How much did YouTube pay me for 1 million views?

When I wanted to get monetized on TH-cam, I watched all sorts of films trying to work out what I might expect to earn. There were huge channels with millions of followers and they earned millions of dollars, but what about a small art channel? Would I ever make any money or would I always be doing it for the love of watercolour (I would probably still do this if I earned nothing, but something really helps!!). It was hard to find information, so I thought I would share how much I made in 2023, in case you are thinking of building your channel next year.
I got monetized in June 2022. I am an artist in the UK and my channel is all about watercolour. I had been on TH-cam since 2010, but only to watch. I uploaded one film in 2013 and did nothing more until 2018. Then a few in 2019 - mostly about artwork or exhibitions. Well 2020 struck and I started making films for my art class students, as we could not meet during lockdown. I realised more than my students were watching and I go a few subscribers, but as a New Year resolution I decided to upload a film every week in 2022 and to try and get monetized. I did it in June and from there the channel has gradually grown. 2023 is the first full year of monetization. I uploaded 77 films, got 50000 likes and one million views. I now have 34,000 subscribers (which is irrelevant for the amount you get paid). So what did all that mean I got paid?
If you have any questions, I will try and help. Just leave a comment - I read them all. I made a follow up film with lots of answers to questions, as this film got 30,000 views in its first week. You can see it here: • How much did TH-cam p...
Every week I share a tip, trick or technique I wish I had known when I started painting, so if you enjoyed this please like, comment and subscribe. Or if you have a watercolour problem, let me know and maybe I can help?

When you said, "I'm a woman, sitting in a shed, talking about watercolor" I hit the subscribe button. 🌟😂🌟
ha ha, actually to be fair, I'm a middle aged crone, sitting talking to herself, shivering, in a shed, at the bottom of the garden, while it's raining too hard to run back to the warm house, talking about watercolour. But that was a bit long winded!!!
Hahaha....that would have been hysterical to hear and I'm sure, added to your subscriptions! 😉😁🤣🙏🏼
Bother! Missed that opportunity!@@surrender1903
Saaaaaame! ❤
Me too! 😂
You’re the first TH-camr i’ve ever seen openly divulging these numbers! And I love your artwork, subscribed! 🎉
Really?? Glad you found it interesting and hope you enjoy it here.
You’d be surprised. There are 1000s of these types of videos. Many TH-camrs are quite happy to divulge their earnings as they’re very proud of having been able to produce really good content. Indeed…these type of videos themselves make them a lot of money because everyone finds these details fascinating. 👍🏼
I’ve seen this type of film before, but a lot of people don’t seem to have, so I guess it gets served up to different audiences@@carronalee
I agree and subscribed also.🙂
Thank you and welcome @@kelly851
I suspect you will get a large boost in subscribers from this video. You presented the information in a clear and easy to understand way. It's a shame TH-cam doesn't even have a category for art and artists, but all the best for continued success and fun in 2024!
Thank you! I’ve been blown away by the reaction- and I almost didn’t make the film as I thought no one would be interested
You are right, There are loads of art channels @@PrimeDirective101
I am not an artist but I have just subscribed as I found what you had to say very interesting. My creative form is in patchwork and making bags this is my happy place. I hope you reach your goal and as for the amount you make per month it’s not to be sneezed at. ❤
Yes, I’ve clicked like and I’ve subscribed as I’ve been meaning to start trying water colours for years. You have inspired me to start watching your channel. Thank you
Super! There are some amazing channels on TH-cam, so you should be able to find inspiration no matter what your style or subject interest.@@tinaashley4202
I found this so interesting! A glimpse behind the curtain of TH-cam creators. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Because of your honesty in showing the views and how you made, you earned my subscription. This video is inspiring. Thanks for making it
I appreciate that!
same
This is the first time I’d seen anyone break down how TH-camrs get paid so I decided to watch. When you said you were a watercolor artist, I decided to subscribe. Watercolor has always been my favorite medium when it comes to painting. I’m a retired teacher now, not interested in starting a TH-cam channel, but I will be watching your lessons and techniques on watercolor painting. Thank you in Virginia Beach, VA. ✌🏽🙏🏽
Fabulous! Welcome and I hope you enjoy it here
Stephanie at Chateau Diaries has been very transparent about what she earns also.
I’ve seen lots of these films, but a lot of people haven’t seen it before. I guess that’s tge good old algorithm at work…@@dianemiller7994
Caught me too, subscribed w notifications! Look forward to watching your vlogs.
Welcome!@@stylafuture7523
This video was recommended by TH-cam. I'm delighted it was! You're charismatic and funny whilst giving such valuable information.
I hit the subscribe button after about 2 minutes! Here is to 50k subs this year 💜
Wow, thank you and welcome!
Yep, random TH-cam recommendation for me as well ... think you're going to have a good month. :)
Yes! It’s a great end to 23/ start of 24. Onwards and upwards I hope!@@billk9856
This was so interesting and informative Liz not only for art TH-camrs but for anyone wanting to get monetised on this platform. I hope it goes viral for you!
This film has done so well, which is crazy … not quite viral, but certainly good enough!
@@LizChadertonArt 😄
I don’t have any suggestions because I don’t know why you showed up in my feed as I am a quilter not an Artist! But I know a thumbs up and a comment always helps so here you go!
very kind of you!
I made a similar point. Curious how You Tubes algorithm works!
Hi - I must say that quilters are artists too! There are many ways to be artistic. 😺
Yes, gardeners can be artists. We all express our creativity differently@@katdistefano8551
Well done, Liz. Onward and upward.
TH-cam Shorts are more like making advertisements for you channel, only you don't have to pay for your adverts to be shown. I've started following several channels which I came across through TH-cam shorts. So it may be worth your while doing an abbreviated version of your video and invite people to come and watch the full version.
I have done that a few times. It’s interesting shorts get more dislikes than longs. I think they are shown widely, and sometimes to the wrong people. But free ad is a good way of looking at them. Thank you!
I clicked on this and love your voice. Grateful you shared what you made and how it works.
I will spend time watching your films.
Welcome to the channel!
Thank you for being so transparent! Honestly, you and your content are the true GOLD of TH-cam. I don't know those millionaires, and I'm really not interested in them. I am interested in learning from down to earth, talented people, with a sense of humor, to boot - people like you! I think you definitely deserve a lot more. This year, I purchased your beautiful book, Painting Animals in Watercolour, and I think it's so great, filled with your practical advice and great "tips and tricks". Thanks! What would I like to see more of? Any animal paintings tutorials, maybe outdoor/wilderness sketching (vs. urban buildings), and any advice on organizing your materials and your time, etc. I don't need any more art supplies, but I appreciate how when you review a product, you usually do a demo painting. Thank you so much for creating this channel. Wishing you the best of luck in 2024! I'm sure you'll get to 100K subscribers soon! ❤🍀🌟🍀❤
Apparently you get sent a trophy from TH-cam if you hit 100,000! Tgat would be fun. Thanks for all your support.
Mr. Beast is the most philanthropic human ever. Talk about making a difference in the world!
@@Sanity_Faire that's good to know. I still haven't watched his channel yet
I had my doubts and now I’m on board! @@LizChadertonArt
Hi Liz, I’m not into watercolour, but you caught my eye with this title. Congratulations on your mil subs. The reason I’m writing is, I was following a van dweller and he was making videos, but was saying how TH-cam wanted him to do shorts, so what he did was just take a section of his big video and post it as a short. Just an idea for you.
yes, I guess I should do that, but my heart isn’t really in it…
Hello from Australia. I stumbled across your channel and subscribed. I enjoyed the way you presented the information about monetisation. I will look at all of your previous videos about art as I’ve always wanted to learn to paint however I’ve never had the confidence.
I hope you are inspired to have a go. I also have courses including a beginners over at www.lizchadertonstudio.co.uk
You deserve every penny they grant you! Many thanks for your so helpful and pleasant videos Liz
Thank you so much!
Came across this purely by chance - fascinating!
glad you enjoyed it!
I like your honesty about the financial aspects of having a youtube channel. TH-cam is not a favorite of mine because of their policies, so I watch only a few select channels there. Including yours😄. And I think you deserve every penny that you get from them. I heard that on rumble you can earn more money per view, but the audience on that platform is smaller. So if you can and want, please keep giving us some nice tips👍🏻 even when it’s on youtube 🤣. Also, still love your gold leaf paintings behind you. Beautiful!
Thank you - interesting. Which policies? Everything is about keeping advertisers happy. I will be sticking here ( I’ve never been on Rumble)
@@LizChadertonArt thx for your reply Liz! I used to also watch some news channels on youtube and noticed that using a perfectly reasonable but ‘wrong’ word could get you blocked or suspended. Luckily that is probably unlikely to happen on a watercolor channel 😄. However, i once heard about a knitting channel (of all places🤣🤣) that was banned because they showed a knitting pattern that youtube found suspicious!😱. But I will keep watching watercolor channels here because most artist creators are on youtube.
Those knitting needles can be lethal weapons…. Facebook has often taken down paintings of chickens, because you can’t sell animals on Facebook 🥴@@wimotten8353
Oh my,,knitting needles and chickens, hazardous? 😂😂 interesting you didn't mention algorithms,,,Diane Anton in France did a very detailed piece about how all those numbers get jumbled up and TH-cam decides who sees what, and when! And remind your subscribers to check and see if they are still subscribed as somehow they get bumped off😮😊
It's an awful lot of work for you but I appreciate the efforts you put in, I don't even know if I am subscribed,,,I spend more time watching than my own painting, somethings gotta give!! ❤😊
Very, very interesting and charming video. Thank you.
Thank you so much for posting this video. I had always wondered how the monetization worked with TH-cam. You did such a nice job of explaining it simply and clearly.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for being so frank about how TH-cam monetization works. Also, about how much you make in doing art videos. I'm not passionate enough about one thing to start my own channel, let alone keep up with it! BTW, I've subscribed! 😊
You are so welcome! You do need quite a well of enthusiasm to keep at it 😁
yeah some claim they dont make much money but have millions of views per month...literally...ie Alex Ferrari...
If it’s millions of views on shorts they won’t make much@@lisetteem588
Fascinating. Thanks for sharing Liz, so informative. I’m sure your subscriber numbers will increase this year as your films are so relevant, thank you for them. All the best! 😊
I hope so! thank you
Loved watching. Thank you for your lovely disposition and frankness.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Delightful to meet you, Liz! More helpful video than you know. I’m a new subscriber!
Glad it was helpful! And welcome to the channel
You’re earning more than I thought you would be so I’m happy to hear that. I’m not surprised that the niche one is in, or country, greatly impacts revenue. When you think about cost of good filming equipment and time spent editing… I’m just grateful that people with a passion are willing to share content. It’s easily a part time job on top of other family and work commitments.
It does take quite some time, but I see it supporting all the other bits of my art. I did a follow up film after all the comments and questions on the first if you are interested: th-cam.com/video/wWd6Uqg2Kvk/w-d-xo.html Happy New Year!
I’ve been watching your videos from overseas for quite some time now. Every time I use Dorland’s wax on top of a piece, I think of you - because I learned how to do it from you in one of your videos! Thank you for taking the time to make videos, and for sharing your experience and perspective!
Edit: I just reached the end of your video and realized my comment didn’t answer what you asked your audience. I am not an expert on how people gain subscribers…but I can tell you the reason *I* subscribed, and it’s because you are pleasant to watch and listen to, and you clearly know your stuff when it comes to watercolors and art. And you’re obviously passionate about art - that comes through in your videos. I hope you surpass the goal you set for yourself of 50K subscribers!
Thank you for such a useful answer! It’s really nice to know something has helped … and I do love Dorlands
I learned about the Dorland's wax from Liz's channel too! I just bought some and am going to give it a go. Maybe she should could get them to sponsor her videos that focus on their product.
Very nicely put Erica! 👍🏻🥰
I would do it for a huge vat of Dorlands! @@lisap5615
I am going to try my first application of Dorland's wax on a watercolor I hope will brighten up a bit and save me a ton of framing costs, too. You video will definitely be a rewatch and I am sending your channel link to a friend who does watercolor painting for a living. She is retired and wanting to make a go of it for a living. Thank you so much.
So glad i just found you. I am a retired law enforcement officer. I’m learning watercolor, certainly nowhere near artist level, but i thoroughly enjoy the process. I subscribed & hope to grow in my personal enjoyment with your tutelage. I love your personality & laid back style. I can’t wait to learn.
Thank you for being here!
Welcome!! The whole point is to enjoy the journey and we all never stop learning or wanting to be better
You are the only one I have seen that has ever addressed this, so it was very interesting. I am glad you are making some extra income from art that you love. I would say for TH-cam that I believe a person should be fairly compensated for the skills or information they share from the beginning, a fair portion of the revenue your content generates. I watch TH-cam a lot and have many different ones I watch. I watch this way more than I do television, more interesting. I have not seen you pop up in my feed for a while, so it was nice to see you again😊
I have seen a few people doing this and I thought it would be interesting to do too. Thank you for subscribing
Congratulations on your achievement, I have learnt a lot of stuff from you and other TH-cam channels, so I’m grateful for you presence online! You are very generous teaching us and I think you tube should pay more to the content creators that are teaching something, because it is almost altruistic work, given all the time and effort it takes to do it.
Thank you so much! I do get a lot from it too, so payment is a bonus.
Hi Liz, TH-cam recommended this video and I’m glad they did. I really enjoyed your honest and unvarnished viewpoint on earning on TH-cam. People’s reasons for setting up a channel are always interesting viewing and I think art content is difficult to navigate. I’m off to watch more of your back catalogue now and just wanted to wish you continued success in the future
Thank you so much! I hope you find lots you like.
Same here. I've no idea why it was recommended, but it was worth a watch, like and comment :-)

Great work! I like your persistency. I was filming for months on my main channel. Hours of great content but I just couldn't get any recognition. I wanted to delete my channel, but luckily a came across guys from Fame- ster. They pushed me with first 1k subs and a bit of views. Now I have 20k of real people following me on my main channel
congratulations!
I do not have a YT channel nor am I intending to start one; however, I like the way you came out with all the facts. For that reason, I have subscribed to your channel and do hope you keep up the good work.
Thank you and welcome 😊
Thank you for your honesty, so interesting. I’m an acrylic painter but TH-cam highlighted your post and I’m so glad it did. I’m now off to watch some of your back catalogue. Congratulations on finding what you are happy doing and getting paid for it, continued success, well deserved.
Thank you so much and hope I might persuade you over to watercolours 😂
I hope you have an enjoyable and positive year. I thought the breakdown of your channel data was interesting. I watch quite a few videos on You Tube. Not too many art videos though, but I watched this one.:-)
Happy new year! And thank you for watching
Thank you for sharing!!! I figured utubers must be happy with the pay or they wouldn't do it... of course, the joy of creating is included!!! You're very personable and easy to listen to... I subscribed. I've done watercolor for about 18 months and have stopped painting for about the same period. I started at 68 ( now 71) and was absolutely thrilled the first time I put paint on paper! Beautiful!!!
I wish you continued success and a happy journey as you create more videos!!! God bless you in 2024, with love from a California Gramma ❤
Yes... just read another comment on doing "shorts"... good for getting recognized and the exposure! ❤
That was so generous of you! I've always wondered. Thank you for sharing that info. And I love your videos.
Thank you so much!
Hello, Liz! Thank you so much for the insight into exactly what one can expect to make when monetized on YT! I've toyed with the idea for a number of years and have always held back. No time like the present!
go for it!
This popped up by accident and you have been the most honest person with a very down to earth explanation of how it works - I have been considering starting a channel - still not sure but thank you very much for providing the best explanation so far. Good luck ahead
The best time to start is ages ago! So I would get going and learn on the way. You can always delete the old films later on if they are embarrassing!
Hi Liz, this came up on my home screen out of the blue! I am guessing because i have viewed TH-cam monetisation videos in the past. Brilliant video. Informative, clear and best of all interesting. Good luck and am guessing this will be your largest earner by quite some way 😊 btw am hopeless at art and have no interest in painting myself but I did purchase a painting by a winner of Watercolour Challenge 17 years ago 😂
I’ve been trying to answer this, but TH-cam won’t post! glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you Liz for sharing your wonderful teaching gift. Your transparency and honesty around what you do, what works what doesn't, as well as so many fresh ideas you bring to the table. Hi Liz, I am a very amateur watercolour artist and I have learned a great deal from you and other you tube artists. All of the people I watch are kind and encouraging which is what I need to keep going with my desire to paint. I love your art and your videos. This was an interesting video as I had no idea how you tube worked for those who put out videos. I can tell it is a lot of work and I do appreciate the time and effort you put in to your videos, keep on doing this and I will keep watching.

I so appreciate this video. I just happened to come across it. I just happen to be taking a water paint class soon, but I have been seriously thinking about the whole TH-cam thing. I am a homemaker/cook and I am very much a artistic lifestyle person. I found it to be just so helpful.

seriously?? That is so brilliant to hear. and THAT is why I do TH-cam. I love watercolour and want everyone else to too.
I have seen other TH-cam people divulge this info but was never interested in watching all the way through. You somehow made it more interesting and I frankly had no idea why anyone would do this because I thought there was no money in it unless people joined Patreon and I cannot afford that on my tiny social security check. So good on ya for making money and I will start to watch because I love to paint. Thanks
I don’t do Patreon as it would just be another distraction from painting!
This is so helpful Liz, you popped up in my feed and I am so glad I watched it. When i am not gardening I might even make the time to give it a go painting x
oooh, I’d be happy for another convert. painting and gardening go so well together

You Tube suggested this video (amongst all my “chateau” channels), I found it very interesting & informative.
More importantly, I found you very likable and have subscribed to learn something about water color, even though I’ve never painted anything in my life! 😊
ooh, I hope I can persuade you to try watercolour!
Outstanding and informative video Liz. I even learned more than I knew having been doing tutorials about as long as you have. The mistake I made is not continuously creating videos because life got in the way. I am trying again to get videos up and going again and getting monetized again, 🤪. Don’t stop creating videos Liz. You are fantastic and so is your art.
The only way I could do it was the discipline of once a week, otherwise life squeezed it out. I love your films too so I hope you get back into it xx

I really enjoyed this video & learned a lot. Your pacing is perfect and you are not loud and full of yourself. A true gem. Thanks
thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it.
This was so interesting Liz. Thank you for being so open about monetising and how much you earn etc. Your videos are a joy and looking forward to more in 2024. I love those gannets in the background 🤔. I am slightly over 60 and live in Scotland 😂
Thank you so much! I love gannets too - that dance they do as they clack their beaks!!
Congratulations on your achievement! Thank you for your transparency. I know that this is a long and hard game/work to do!
Yes, it is not a get rich quick scheme for sure!!
Liz, I found every single thing in this revelatory video very interesting. Thank you for explaining the basics. I really hadn’t thought about compensation so I had no guesses about what the creators I watch are able to earn. Merry Christmas, and I hope you keep on making your informative and cheerful videos!
I will! and merry Christmas to you too
I think that you have pulled back the curtain like Toto did in the Wizard of Oz. I just subscribed because I have a love tutorials on watercolor and drawing-especially when taught well. Thanks
I love the Wizard of Oz! but mostly the witch ‘fly my pretties’
Thanks for the transparency on how YT works for you. I bet this one really zooms up the stats. People are curious. I understand how older vids can jump up in stats. I find someone new (like you) and I will binge watch ALL I can find by that Channel. On art & crafts sites, I will watch some over & over, like when I want to do that project. I do comment more often now & even watch some of the ads for my favorites because I know between those & the likes, it helps them out $$ wise. It also helps pull the old vids back to the forefront. Do I want to do it? Nope! I feel I'm good at what I do but don't feel a weekly video would suit me. I commend you & others for their dedication & sharing your talents.
It’s not for everyone, for sure. And your support makes a big difference
Congratulations! Thanks for sharing this video. And I enjoy your watercolor videos and always can learn something from you. Keep up the good work! Trust your goals of next milestone will be realized in the near future!
Thank you so much! It would be great to get to 50,000. I do like a round number
What a fantastic insight into TH-cam, thank you for sharing this. I saw this video because it came up in my recommended page. I will now watch more of your videos as I love watercolour but haven’t done very much. Pam, from Australia 😊
Welcome! this channel is about watercolour, but this one (utterly unrelated) film seems to have gone crazy
Thanks for the fantastic in formation breakdown! I was actually really curious of how TH-cam honestly worked for content creators.
There's so much info in all the analytics, that it can be overwhelming, so I hope I cut to the chase!!
I think that's a decent amount of money :o As you say, it takes a lot of time to plan, make and edit the videos, but for a few extra hundred a month it might be worth it (especially if you get appreciation from the viewers for what you make) :)
I really like the community here. The money keeps me in art supplies!
Great video Liz!!! I too should have started TH-cam years ago. Time commitment and especially the technical editing and stuff continue to keep me from jumping in however. So the honesty about your journey is much appreciated. Thank you!
The techical stuff can be intimidating, but most phones will do enough editing….
That was fabulous!!! Love watching your whimsical works and interesting non-traditional ideas. Laying this info out to us was lovely and very telling. I appreciate you!!!! Keep up the great work!
Glad you found it interesting. I wasn’t sure when I made it. I have lots of ideas lined up for the new year.
Congratulations 🎊🎈! I have really enjoyed watching your channel & learning so much about painting & creating art! I am surprised by how much everyone is doing & making on TH-cam. I’m like you just making videos for the fun of it & to see how far I will grow as an artist. (Just starting 😉💕). Thanks for sharing this wonderful tidbit of information! Have a wonderful Happy Christmas 🎄 & a Joyous Prosperous 2024 New Year!
Thank you and good luck with your art journey
@@LizChadertonArt Thank you 😊
Liz, thank you for sharing your thoughts about youtube channel. It is not much you're making, but I'm glad you're making some. I feel youtube is one of those tests of character, a real test of resilience, hard work, putting on countless hours for a very small pay, but the satisfaction of connecting with an audience and sharing our work is what makes it worthwhile
You have put that so well. I am getting enough to make it worth the time, but not enough to make it a rational business decision! I like it for the community and satisfaction
I just love your energy and this video was quite informative. I dont paint but was considering starting a new channel. Thank you for sharing this gem. x
good luck with the new channel
Thank you for the tour behind the curtain in Oz. Wonderful! Thank you for the info and joy you bring throughout the year. Happy holidays!
Happy holidays too and I rather like the idea of being the Wizard of Oz!
Oh Gad...so glad to see this. I will NEVER bother trying to do this! I love that you do this! I must say though that I have joined 2 urban sketcher groups and I love it. It's a way to do my art with just Fun in mind instead of hoping to sell anything. I would love to see more on this and perspective. I cannot for the love of all that is holy make perspective work for me. I see it on videos and can't translate it to my own art. I wish you earned more because you are Worth it!
Great comment. You made me smile. I love urban sketching. I plan to do more this year. Will try to help on perspective.
Thankyou for that Liz, it was very interesting,to be honest I didnt have a clue how it worked, it's not fortunes and you are worth more. I learn a lot from your videos and enjoy them immensely Thankyou
I’m glad you enjoy them, and hopefully this will grow with time 😊@@christinerolf9348

Cannot paint to save my life but I enjoyed this talk. Hope my one like makes a difference. 🎉🎉

Thank you so much and welcome. I am so pleased this film (which I nearly didn't bother to make) has shown my channel to new folk.
A very interesting video on the mechanics of TH-cam so thank you for being so transparent Liz.
