel now.
I think tretinoin is too harsh for sensitive skin and in my case did more harm than good, even though I did everything to minimize irritation. I've seen on internet forums that there are quite many others who had a similar experience.

I’m going to be increasing my tret script from .7 to 1.4. I have microcomedones (or maybe milia?) under the skin on my cheeks. I’ve been on .7 for a year and am a little nervous to increase the tret. I appreciate you mentioning the hydrating toners/essences. I just started using I’m From rice toner and couldn’t figure out why my face is so dry lately even when using my .7 tretinoin! When I receive the new strength I will know to leave out the toner for now.

Ive used 4 bottles of The Ordinarys Granactive Retinoid Emulsion, didnt notice anything from using it. So eventually i thought, screw it, and went straight for Paulas Choice 1% Retinol treatment. Woo boy, i notice it now xD But its manageable. At night i cleanse, follow up with Paulas Choice enriched calming toner (this makes SUCH a difference, flakyness disapears when putting this on, its amazing for dry skin). Then i use a rich moisturizer with a few drops of Paulas Choice Niacinamide booster. I let that sink in and then i use the retinol treatment. I use it every other day for 3 weeks now and so far so good. Havent dared start acids again, ill give that a go next week.

I recently started using the granactive retinoid 2% emulsion by the ordinary. In their list of retinoids, that particular one was one of the least irritating formulas, while having moderate strength. Nothing much has happened yet, I use it 2-3 times a week, my skin feels less oily in the morning, but my blackheads haven't disappeared yet. Are retinoids even comparable to retin-a and tretinoin in terms of all the benefits you mentioned in the video? I thought I was being smart starting on something with low irritation risk, but now I'm wondering if I'll even see any meaningful results because it's not "real" retinol.
