As a native to WB I can only say, our CM has chosen a path of politics that's beyond understandable. When India is progressing, WB doesn't even fit into top 10 states. What she has been doing after coming to power: going for namaz regularly, providing shelter to rohingas, giving tickets to illiterate, corrupted ones(read Partha Chatterjee), giving freehand for cut money, running syndicates all over the state. These are the few achievements of our Honourable Chief Minister of WB.

I am a bengali from kolkata and I completly agree wit the fact that bengal is getting worse . People only talk about politics instead of talking about business and education . No productive ecosystem and moreover much of the youth is leaving WB just becausw of this problem.

Yeah. Bengal under Congress was one of the most prosperous though. Now it is getting worse. It is below Indian average. The Gangetic Valley is the poorest in India. Bengal, UP, Bihar have to pool in resources.
I am a Bengali currently staying in Odisha. My native place is a remote village in the Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal. There was a very poor man in my village who used to buy cow dung cakes from my maternal grandma and sold them in the market for many years. He was so poor that he was barely able to afford proper food. But after joining TMC as a party worker and spending many years, over the years he has accumulated so much money through corruption that he moved from our village and now has a bungalow worth 5-6 crores INR and multiple cars. He is also a very powerful TMC political leader now in our area.
I know many Bengalis are still indulged in the nostalgia of our rich and glorious history and famous people, but the reality is nostalgia will not let us lead anywhere. All the potential that Kolkata had was not properly tapped and there is nothing substantial in Kolkata and West Bengal to be proud of today.
Kolkata's location is one of the most unique locations in Asia, situated right at the confluence of South and South East Asia, comparable to the likes of Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai. A Kolkata-Haldia Metropolitan Region of the likes of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou Pearl River Delta Metropolitan Region could have been a gamechanger for India's development and economy and making West Bengal one of the richest states of India, but sadly years of Communist Rule with no vision and now TMCs with freebies has completely destroyed any potential of Kolkata and West Bengal.
And the saddest thing is my own paternal aunt who is a nurse by profession, is a TMC bootlicker herself, always posting WhatsApp status of how great and amazing Didi is and her Party.
Bro, Kolata is NOWHERE near South-East Asia. Myanmar is the nearest South-East Asian nation and Bangladesh and NE India are closer to it than West Bengal and Kolkata.

As a Bengali I can assure you the only reason she's in power is that people from urban areas that have a brain of their own are out-voted by the rural masses that she's bought with her welfare schemes. The corruption within TMC is absolutely insane but the majority of the voter bank (rural people) do not care as long as they think the government keeps them well-fed and happy. It felt helpless being a Bengali residing in West Bengal & I'm glad I found employment elsewhere.

Well Mohak, you missed this important point about West Bengal: A large, significant percentage of Muslims firmly support Mamata Banerjee. Muslims are about 28% in West Bengal, and a vast majority of them vote TMC. This gives a massive propulsion to the TMC, because it’s a secure vote bank which isn’t going anywhere. Bengali Muslims have realized that defeating the BJP requires supporting a single party, which in WB happens to be the TMC. They realized that though the Congress+ Left Front team will also want Muslim votes, it makes no sense voting for them because they anyways have no chance of victory. Many Muslims don’t specifically like TMC but they just dont see any other viable alternative. TMC and Muslims have this mutual understanding of each other where one ensures the victory/safety of the other.

Being from Kolkata, I can tell you the situation is much worse. The things Mohak bhai says are all true. The main thing is that we, the people of Bengal, are very much into politics; it's like a religion to us. Most importantly, 80% of the people of Bengal do not even care about economic growth, industrial progress, or IT sectors. We are happy with our "culture". ✌

Being a Bengali I feel Bengalis are very nostalgic who only like to glorify their rich past in pre independent era in a lazy afternoon.
One of my relative is so rich (at one point making a medical College even crossed their mind) that she was well convinced about getting her son a suitable govt job by bribing.
Even some of my parents colleagues very proudly boasted for securing govt jobs for each of their family members (by bribing ofcourse) . They all lost their jobs due to recent ed and highcourt involvement in teacher recruitment scam.
One of my uncle's colleague who sold his entire property to get the bribing money, as he came from a very needy background, now lost his job, also facing difficulty for collecting the recompensation money (each whose names were published by high court needed to give their entire salary till date to the eligible candidates whose seats were taken illegally by them).
The condition is so bad. Each of my engineering friends including my only brother now resides outside bengal, either Pune or Bangalore. If you are engineer you can't simply get a job here, as simple as that.
It's very sad to see that once a rich culture now losing their all glory but still failed to notice so.
Bengal is having big Hegemony & Clannish mentality of BBK - Bhrahmin, Baidya, Kayastha with Kulins, they are in senior & middle level of all State govt. Jobs & Legislation, Judiciary, Media, Corporates, Business and Traders, Merchants associations & all Religious Trusts.....

14)Infrastructure is completely revolutionised.

As a person from Bengal and a serious Upsc aspirant I would like to highlight 6 points why today Bengal is in downturn despite natural beauty from mountain to sea, culture heritage and literature...
[1] Identity of Bengal is Only kolkata for people living in Kolkata and who are from outside because that's how it has been shown. ..Kolkata..Which is essentially a primate city in recent times nothing left there except heritage of Britishers,some cultural footprints and intemperate egoistic attitude of being a Bengal. Other districts or towns were not developed . For people living in kolkata, west Bengal means only kolkata and few anonymous Zilla... that's how City media there portrays it whereas in Other big States it's not the case along with capital city few other Cities, big towns are properly developed from where revenue comes which can be spent on development of rural/backward areas.
[2] Not developing small towns,medium towns, District headquarters to be called as bigger town or city in it's truest sense, basic amenities, proper transportation is also absent in most of the places.
[3] Administration is totally Kolkata centric you will hardly find any ministers in department or who are pivotal positions from other parts of WB excepts tribal affairs or similar role, so people from there feel highly deprived.
[4] 'Babus' of Kolkata or bourgeois bestride the language,food habits, accent, culture as a whole..... labelling them all as either 'hilly people' Or 'adivasis' and make fun of them.
[5] To much politics in every sphere...and we know politics, muscle power, violence go hand in hand it affects the growth always tension between higher authority to lower authority, center to state which acts as an impediment to the social and economic growth.

The ultimate issue of politics is about ethics. During the Bengal Elections, the only opposition to TMC was BJP. BJP had no local presence in Bengal. Despite support from Marwari, Khatri, Sikh, Jain and other communities, BJP had an identity and security problem to solve, which it didn't. Narendra Modi cannot be a face in a State Election, especially in the case of Bengal. There were no faces or proponents of a cabinet in Bengal elections.
On similar note, there was no security of political workers in Bengal. During the elections, I witnessed a murder, political clash, tear gas, and a bomb search squad operation personally. It's almost Kashmir.
Now, TMC brings forth it's strongest weapons- Bangladeshi Hindu Votebank, which is literally funded by Mayors of wards in the outskirts of Kolkata; and perhaps the biggest organised corruption circuit. I know poeole who scammed 600 crores and live in dual complex among expensive societies. Bengal is the most corrupt state in India. Every member of the party is corrupt. The right hand of right hand of Mamata Banerjee, not even a MLA owns more than few MLAs and fewer CMs.

It is not just state govt schemes. My father worked in a Central govt bank and had to be saved by police in the first few days of joining the branch (I am from Karnataka, my name sounds Bengali) because he told the customer he did not have to pay 5% of home loan as ghoos to him and the local Left leader who was acting as an "agent". Dad had never heard of such a thing and when he asked other staff, they told him that you take half of the 5%, keep 10-20k and give the leader the rest from your end. The Left leader brings you more clients.
My school was shut down at least 3 times a month due to a nearby factory experiencing labour protests.
So many other stories my parents still murmur about(I was 6) to this day.

There is one more problem that is language barrier in other states which have native languages there people learn english in order to connect with everyone like South India there auto walas also speak English but in bengal many people study in bengali medium schools where they only learn bengali and it becomes very hard for them to connect with everyone and slowly they start to think that people are enforcing thier language on them and they feel very offensive. One day nearby to my house there was speech going on and in that speech leader was saying that they want to make bengal hindi speaking land that is thier intention, bengalis love thier culture and language a lot and until they don't feel connected or they are satisfied you are respecting and appreciating it,they will not accept anyone. I am born and brought up in kolkata and I know bengali and even being a non - bengali I love bengali culture and especially food. ❤

Because once they gain foothold and establish their system it's very difficult to get rid of them, not for forget the extremely violent politics here, gang-rape, murder, extortions are a common occuring during every election cycle.
Being residing in Kolkata and running small scale businesses I can say that the situation is much worse. We are just treated as atm machines in the name of rules and regulations, may it be traffic rules, or chanda during any occasions, or running a legal business ethically.

My father is a die hard tmc supporter and absolutely dispises bjp. So when i was young i too got fed into that narrative and considered tmc to be the best for bengal and any other party as bad (tho cpm is way worse than tmc for bengal ). But after growing a few brain cells of my own and seeing how Mamta Banerjee has just been giving away freebies , not focusing on industrial growth and IT growth to create jobs, and most importantly letting in thousands of illegal bangladeshi 's every year to garner votes , i have completely given up hope on west Bengal's growth. West Bengal has some of the most literate people in india , yet thousands of people have to go out to other states to look for jobs every year instead of having an opportunity ti do something here. Hope this can change soon.
I'm a resident of Bengal and things I have seen and experienced till now has become so regular and common that we are now quite indifferent and casual about these things.
In deep down we are completely exhausted and have accepted our unchangeable destiny.

As a Bengali, I totally agree with you. The people are so politically brainwashed. And it will go on loop whether Bjp or any other new party will come in power. Because people love to be in this system. We are the main reason why our state, once it was the powerhouse of India, is now in loadshedding. Some goods are happening but it is so negligible. Unemployed young youths are busy with alcohol, syndicate and promoting systems. Once the left member is now the block president of TMC, I am 100% sure that man will switch himself to the next ruling party if Tmc will lose in the near future. And this trend will go on. And it is the saddest thing for our state.
