He was a bear then a cat then a dog then a cat again. Also, if the Pete from Oswald is included, then it would probably be from bear to mile to cat to dog to cat. (I always thought the Pete in Oswald cartoons looked like a mole.) Also, Universal’s version of Pete even transitioned him into a rabbit one time.
The goof troop version of Pete would be my favorite as I grew up watching and loving that show and that was my first introduction to him. Of course I have a soft spot for the big guy in Kingdom hearts as well. I actually never knew he was supposed to be a cat in the modern cartoons, thanks to goof troop I always thought he was another dog.
I would argue that Pete's first 3D rendering would have been in Kingdom Hearts II, which was either 1 or 2 years before Mickey Mouse Club House...although his first 3D rendering is actually his in-game model.
I love that this character has lived on for so long! It's sad that some amazing front runner characters have had so much happen to them that left them hidden for so long, such as Oswald, Horace, Clarabelle and so on. And it is great that they have been coming back, slowly but surely. Then you have Pete, the single oldest Disney character ever, who just barely survived the whole Universal-Walt Disney fight in the 20's and has remained a prominent character through a whole 100 years! Congratulations Pete! We love our constantly changing yet ever mischievous "bear-cat-dog" guy!
In your opinion. In mine, one of the few best versions. Other best versions are the House of Mouse Pete and the Three Musketeers Pete. All voiced by Jim Cummings. ^.^
I loved Pete in the Donald Duck cartoons. He has the perfect combination of competent and menacing but not completely evil. He plays more of an authority figure to Donald and they have such a great dynamic.
This was fantastic, thank you so much for making this video. Pete is my favorite Disney character and he doesn't get enough love or merchandise. I think my favorite appearance is from the Three Musketeers.

It's really disappointing that the Kingdom Hearts games really fail to utilize the Disney characters very well. Donald and Goofy get good use, sure, but most of the other characters like Pete end up being shafted before anything interesting can happen with them. I think KH2 did a good job with introducing Pete, and he had interesting confrontations at Yen Sid's tower, The Underworld, and most importantly Timeless River. But then after that, it just seems like they didn't have anything interesting for him to do, which carries over to KH3 as well. He's printed as an important villain in these games, but really all he has is a tiny bit of screen time. The only other memorable thing he did in these games is try to get an award by lazily helping townsfolk in a selfish way, which ended up resulting him being thrown in a secluded void to reflect on his actions. After that, he's just there, not even offering a whole ton for his appearances. It's not so surprising that KH wasn't included in these videos to begin with, with the way they tend to be treated as characters if they're not Goofy or Donald.
Black Pete, or Svarte Petter as he is called in Swedish. Indeed the black sheep of Disney characters. Even though the facts he is a cat. :-3 Interesting that he is so much older than both Mickey and Oswald. And... used to be a bear! Look more like a seal sometimes though in those Alice shorts. :-P
@@Swerving7344, en svensk fundering i så fall! :D Har Svarte Petter haft något annat svenskt namn tidigare, apropå hur många Engelska namn han har haft innan. :o Träbente petter? xD
Ohhhh, so Pete's family's names in Goof Troop were references to his old character designs? Peg for his peg leg and Pistol for Pistol Pete. That's really cool! And I always thought Pistol was an amazing name.
At one point in ancient history, he was called Ratón Miguelito, Minnie was Mimí, Donald was Pato Pascual and Goofy was Tribilín. These names were dropped in the 80s in favor of the original ones and by now are mostly forgotten. If you think those are wierd, you should hear the Looney Tunes ones, most are still used officially today.
It feels so strange that Pete wasn't used as often as I thought he was. Being a mid 90s baby, I saw him more often than not in most Disney shows/movies and just assumed he was the Bowser to Mickey's Mario. Also never noticed just how often his legs underwent multiple removal and reattachment surgeries. Probably because I only saw his peg leg in the Musketeer movie and thought that was just one of the few villain aesthetics he wore specifically for that role.
Pete has always been one of my favorite Disney characters I did like him in kingdom hearts since he was an antagonist but there were parts where the villains wanted to do something horrible and you could see that he was bad but not evil.
Personally when watching Goof Troop...I watched it for Pete and his family. He made me laugh wayyy too hard! " Ya miserable little Goof!" Jim Cummings deserves a metal!
Pete is such an interesting character in the comics, particularly in the Italian stories! He was developed as an antagonist to Mickey, in a similar fashion to the cartoons, but he usually contends for the position of main antagonist with Phantom Blot. Personally, I think their collaborations often tend to be brilliant
So, it did not start with a mouse, IT STARTED WITH A BIG CAT AND A LITTLE GIRL! I have known this for a loooooong time. Don't let Disney's slogan "It all started with a mouse" fool you anymore in the age where we have so much information at our fingertips almost literally. Trust me, I used to be a Mickey Mouse fan, and still like him a bit, but the sad truth is that he is not the first character.
I think all Walt meant by that is that the cornerstone of the success of the Disney studio rests on the shoulders of Mickey Mouse. The Oswalds and the Alices were never popular cartoons, they were disposable shorts shown at the beginning of b-movies, and forgotten. If it weren't for Mickey Mouse - whose cartoons were a cultural phenomenon, Disney wouldn't be what they are today. In fact, if not for Mickey, it's pretty likely all the early Alices and Oswalds wouldn't exist any more.
@@DaveLeeDownUnder I can see the logic there, so thank you for your insight. I have seen a 1923 Alice short (yes, from before Pete's first appearance), and this was branded as a "Laugh-O-Gram." I have also watched a 1922 pre-Alice, pre-Disney Company, "Laugh-O-Gram" of Cinderella. These were just some extra features from the Alice in Wonderland DVD and the Cinderella DVD, respectively. I guess some people at the company had to digitally restore the original films before they were disposed, but it is quite interesting to see how Disney's animation evolved from the "Laugh-O-Grams," to Alice comedies from when the Disney Company was founded, to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, and finally to Steamboat Willie and Mickey Mouse.
Yeah. For a long time I used to think that Mickey Mouse was Disney’s oldest character and that he was around since 1921 before I saw his evolution video and this one. This made me learn Pete is the oldest character and Mickey was around since 1928.
Pete is definitely the black sheep of Disney characters for sure. I'm surprised that he is the oldest cartoon character in existence. I love how Pete is a friendly archenemy seeing him become the bane to Mickey's existence.
Pete has also appeared in Mickey's Mania for the Sega Genesis, usually in different incarnations and various levels of villany, from the Steamboat Willie as a minor obstacle to being the actual final boss reprising his role in the prince and the pauper level.
The Oswald incarnation of Pete almost kinda looks a little like Mortimer Mouse to me. Loved the video. It was interesting finding out that Pete first had a role as a neighbor about 40 years before Goof Troop. BTW, would you do an evolution of Mortimer Mouse sometime? I'd be really interested in the history of that character.
I think Pete's design was intentionally designed to be misleading; but it definitely has cat features, despite this he still conserve some of his original canine/boar-like aspects.
In the Oswald cartoons, I thought he was a mole. Also, his exact species there is not specified in the documentary, so I guess we will never know for sure.
The Oswald version of Pete was effectively the common ancestor of both later Pete AND Sylvester, his pal and sometimes boss. Don't think about it too long, your head might hurt! (-:
Pete was always my favorite disney character, next to goofy. I think Pete's best appearance was in a Goofy movie :) this was a great video of him, ty so much!
One thing that kinda bothered me is how you didn’t mention his face color. I’ve noticed Duck Tales, Epic Mickey, Get a Horse, and Current cartoon design have his white face while everything else have his tan face. Other than that it’s a great video!
I know the Pete in Runaway Brain is not really Pete, but the design change on Pete in that short is very important and influenced the Mickey Mouse works and other appearances.
I love cartoons. Seeing these old animations reminds me why. You can do a lot of things with your life, but to animate and/or voice a character, that lives on forever. #inspiration

Part Bear, Part Cat, Part Dog... Pete is a honey badger! LOL
Pete is the most interesting character out there today. I wish they’d use him more often
Agreed.
Wish they did.
Possibly a solo cartoon?
Also at 10:49 Pete's nose changes colors and then goes back..
So Pete was a bear, then a cat, then a dog, and back to cat?
Pete was supposed to represent a cat
He was a bear then a cat then a dog then a cat again. Also, if the Pete from Oswald is included, then it would probably be from bear to mile to cat to dog to cat. (I always thought the Pete in Oswald cartoons looked like a mole.) Also, Universal’s version of Pete even transitioned him into a rabbit one time.
From 1928 onwards, he has been consistently a cat
The goof troop version of Pete would be my favorite as I grew up watching and loving that show and that was my first introduction to him. Of course I have a soft spot for the big guy in Kingdom hearts as well. I actually never knew he was supposed to be a cat in the modern cartoons, thanks to goof troop I always thought he was another dog.
Pete is definitely one of my favorite “villains” Disney has ever made.
In 1932 we finally got Pete's first words:
8:12 Rughrughrurugetbiitch!
He said, "Wanna get bit?"
I thought his first words were Gimme That Puzzle!
"kingdom HEARTS games "
you gave in didn't you
We all did
I would argue that Pete's first 3D rendering would have been in Kingdom Hearts II, which was either 1 or 2 years before Mickey Mouse Club House...although his first 3D rendering is actually his in-game model.
Janae Fuller That’s what I was going to say ;).
You can hear his anger in finally having to give in when he says "kingdom hearts" lmao
* shakes fist *
In one episode of goof troop, Pete's wife calls him a Tasmanian devil.
Probably a note towards the V.A.
Oof
In Germany Pete is called ,,Kater Karlo'' (Karlo Cat) And I also didn't know that he is Disneys oldest Character
in My opinion he doesn't look like a cat
In Dutch it's "Boris Boef".
@@jurgen_haan That's an even funnier Name :D
In Brazil he's called "Bafo de Onça" (Jaguar breath). But in A Goofie Movie people call him "João" (equivalent to "John" in english)
In latin america he is called called 'Pedro'.
If Jim Cummings's voice is coming out of Pete's vocal chords, then that's my Pete.
So basically, Goof Troop/House of Mouse/Kingdom Hearts
I love that this character has lived on for so long!
It's sad that some amazing front runner characters have had so much happen to them that left them hidden for so long, such as Oswald, Horace, Clarabelle and so on. And it is great that they have been coming back, slowly but surely.
Then you have Pete, the single oldest Disney character ever, who just barely survived the whole Universal-Walt Disney fight in the 20's and has remained a prominent character through a whole 100 years!
Congratulations Pete! We love our constantly changing yet ever mischievous "bear-cat-dog" guy!
Goofy movie Pete was best version of pete
Yes
In your opinion. In mine, one of the few best versions.
Other best versions are the House of Mouse Pete and the Three Musketeers Pete. All voiced by Jim Cummings. ^.^
The Prince and The Pauper Pete was a vicious SOB.
Did you know that Pete has a sister named Penelope? She was made exclusively for a Disney chess board.
And did you know Pete also has a dog named Butch? Not much is really known about Butch as he is an obscure character. I think that “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse” featured the most Butch appearances.
Blank Blankness Butch is Pete’s dog??? I knew he was Pluto’s arch nemesis, but I didn’t know Pete was his owner!!!
@@powerpup97 He & Peg (and children PJ & Pistol) also had a pet dog (another Goofy & Pluto situation) named Chainsaw in _Goof Troop_ (meant to be opposite Goofy & Max's pet cat Waffles).
I had never really been a fan of Pete but when I saw him as a villain in Kingdom Hearts I was surprisingly able to enjoy him as a character
Goof troop and the Goofy movie were my favorite ones as a child.
Pete Parker in
Protagonist-man:
Into the Mickeyverse.
(in gruff voice) Okay... let's do this one more time.
A bear bitten by a radioactive cat.
He was never a bunny.
King Dedede Oh, well I guess that would be one of the alternate universe Petes.
King Dedede I know, right? It’s gonna be epic. Remember Disney Infinity War? “Mr. Duck...I don’t feel so good...” Quality cinema right there.
Fun fact: pre-Mickey Pete was reincarnated as a Crooked lawyer named Sylvester shyster in the early 1930s Mickey comic strips by Floyd gottfreson
what? they're not the same character
This was very entertaining and informative, and extremely well done :) Pete is one of my favorite Disney characters, and I am excited to see what they do with the character from here on out. I love how he is such a diverse and flexible "villain", able to fill the role of different personas while still being convincing and lovable. He truly is one of a kind :) Thank you for the awesome video!
Thank *you* ! 😊
Pete secretly has always had the peg leg he just puts it in a boot occasionally
He's gonna be 100 next year...I'll be impressed if Disney celebrates his Anniversary.
Oh wow!!! Thank you so much!! I've been waiting for Pete's video and you definitely did not disappoint. This video was interesting, entertaining, and amazing just as all your other ones are. Thanks again Dave Lee for your hard work and awesome content. You have made me into quite the fan of yours.
Thanks so much, I appreciate that!
In Norway his name is "Svarte Petter" which mins "Black Peter/Black Pete"
Even thou his dog like apperance in Goof troop, his german name has never changed.
Kater (german word for an male cat) Karlo
2:56Evidence that older=scarier
It's my favourite character. A stereotipical brute with lousy laugh but yet not a complete idiot.
Definitely check out the manga. It fleshes out a lot of characters who sort of got shafted by the game itself, like Pete and Kairi.
Jim Cummings is the best Pete.
Generally, Jim Cummings is the best everything. Especially Darth Vader.
DBulldog Agreed.
C U M M I N G S
Black Pete, or Svarte Petter as he is called in Swedish. Indeed the black sheep of Disney characters. Even though the facts he is a cat. :-3
Interesting that he is so much older than both Mickey and Oswald. And... used to be a bear! Look more like a seal sometimes though in those Alice shorts. :-P
Gysan i heard swedish
@@Swerving7344, Mhmm, I'm Swedish. :)
Gysan so am i
@@Swerving7344, en svensk fundering i så fall! :D
Yes Pete without a doubt is the most recognised Disney Villian Character.
Ohhhh, so Pete's family's names in Goof Troop were references to his old character designs? Peg for his peg leg and Pistol for Pistol Pete. That's really cool! And I always thought Pistol was an amazing name.
11:12 *That's enough disney for today...*
😂😂
Can't unsee it
Donald stop! You're uh hurting him.
Da nife is bigg
Donaldo is never afraid
YESSS Pete in the goofy movie is the best and thank you for choosing that iconically-lit pool scene. Mh. Beautiful.
In Latin America Pete is known as Pedro 😂😂
What do you think peter is in spanish
Do you guys call Mickey 'Miguel Mouse' as well?
At one point in ancient history, he was called Ratón Miguelito, Minnie was Mimí, Donald was Pato Pascual and Goofy was Tribilín. These names were dropped in the 80s in favor of the original ones and by now are mostly forgotten. If you think those are wierd, you should hear the Looney Tunes ones, most are still used officially today.
In Latin America pete is a blowjob.
Care to elaborate? In which country people call a blowjob a Pete or a Pedro? No one does it in Mexico, but in America a peter is also a d*ck.
Definitely three musketeers Pete. That was the best movie
I was looking forward to this video. It's hard to believe that there's a Disney character older than Mickey. Great work!
My favourite Pete line - "The Goof, he's a jinx I'll tell ya, a jinx!" 🤣
Pete is such an interesting character in the comics, particularly in the Italian stories! He was developed as an antagonist to Mickey, in a similar fashion to the cartoons, but he usually contends for the position of main antagonist with Phantom Blot. Personally, I think their collaborations often tend to be brilliant
I'm actually surprised you added kingdom hearts or other video games, as you didn't before in previous ones.
CHA0SBLEEDS it seems like people kept bugging him about it.
Das a bear.
Please do an updated version of this video to celebrate his 100th anniversary!
omg pete just bonked the frick out of that child 3:30
My favorite will always be Mickey's Christmas Carol. Ghost of Christmas to come/ future. "Why yours Ebeneezer, the richest man in the cemetery!"
In here Finland, we have always known Pete as Black Pete (translated as Musta Pekka).
How does this not get more views?
Make pete a meme
Search BOOM DA BOOM from House of mouse.

I remember that! I used to laugh and laugh when Mickey's response was, "Gram Gram used to sing THAT?" XD
he's Disney's Moto Moto
Oh my god. Pete's actually a cat?! I always assumed he was a wolf.
I think Pete's design was intentionally designed to be misleading; but it definitely has cat features, despite this he still conserve some of his original canine/boar-like aspects.
i thought he was a fucking dog!
He doesn't look like any real animal, honestly.
In the Oswald cartoons, I thought he was a mole. Also, his exact species there is not specified in the documentary, so I guess we will never know for sure.
@@maymay5600 no swears allowed!
Huh, with that tall hat, floppy ears and long snout, 1930s Oswald Pete looks a lot like Sylvester Shyster, another villain to Mickey.
The Oswald version of Pete was effectively the common ancestor of both later Pete AND Sylvester, his pal and sometimes boss. Don't think about it too long, your head might hurt! (-:
17:19 Kingdom HEARTS games. Thank you, we are appreciative.
I have a Disney Pete fanart to share: Check out @SutherlandKade’s Tweet: twitter.com/SutherlandKade/status/1109246329128173568?s=09
& it's really good
Pete was always my favorite disney character, next to goofy.
He's covered that so many times in all the other videos, I didn't even notice.
Plus sometimes Pete has brown fur and in KH3, Pete has curved ears that look more Jackal-like.
Why do Disney animals have hairless faces anyway? The only real animal I can think of that looks like that are hedgehogs.
thisismysea it is a style choice tho. It helps for their face to stand out so we can read their facial expression.
"in 2006 series Mickey Mouse Club House, Pete would appear in CGI animation for the very first time"
Kingdom Hearts 2 - "Am I a joke to you?"
kingdom hearts is a joke to everyone
Exactly! The one thing I have to say is this: *Blowing a raspberry*
The gods have answered our prayers.
Pete was Goofy's neighbour in Goof Troop and their sons were best friends. He took advantage of Donald Duck in The New Neighbor.
Thank you Dave Lee Down Under, Very cool!!!
I wonder if Disney will celebrate Pete’s 100th birthday since next year he will be one hundred years old and is the only character to be used by universal and Disney at the same time but i will definitely celebrate Pete’s birthday next year
I remember watching very old Disney cartoons on a VHS tape as a kid , I believe it was Mickey's Crazy Careers and has Pete as the " villian" in several of them and he was always kind of portrayed as a bully type sheriff or construction foreman chomping on his cigar and throwing his weight around. He was hilarious, he was also based on a stereotype of a type of person that most certainly does exist. I have worked for years in Forestry and Construction industries and have met many tough guy, cigar chomping sorts and always start giving them the nickname "Pete" and it always sticks.
Anyways....a great a.memorable character. This was an awsome video.
