My 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Redd, required all of her students to learn this verse of the Star Spangled Banner. I am 68 years old now, and I still remember every word.
She cant do that now in Commie California which is a pity😢

Now that's how you sing it. No frills, no dragging, no altering in any way. Just straight, simple, on tempo, and in key. Having been a former band member who has played it numerous times, I tend to be highly critical. 10/10, this is probably one of the best solo performances I've ever heard.
Very clearly stated. It always amazes me when the entire song is not song. I tease my church choir director that if I would ever write a song for Church it would not have a 3rd verse because it seems that the one that is skipped. I especially like that you pointed out that this gentleman presented the song the way it is meant to be sung.

Downloaded a version with all four verse a while back. (I THINK it was a military rendition) the the thing that struck me was how on every verse, when they got to the part about the star spangled banner, I swear you could hear the rafters shudder from the vibration. I realize it was just in my head, but that defiant echo on the second to last line of every verse always feels right to me. As though you were pushing an enemy back with the sheer force of your determination.
From my perspective as an Aussie, I just want to say that you citizens of USA have by far the most amazing and inspiring national anthem. It gives me tingles hearing it

At first, I don't think people recognized the lyrics. Most people don't know that the Anthem has four verses, and he sang the last verse. But once they did, on their feet they went.

"Ramparts," in case you don't know, are the protective walls or other elevations that surround a fort. The first stanza asks a question. The second gives an answer

As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,

"The towering steep" is again, the ramparts. The bombardment has failed, and the British can do nothing more but sail away, their mission a failure.
In the third stanza, I feel Key allows himself to gloat over the American triumph. In the aftermath of the bombardment, Key probably was in no mood to act otherwise.
During World War II, when the British were our staunchest allies, this third stanza was not sung. However, I know it, so here it is

That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footstep's pollution.

I am a fan of Asimov's work -- both his fiction and non-fiction. His guide to Shakespeare, for example is incredible. Foundation trilogy is the best of the genre.
Did he not have any commentary about the second half of verse three which refers to the murder of slaves? Is what you posted an excerpt or did Asimov's "new ears" not hear this awful part of the poem?

Watching all the people begin to stand up in recognition and pride as this great man gave an amazing lesson to us all was incredible. They recognized this verse as their national anthem, because it IS our national anthem.
Whether or not you know only the first verse, or know every verse, this is the Star Spangled Banner of the United States of America, and I will proudly be standing for it until the day I can't stand any longer. I'm also happy and proud to know that I won't be standing alone.

Francis Scott Keys' one error I always correct. In our church hymnals (Yes, we use hymnals - no CCP, I mean CCM) I scratched out "proudly" and substituted "gladly" because the Bible says that "God resisteth the proud."
I urge everyone to do the same.

I am a New Zealander and that fourth verse of the star spangled banner was brilliantly sung by that Marine. The lawyer Mr Key who wrote that anthem as he witnessed the British Ships cannon fire pounding the rampart the American Colonialists Flag stood on is an inspired man like unto President George Washington. 11 years later & this still brings tears to my eyes.
God bless this man, and I am so glad that there are people like him in my country. I wish they would teach our national anthem in schools again, as well as the salute to the flag. I am so tired of the brainwashing media, and miss patriotism and people who respect and love this country as this man clearly does. As a conservative who cares about this nation and it's values, I think it's time that we have a presence that can combat the oppressive left.

I am humbled.
I am a Canadian and was honored to sing the American anthem at the canada Day picnic held in Yuma Az in 2002. If I had known that there was a second verse I would have very proudly sung it. That Marine should be sining at all events. He has a strong, wonderful voice. God bless him and all who have served.

Then you should study the origins of the anthem and understand ALL of the verses. Such as the racist part about genocide and murdering slaves. He skipped this part:

Sadly I think they fazed out cursive writing for that exact reason...if you don’t know your rights, you don’t have any rights!
There are standard print transcripts of the constitution and it’s also very easy to read cursive script even if you don’t know how to write in cursive. It’s not like cursive gives some additional meaning to the document that doesn’t exist otherwise. I’m not saying we shouldn’t teach kids cursive. I just don’t understand how cursive is relevant or necessary to comprehending and understanding the constitution.
But that’s why they stopped teaching it. They wouldn’t be able to lie about it if the kids could actually read it.

Ditto, I'm an ex pat Brit duel national living in Sydney who lived in Cal' and Utah for 2 years over 36years ago, and I still have 3 verses of The Banner memorized to this day. Love the song/hymn and all it represents. For all its faults I still love the country, its history and it's people.

"the hireling and slave" The black slaves and those who were in what was basically slavery to pay off debts, who fled their plantations and owner's manors and joined the british to gain their freedom, but the song glorifies their slaughter. Dunno, seems rather hypocritical.
The slave verse refers to the American sailors impressed into british service during the Napoleonic Wars. Which was the pretense for the American Declaration of war.

It's a case of "it looks good on paper," then reality sets in. With a backdrop of the War for Independence and even the War of 1812, our future moral failures stand out in stark contrast, but those failures are the same failures of all alpha nations. You can see America as an example and moral leader, or as the world's leader in hypocrisy. Both are real, which one you choose to emphasize says more about you than America.

I met this man at a little Dollar General in Winston , Georgia a few years ago. He struck up a conversation asking me if i had been saved . I told him yes and then he began talking to me about the obama administration and all they had in mind to do us in these United States. I listened to him and this began a new journey for me with God and getting closer and closer to the ALMIGHTY ! This gentlman was spot on about the agenda and I appreciate SO MUCH that I met him. Of equal note, no where in that song does it say only white people and white people's homes should be fought for and protected. It means all people living in and loving the USA.
Its also worth noting that the first mention of slavery in the Constitution is its prohibition.

Our oaths never expire, but oaths don't get you restricted area badges, access to the armory, continued security clearances, access to AAFES or any of the services that keep you operationally ready. Former is far more accurate.

We are a praying nation only if we choose to be. There's also the important factor of knowing the God we pray to who gives us the opportunity to enjoy such freedom and make the choice freely to embrace or eschew the advantages it brings.
