For those having trouble hearing the call, go to 1:02 and 1:41. It makes a soft trill sound during the entire video, but you can't really tell until you get to those timestamps. Just watch as its chest puffs out, that's when the call is made!
These are in my backyard every night around 2am. Such mystical creatures!! Good luck getting a pic!! I use TH-cam videos of people that have filmed their calls and I blast it out loud on my bluetooth speaker at my firepit to get them to come in! Got one blurry pic in a full year! Edit: should mention I'm almost at the tip of southern Ontario, Canada 👍

They can also do either sound louder or softer. Typically the whinny is louder. When they are looking for a mate or scaring off a rival, they can get pretty loud, especially for such a tiny little ball of feathers.

@@gardensofthegods same like now that i think about it, i go in the woods all the time during fall and winter and always thought this was some sort of crow or other corvid. i never knew it was specifically an owl. i only just now heard a great horned owl outside my house for the first time. for reference, it is 2:30 in the morning and it sounds literally terrifying to someone who has never heard an owl actually make a noise in real life

Look up Screech Owl whinny call. They can be much louder when doing their whinny. Depends on the reason for the call, whether it is loud or soft. They don't ever actually "screech". That would be the barn owl, who has an awful sound. That could scare you to death if you heard it in a dark woods at night.👀👁👁🥶

I had an eastern grey phase screech owl in 1984 He would stand on my gloved hand while I walked around with him . I fed him chicken .

The slso make a much louder sound called a whinny. Sounds sort of like a high pitched horse neigh. Still not a screech or a hoot, but it can get loud.
