  • Video by Adam | On Tuesday, February 4, 2025, around 3 a.m., a fatal accident occurred on Manhattan's FDR Drive near the 71st Street exit. A white Tesla, reportedly traveling at high speed northbound, struck a guardrail and burst into flames. Both occupants were ejected from the vehicle upon impact. The female driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 26-year-old male passenger was transported to New York Presbyterian Hospital - Cornell Burn Unit in stable condition. The incident led to significant traffic disruptions, with the FDR Drive closed for several hours as emergency crews worked to extinguish the fire and clear the scene. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.

I'm a firefighter in Alabama and we once responded to a Tesla car fire on the interstate that required over 30,000 gallons of water just to extinguish it due to the lithium batteries that were almost inextinguishable. I've never had to battle heat like that before and I hope I never do again. We ended up having to bury the vehicle until they were able to come back and remove it again due to the high likelihood of it reigniting. Real talk.

they had to contain the fire and cooldown the battery, its only 1 car and they have infinite amount of water supply so its fine

This is a whole different extremely high powered animal if the accelerator sticks. I don't think experienced professional drivers can handle an extreme emergency like this. Imagine a 10 second car in traffic with a stuck gas pedal, all you are doing during the panic period is trying not to hit another vehicle. You have no ability to react to the problem of accelerator malfunction and I'm pretty sure having no key to turn off or shift lever to throw into neutral or park is a huge issue. These cars are uncontrollable death traps with immense power sold to very low experienced drivers. Cut the power displacement way down and get more mileage and save lives. Sorry for their loss.

@ I thought the interviewee said they were racing? I had the unfortunate experience of encountering a driver who was DUI on the road, yesterday, on my way home from work. They were driving super slow on the expressway, weaving all over the lane and brake checking. I called 911 and reported it. True story. I hope we all follow suit, if we ever are in this situation.

Some of the comments said the accident in not because of a Tesla but speed. tesla prone to accident not due to speed only but to acceleration, it can reaches 60MPH in just 3 seconds (best sport cars achieve 60MPH in 5 to 7 seconds) so the person behind the Tesla to control the car with speeding and accelerating must drive better than a F1 to control the car in the street.
