    The braid and a little stiffer rod has definitely been a huge game changer for me....a lot more hook ups ! !

    Thanks for reinforcing the setup and tear down first and last. I always think about it and get too excited to set up the tent first when I could be fishing the jaw jacker

    I add brass fishing bells to the tip of my rod, this allows me to know exactly when the jaw jacker goes off, it also let's me know if the fish is still on the line or if the jaw jacker sprung but didn't set the hook. Super helpful when your in the hut, and they're outside.

    Great vid, thanks! For those that swear by Ugly Sticks, there is the Ice Runner 36" Medium [ USIR361M ] that has a smooth parabolic action that seems to work well with my JJ. I also use Convergence sticks, St. Croix, Elliot...all have their uses depending on the target species. But I typically will be caught with the Ugly Stick Ice Runner in the JJ.

    first thing that goes in the water is my LiveScope :) lol...then yes..the jaw jacker.... just bugging you Pal! good video, mentioning the proper rod strength was a very good tip for new jaw jacker users! I use a longer rod (Frost Bite, Digger 39ML) I find the it gives a longer recoil to really set the hook well.

  • @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures

    I don't use braided line on my Jaw Jacker. Really depends on what you are fishing for. Braid may just rip the hook right out of the fishes mouth. For example my buddies loaded up all their rods with braid for Cascade lake Perch. First day they had triggers and none stuck. They switched out to mono like mine and next day had many hookups and landed fish. So braid may not always be the answer.

    • @the-mountainlife
      @the-mountainlife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya I realize it’s not perfect for every scenario, but I think far and wide I have had better luck with the braid. It never hurts to have a backup for the rare occasions. That surprises me that the jumbos of cascade were getting their lips ripped....?

    • @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
      @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@the-mountainlife yeah I'm a huge fan of braid. I use it on the ocean, salmon and steelhead on the rivers, lakes and ice fishing pike, walleye and lakers. Just found in shallow water for Perch, trout and whitefish on the jaw jacker using small tungsten jigs the braid seems like too much. Works great for lake trout, pike and walleye though.

    • @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
      @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@the-mountainlife Oh forgot to answer the rippin lips part. You know I can't be 100% sure what was happening. All I know is that with the same small tungsten jigs day one by buddies and braid didn't hook one and I naile a bun on mine with mono. Day who they switched there jaw jacker rods to mono and it was game on for all of us. That was the only variable changed besides the day. I figure most of the time I use tiny 3 to 7 mm tungsten jigs, they require hardly any penetration power since they are such tiny hooks.

    • @the-mountainlife
      @the-mountainlife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures Hmmm, seems like you definitely put some thought into what was going on. Another variable I wonder about: did you guys compare tension on the Jaw Jacker wingnut?

    • @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures
      @TheFishingDoctorsAdventures 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@the-mountainlife they used the same jaw jackers from the day prior to the next day. Didn't change the tension. Only the line. We usually set them quite light.

      great for ice fishing because you can fish 2 (or more-depending where you live) lines at a time. So gives you an extra 'arm' if you will.

    • @ColoradoConlan
      @ColoradoConlan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This allows you to fish multiple holes by yourself. I’ve set out extra rods without jawjacker and lost many poles through the ice so this will prevent that!

    I hear you about setting your traps first, especially when you have non fishing chores to do. However, as a bucket-sitting jigger, I’ve decided to jig my holes first, then set out the traps. Too many times I’m interrupted by the sprung traps. Better to exhaust the hole, then set up the trap. Imo, jigging is more enticing and more efficient . While I set out traps with worms, more trout fall to the jig pole even tho I set out two traps. I want first crack at a new hole, or rested hole, with my jig pole.

    I agree with the reasoning behind using braid, but I feel that is only applicable if you're fishing deep waters 30fow or more. Under 30fow, I think the stretch is negligible.

    • @eddiebelzebuth
      @eddiebelzebuth ปีที่แล้ว

      The stretch may be negligible on the mono, but the slack from the memory of the line can be very significant, like he stated in the video.

    Do you find it difficult to use live minnows with the jawjacker? I got a lot of 'pops' from the jacker over the past few days that didn't result in hookups. I had already adjusted the wingnut to tighten the trigger tension, anticipating that the minnow might set off the trigger. I wonder if the fish are biting the head or tail of the minnow and not getting hooked.

    • @savagereloader6699
      @savagereloader6699 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Though I don't use live minnows where I am due to laws, I have found certain rods better for hook ups than others to the point where I invented in the jaw jacker rods especially when using non treble hooks. To overcome that you may have better results using a longer rod that you can bend down and back to the tip security on the jaw jacker, down sizing your hooks, or running a stinger hook with the minnow and jig. This may help for those finicky Walleye bites if that's what playing with you. Just some tips I have found helps and hopefully can help you.

    • @leomdk939
      @leomdk939 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@savagereloader6699 Thanks for the tips ... I've already ordered longer rods (actual Jawjacker rods) and I will start to use treble hooks ... not sure the stinger is legal here, I'll have to look it up. (And it's finicky brook trout that are playing with me. :P)

    • @xv1670
      @xv1670 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Try using the bobber hack that the auto fisherman employs. It allows the fish to take and run with the bait for a foot or so before the hook is set.
      This uses a slip bobber between the first 2 eyelets closest to the reel. Run the line through the slip bobber, attatch terminal tackle as you normally would and set up the jaw jacker. With the bobber, pull line on it so it hangs low on the ground. As the fish takes the bait and runs, it will raise the bobber inline with the rod and when taught, should trigger the hookset.

    • @the-mountainlife
      @the-mountainlife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually my preference would be something in light or dark green as this seems to match the water color a little better. The braid in this video isn’t my preferred color, but it’s what I had.

  • @leomdk939

    Do you have any problems with the braid freezing up, since braid holds water? Also, have you tried ice braid and do you find there to be any worthwhile difference? It's much more expensive, so I wonder if it's actually better.

    • @xv1670
      @xv1670 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Braid freezes, yes, but these setups just sit and soak bait. Frozen braid on the spool should not affect the functionality of the hook set. I see it as only an inconvenience when reeling in the fish and resetting the bait as ice builds up on the eyelets and on the spool.

    How to set your drag when using a jawjacker? Should it be tight or loose so after the fish gets set it can pull drag

    • @the-mountainlife
      @the-mountainlife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I keep my drag set as though I normally would when fighting fish. If you want the fish to run with it, but still be able to fight the fish on your fishing rod as opposed to a tip up, you should look at the iFish Pro.

      And what’s your opinion on hooks I like to use treble hooks should I use a single or treble with the jaw jacker?

    • @the-mountainlife
      @the-mountainlife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Kenny, good questions. I run braided line down to a swivel and then a few feet of mono to the lure. Also, I guess it depends on what bait you are using regarding hooks. I typically don’t use a treble but tip some kind of ice fly/jighead with part of a mealworm or wax worm. Good luck!

    You must not fish for trout, no way they would bite straight braid. Try flourocarbon, has low stretch but may have some memory, but if you use a couple splitshot that should take care of it.
