    Hello to you and your wife. My wife and I are also planning on building a house and plann on going home to palawan for a site visit. Hopefully we will be luck you guys! lol. We appreciate the share of your house build and good job on the video! Hopefully, we can share some correspondence for advice/opinion. using 4 inch block ffor your wall was not safe enough for Typhoon or Earth quakeing a small foundtion could run into devastating irrepairable trouble.
    when you put your roof on make sure you tie each timber to the wall plat with tico straps every one then your roof will not fly away it is most important also in earth quakes and Typhoon winds, the footing should be at least 18 inches deep x 16 inches cement wide on the bottom to anchor your walls in high winds.
    you should use a building code of either American coastal areas to have a safe haven

      Infact the corner colume should be tie in to the wall with rebars and concrete later. The wall act as a support for the 2 adjacent walls. As it should the depth of the corner colume is important for good structural reason. Based on the many youtube videos on residential construction in the PH, I never see the wall was build with 8"X8"X16 hollow block, like in the US. I am sure PH has it own building codes. If not I will use US code book as a reference.

      Hi Tito, Actually the house is surprisingly strong, its survived a few strong earthquakes with no damage at all, all it currently needs is a coat of paint. Roof is tied down with rebar in numerous places, its the Philippines so things are done different to US, but you can do what ever you want when you build its completely up to you. 😊

      Oh and we dont get Typhoons where we are 😉👍

    • @ermingles1

      In the US house designs consider hurricanes while in the Philippines it is not as strong Gust of wind as the US. Otherwise designs become too conservative. Many houses in the Philippines are made of light materials and they survived annual typhoons. Whenever a major typhoon comes such as the yolanda, it would take some weeks to a couple of months to recover. The Philippines is always visited by arpund 20 typhoons a year and so far, they have been resilient and survived with simple house designs. For sure good house designs would provide better protection of your family and property.

      @filipinonurseretireshome4864 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have lived in USA for 40 years, I have seen how they built the houses in the neighborhood. If hurricane hits, I will say they will all be wiped out except for the flooring that are cemented. The hollow blocks in PI are flimsy but during the building process, they reinforced them with rebars and fill the walls with concrete and render them with 2inches on both sides which make it to an 8 inches wall. I rather have this than what we have in USA ( most of the walls are osb boards and vinyl sidings). Well, I know this time you prefer the bamboo roof, however, down the road you might prefer a prefab roofing due to its low maintenance and durability. You build as you go and build what suits your budget and imagination. Good luck, be safe!!!

    First thing i did before putting up our house is i spend time going around places scouting for a good and nice house ( not just one but many houses) then i tried to talk to the owner for the possible information of the architect who does the things, that way at least i have the idea.

Know that is not right, that is when we knew we had to be there make sure no miss use of materials and time, married to a very tight wife and she want be take advantage of. Phil & Cynthia

      Phil White so how much did you finally end up paying for the survey? Someone tried to tell my wife 30k peso then another 15k peso but to me from my limited research in Davao del sur should be mun 1.5k to max 6k. Thoughts?

    Love it. Thanks. Anyway we can hey a cost break down for all in build of house. Then how much for the land? Would appreciate it. Also any concerns for termites since your roof seems to be of a lot of wood vice iron metal? Thanks so much.

    • @dvcheers4790
      @dvcheers4790 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi it's great that you still found good lumbers in your area(somehow ph government limits the usage of timber, environment concerns) and if that lumber is really kinda hard type (which oftenly expensive in urban areas) then termites are not an issue anymore like the truss in our old house, even hammering nail is not easy. And perhaps their just up at your ceiling and truss parts, as far as I know termites usually occurs whenever your timber is connected directly from your soil or land, their prone from it.

    I see 4" hollow block in trench. I hope you put in a level footing? The footing should be twice width of 4" wall, or 8 inches. You could get away from leveling, if you built a crawl space. With the crawl, you start at highest point, at 18" above ground, and build foundation from there. No leveling of land, except foundation trench. If your house was let say 24", you could build a center trench and foundation or piers. Also, if you have local Phil labor and foreman, they may not know how to put in Crawl. But, China can come to rescue: Foam panel walls can be bought for $3,000, with $2,000 for customs and delivery to your sight. I have seen on youtube that you can not only use these 2 ft x 7 ft interlocking tongue and groove panels for walls, but also for crawl space floors. Just have metal beams from center foundation to side walls, every 3.5 feet. Then, you have an easy crawl space, and a floor space to put up the cement foam walls. I have also seen using these cement foam panels for the roof, too. Of course, a HIP roof is best for typhoons. I suggest 100 mm thick.
    Also, from China, you can buy and ship to Cebu or any place with a large port, insulated metal roof panels. The panels just slip on your roof and into the groove, and screwed in with outdoor screws with rubber insulated metal washers. You can order any thickness metal and any thickness foam. I suggest 0.6 mm metal, and at least 50 mm thick foam.

    • @LifesJourneyNZPhilippines
      @LifesJourneyNZPhilippines  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Dobie, Our bathroom's probably abit too large but we like it (we get a lot of comments on how large it is haha), Tiles keep it cool, the porch designs are my inlaws idea which give the porch some character. Our builder has built and renovated a few more houses in our village but still insists he likes our best, which makes all the hard work seem worth it.

      Life's Journey Philippines Where were you located at ? Have you replaced the roof yet? How is it holding up from leaks so far? I think it was built 2012? and fiber lasts 3-5 years? Have you considered the ?? not sure what its made of, fake type tile looking roofing, but comes in a lot of different colors, prob a light colored will reflect more heat; I've seen them terra cotta colored and look like the REAL thing....Im going to look for them to price them for building. tc ttyl

    • @LifesJourneyNZPhilippines
      @LifesJourneyNZPhilippines  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dobiedoo2 The house is in Davao Oriental. No we will replace the roof in about 6 months, its 3yrs old? yes I have heard some minor leaks at night, only in real heavy rain tho, however our ceilings are made from Hardiflex so more waterproof than say ply or plasterboard so can handle leaks better. I have seen the roofs your talking about we will inquire more about certain brands and design when we are back there in July this year.

    Really enjoyed watching your house rising up! Thanks for sharing! It`s a really nice looking house and a lot too. Nice mountains behind! That was a very good opportunity to have this gravel so near of your property! Your soil seems to be good for growing plants, trees but how about the floods? Is there any? I hope not as this seems to be quite low-lying area? How about earthquakes, is there any? I just am wondering those hollow blocks in the Philippines they seem to be almost everywhere only 4 inches.. and very often too less cement and far too much sand in it. The work seems to be professional and fine quality, you have had fine workers there. Is this place somewhere near Davao, or where, may I ask? Really nice area as what I would prefer to have own privacy instead living in the very small lot neighbors TOO close all around! Are you going to live there in the Philippines and if so, as a young guy, what are you doing for your living. Sorry if I am too curious! Have a nice time! It`s more...not only FUN, but Life in the Philippines! Cheers! Leo

      Leksa Thanks for watching and subscribing to our channel :) My wife's parents old house used to flood because it was next to the river that's one reason I built here because its well away from river and they don't have to deal with Floods anymore. I have felt earthquakes there but nothing serious, we live in New Zealand so no more than we would get here. You can get the bigger blocks, they just cost a little more, the builders are used to working with the small blocks and they will know who makes the best in your area or you can even make your own. Our walls are heavily reinforced with steel rebar and filled with concrete, with a 2 inch layer over top of blocks of a concrete/sand mix skim finish. We were lucky our builder had worked on a large subdivision in Davao City and was a very skilled worker who took a lot of pride in his work, his team were very good and all lived in our village which was also great for the village because the workers spent there pay locally thus helping the community. Our Village is quite small 2000+ people mostly kids haha, but our section is big and neighbours aren't close but unfortunately sound travels far haha. The village is in Davao Oriental. We do plan to live there in approx 1yr. My wife's a teacher that will be our main income but there are other ways to make money which I will touch on in another video.

    • @LifesJourneyNZPhilippines
      @LifesJourneyNZPhilippines  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John, Our lot is just over an acre in size. The smaller blocks are only as good as the guy who made them, meaning some will break apart in your hands some dont, the best idea is try before you buy. We put alot of metal rebar in the walls and there are 10 solid concrete columns this house is solid. Thanks, Take care.

      Nothings hassle free in the Philippines ;)
      Foreigners cant own land in the Philippines only condos, land has to be under your wife's name. Getting the title for our land has been a VERY long process, full of twists and turns, and after 2yrs of red tape we are being told 1 more year before we get title, extremely frustrating. I must say our land is in what they call a CARP, I would avoid dealing with land if it involves this.

      +princess princess hello, It really depends on youe design and the materials you use, if you use high quality materials the house will cost more. Yes our house is big but there are bigger houses in the city. 2.mil should be enough to build a very nice house.

    Most foreigners, mostly Americans and British, I know that Pinays are married to are not good looking. But, yes, they are generous in giving and eventually build a house for them in the PH. Some of these foreigners, however are being kicked out, soon after the house has been built. Poor
    'forenjers,' In the PH, they always see foreigners, good looking, because of their light skin, blonde hair and blue eyes, but actually not considered good looking in their homeland. Similarly, their bank accounts are very limited back home, as well, but heir dollar value can stretch considerably in the PH. These men have difficulties finding females back home, the reason they go to the PH to try their luck. Good luck PH.

    Why do they put 3 inches of shite under floor tiles

    • @LifesJourneyNZPhilippines
      @LifesJourneyNZPhilippines  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Needs sturdy foundation so the tiles wont be hollow underneath and just break

      Gago Pala Co funny lol!!! But not all foreigners are handsome nor will build their pinay wife or gf a house 😀. But I pray that everyone, pinay or foreigners will find a genuine and lasting love regardless of whether they build a house or not.
      All the best.
