  • Bridges that go under water? It happens. Here you'll see us driving over and under the Chesapeake Bay to reach the tip of the Delmarva Peninsula. Known as the Eastern Shore of Virginia, we arrived to a windy day. So windy in fact, our kayaking tour was canceled. Massive waves were coming in off the Atlantic Ocean, quite a sight for those of us used to the Gulf of Mexico.
We still explored, but instead went on foot, through Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, and Kiptopeke State Park.

Oh yes, the whole drive up there from Virginia Beach was really nice.

The Chesapeake bridge and tunnel are a fascinating works of architecture. But I never knew this was nearby....

When I was planning the trip, I wanted to take the bridge/tunnel, so I just started researching what was on the other side. Turned out to be plenty up there!

That old harbor looks pretty interesting. I wonder what it was like in its heyday.

The old ships were put at Kiptopeke as a breakwater. Chincoteague has a nice harbor town vibe. We stopped there for lunch.
