  • This video will show you how to change the bearings in Stans 3.30 hubs, both the front and rear hubs. I'll also show you how to change the free hub bearings.
    This service is similar for all 3.30 Stans hubs but if yous are the HD hubs or road hubs I would recommend taking a quick look at the "ZTR/3.30 Hub Service Manual" at www.notubes.com (go to Help Center and look under Instructions).

    Really useful service instruction. Thanks.
    Apologies if anyone has posted this before, but using a piece of twine wrapped around the pawls allows you to slot the hub back on first time.

    Another great how to video Clint. Some additinal info: 1- You can make a DIY bearing press using some threaded rod, assorted washers, sockets, and a pair of nuts. Use a pair of wrenches to tighten. 2- When bearings start to fully seat the torque required should suddenly ramp up a lot. Do not tighten anymore (check visually that bearings are flush with shell). 3- When tapping out bearings, keep them straight (just like when you pit them in)-you can also use a bearing puller tool specifically for this task.

    Thanks so much for this video, Clint. It was extremely helpful. I was trying to simply clean and regrease my 3.30Ti hubs, but I could never figure out how to remove the rubber seal between the axle and freehub body - until I watched this video. Then I realized it's really a snap ring coated with rubber and covered in so much grease and grit that I couldn't see the holes in the ring. Apparently, the guy I bought the wheels from had never cleaned them. Your videos are very helpful and informative. Please keep them coming!

    Heat and cold are your friends when removing or installing bearings. I like to use a heat gun or hair dryer to warm up (not real hot though, you don't want to damage any seals that may be there) the hub and put an ice cube on the bearing before you tap the bearing out. When installing the bearing, put the bearing in the freezer for a bit and warm up the hub. It is amazing how much the interference fit will be lessened by the combo of the cold bearing and the warm hub.

    I use fishing line to get the pawls back into the body... works really well... just surround the pawls with the fishing line, push in 1/2 way, remove the line, and then push the freehub all the way in .

    Hoo my God... The best video U ever found.. Thanks s ok much for taking the time in doing it... awesome job and clear explanations... Ir can't get better than this. I don't understand why someone people click thumps down. Now I have a good understanding about this process. I have almost brand new electric bike and the front wheel started making a metal grounding noise in the front bearing. It sounds like something is breaking inside.. I don't understand the reason. It's a 2 months old bike. But I ride in the rain and snow making food deliveries in New York City.. it maybe the salt and dirty water from the streets that are destroying the bearings..

    Great video, thanks man. Had to do my rear bearings, was making a creak-like sound when pedaling. On the front wheel, I couldn't push that sleeve nearly enough out of the way, but luckily the bearings are still like new. For anybody about to do this, they have small Wheels Manufacturing bearing press kits all put together on ebay, but don't forget you'll likely need to buy the handles. It needs to have the over axle pieces. Driftset-Hub1 worked flawlessly for me.

    So timely, I have been putting this off for a few months.
    Getting the normal 9mm quick release end caps can be frustrating difficult and take more force than one may expect.
    With some of the rear hubs, there is both a spacer and a thin washer under the freehub.

    The bearings that came out are LBLU type, non-contact seal (black) facing inwards. Replacing them with the Enduro LLB seal-type bearings will result in roughly twice as more seal friction by adding unnecessary contact seals facing inwards towards one another.

    I've tried before to change the hub bearings with some sockets and a hammer before, and to install the new ones it is a nightmare to get them straight, a bearing press makes everything much easier.
    Are you also going to makea video on how to change the frame bearings? That would be very helpful...

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would like to but it will be awhile before I change frame bearings again. It's pretty similar to hub bearings. You would just pull the pivots apart and then tap out the bearings and then press in the new ones. The main thing you have to watch out for it is when you pull the pivots apart there are usually spacers in there so you have to pay attention to how they go.

    You helped me a lot with your detailed video. I plan on servicing a Sun Ringle SRC Fatbike Hub and it appears that the hub you showed and my fat bike hub are quite similiar. In fact I read elsewhere that Sun Ringle manufactures hubs for Stan's.
    I got told by a mechanican that he always renews the loctite fluid, e.g. at the screws holding a traditional disc rotor. I saw that at the end of the axle the screw cap is secured like that. It appears that you did not renew it. Did you have any trouble with the cap becoming loose after you did the service? Thanks in advance and thumbs up for the clip!

    I have a problem though... If I nip up drive side cap and put the wheel back, wheel does not roll freely, when tightened in frame...
    Having that screw cap loose it turns beautifully but seems to lead to thru axle loosening while riding...

  • @robwasnj
    @robwasnj 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great visual explanation for anyone redoing stan's hubs, I just did my dtswiss and syntace hub bearings without too much trouble. I like though how you were able to use the axle on the stan's rear to eject the bearings. One question I have for you though is how do you like the pawl system versus what dt uses which is 2 plates with teeth... the dt system is much simpler and I think possibly less likely to fail (I remember shimano rear pawls breaking in the 90's. Any thoughts on this system vs the other, benefits and drawbacks?

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +robwas can't give you a lot of plus/minus comparison but I've never had an issue wth Stan's freehubs. They are EXTREMELY easy to work on.

    • @robwasnj
      @robwasnj 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      From your video I could see they're easy to maintain. After writing this I realized DT swiss actually has a patent on the design with the 2 plates. They keep making them with more and more points of engagement, ie, finer teeth which seems great so you get instant forward motion when doing trails like stuff but the downside I'm finding are those smaller teeth can wear down faster and slip. Another thing about hubs, as much as I like my Germany made syntace ones I don't think I'd buy them again because getting parts or doing warranty claims now seems a real hassle as there are no dealers in the usa selling parts. I just wrote a letter, curious what service I'll get. When I bought them there was a usa dealer and the manager even gave me his cell number, getting parts wasn't an issue. I used to buy products on what I thought was the greatest and coolest but now I find myself doing my research prior to buying and checking out things like cost of replacement parts and availability as well as ease of self service. I wonder, say for example you needed one of those small pawl springs, everything else was ok but one broke... would you be able to get that or would you have to buy an entire kit of parts that cost 80 dollars? I've had those instances too many times with otherwise pristine parts but one small component failed (like the bracket axle assembly on an xtr derailleur).

    Finally got around to replacing my front hub 6902 bearing on 110mm Specialized front hub. When I got the end caps off and tried to push the spacer between the bearings, like you did with your finders on the video, to tap out the bearings it would not budge. I noticed one side of the hub is a not quite round, a little off. Could that make the spacer not budge?? The wheel is a little out of true.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      the best way to tell is just to put your finger in the bearings and spin them. If they feel sticky or crunchy then it's time to replace them. There are times where they will make noises but still feel smooth. Replace them in those cases as well.

I am thinking about adding a ceramic bearing to the places that are more solicited. I don't know where the creak is coming from. I am surprised how the bearings on the maestro don't last. I’ve been working on a 3.30RD rear to convert the axle to 142 but when I screw the drive side cap back on, the freehub drags on a lot to the point that it is hard for it to spin. I do have the spacer back in but I think it is not making enough contact. Any suggestions?

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My only guess would be that spacer that goes between the Hub in the freehub (if I'm recalling correctly).

  • @LuisManuelHdez
    @LuisManuelHdez 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are rear hub axles compatible as long as they're the same size? Say one brands 12x142 and another brands 12x142?

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. You may have to realign the brake calipers.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LuisManuelHdez I understood. What I'm saying is yes they will fit but the spacing for the disc may be slightly different between brands so you may have to readjust your caliper.

      My dilemma is this.. the rear hub on my SJ is formula, which is similar to dt swiss. I want to upgrade to a ratchet system from its 3 pawl but my axle will not allow it. Was thinking a dt swiss axle might solve this. Thanks for the replies.

    Hello. What is the brand of the bearing press?

  • @scootosan
    @scootosan 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can overhaul the bearings pull off the seal and lube. But never use a socket to install that only put pressure on one chase when need on both for even pressure. Recommend a Bearing Press or take to your LBS

    • @3g0r3
      @3g0r3 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You don't know much about bearing maintenance, when you call bearing races "chase" Also you only apply pressure to the single race which is in contact to the surface being pressed into.

    There is a weird noise from my hub. One bike mechanic said that I need a new freehub driver, but the main one that I go to said that The QR wasn't properly screwed in. The noise cam back and I took it to him. He now said that after he had the bike for 2 weeks that he was re-packing the bearings. I'm picking it up tomorow. I can't recreate the noise after he does that, it has to be pushed hard in a trail. What do you think I should do becuase my lbs is about 40k from me which is about 1.5 hr drive because it is downtown.

      Clint Gibbs dude, let me just say ur like the Flash with how quick u respond. But yes I think they are loose bearings. They are the ones that come stock on a giant anthem 27.5 3. Btw congrats on over 1 million views on your cleaning video. It helped me a lot☺☺☺

      Try Springs and WD-40 between the bearings and the Hub and letting it sit overnight. Lay the wheel sideways so it can work its way in there.

    Thanks for making the video, but it's kind of annoying that you go to all the trouble to make a 25 minute video and not provide more details on how to use the bearing press. For example on the side of the bearing press where you are not driving in the bearing, do you place the same size drift (like 6902), and then use spacers?

    Why would you change bearings after a year? I am puzzled.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The front ones were making a little bit of a clicking noise. Changing them resolved it. The back ones I did just because I was doing the front ones, and I'm meticulous about maintenance.

    • @bewg10
      @bewg10 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Changing the bearings so early probably had something to do with their fragility, since their primary use in smaller sized hubs is largely aimed at reducing weight. I've had the same problem with my rear 3.30 hub after about a year also.

    • @boxlid214
      @boxlid214 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MarChe Chan Full-ceramic isn't a good idea for wheel bearings, you only want hybrid silicon nitride with steel races in the wheels. Full ceramic races tend to explode when you hit something that is too rough.
