Can't believe this is live. The album version is a joke compared to this masterpiece. One of the most powerful and finely crafted songs I've ever heard in 34 years of music listening. Wish I was there to see it.
@@speabody I totally agree. The album version is the masterpiece and this one is a nice live version. To describe the album version as a joke is another joke. But that joke isn't funny anymore!
D.P.O.was my favorite episode of the X-Files growing up because of the tribute to video arcades/Fighting games/VF series and the great 90's music. Seems like it was yesterday....makes me really sad at times. My father was alive my friends were alive and all the memories of the video arcades and high school. Wish I could go back in time...things were really exciting and nice then.
Yeah it was a seminal moment. The older dudes all talk about JFK getting shot....this was one of those moments for me. Like there was this excitement of change mixed in with this horror of the unknown, is it weird that imagined reality gave me the feeling that we were going to smash this fake ass reality?
@Q Machado:’obrigado bruh. That was really well put. Perfect summation of what some call “the Oregon Trail” generation. We had it all, Lincoln Logs and. Apple 2 e computers (one per classroom if lucky). Hell, we had duck and cover drills to “know how to survive a nuclear bomb”. If you are in the older spectrum of gen y you knew it was bullshit cuz you knew if you could see the flash you’re done anyway. If you’re, like me, on the younger side of the gen y road, (born in 82, while millennials begin with 84 babies and on ttbomk) you have vague memories of the 88 election and maybe the Wall coming down. Great time to have been alive.
Cheryl Cox the show House had a lot of good songs too, slower often bluesie grooves. I just found this song - had never heard it but I'm watching xfiles (missed most of it due to a busy life) and trying to rem some words to google when this song had jiggled my attention! as so many on xfiles do. It's a good song.
well well Mr Bungle, it s only too bad that Mike Patton does not guest in the x files, he would have been awesome, but he have one of the main role on a very strange movie call Firecracker . you should take a look before your Ass get on Fire !
One of my favourite songs of all time. This version absolutely destroys the other album/retail version. Won't hear anything else like it every again I reckon.
When you let me fall Grew my own wings Now I'm as tall as the sky When you let me drown Grew gills and fins Now I'm as deep as the sea When you let me die My spirit's free There's nothing challenging me
Feeling slightly smug, because they did this acoustic version in a concert on broadcast on Radio 1. I taped the whole concert. Years later I got it transferred to mp3, so have the whole concert on my iTunes. They originally did the acoustic set supporting Leonard Cohen in the US. It was when they first did an accordion version of Sit Down, introducing it as "an old English folk song". Bloody brilliant. I'm going to listen to it now.
This is absolutely incredible! I don't suppose you could share this? I would absolutely love to hear the accordion version of sit down! I'm just starting to learn the accordion now, and would love hearing it
I was watching "X-Files" tonight and realized I hadn't heard this song in nearly 20 years. I had this album when I was in college, and I used to listen to this song over and over. When the song came on, I freaked out (in a good way). Thank you so much for posting this.
I bought this album in cassette form as a young teenager and immediately gravitated towards this beautiful song. Years later when I heard it on my favourite TV show I cried. Now that is powerful music.
James will sometimes play live different versions, far from the original song. This one is a brilliant version, truly a hidden gem. They also did some different versions once at a concert in my hometown, I wish I had recorded it! :P
Did a rewatch of the X-files in the summer of 2008, heard this song version on one of the episodes and could not find it on youtube. Till a few days later this legend uploaded this version, I mean what are the odds. So every now and then ill check this. Still grateful to the uploader all these years later. Cheers mate.
Yup, I did a rewatch of The X-Files, MillienniuM and The Lone Gunmen in 2013-2014, my search was a tad easier. But damn what a flashback to weekends of my childhood in the late 90s/early 2000’s. I got really into the X-Files when I was 6 years old and DPO was one of the first episodes I saw as a kid.
Ring ring the bells Wake the town Everyone is sleeping Shout at the crowd Wake them up This anger's deeper than sleep Got to keep awake to what is happening I can't see a thing through my ambition, I no longer feel my God is watching over me Got to tell the world we've all been dreaming This is not the end, a new beginning I no longer feel my God is watching over me Break break the code Concentrate Let the doors swing open See through all your walls All your floors Now you're in deeper than sleep Got to keep awake to what is happening I can't see a thing through my ambition, I no longer feel my God is watching over me Got to tell the world we've all been dreaming This is not the end, a new beginning I no longer feel my God is watching over me When you let me fall Grew my own wings Now I'm as tall as the sky When you let me drown Grew gills and fins Now I'm as deep as the sea When you let me die My spirit's free There's nothing challenging me
I was a teenager in the 90s and X-Files was probably my favorite show. DPO hit close to home for me, though; one of my best friends at the time was pretty much Giovanni Ribisi's character that it made that episode insanely relateable. 20 years later as adults, he told me to look up this song and asked me if I remember that episode. Of course I do, man, of course I do.
I've been on the face of this earth for over 30 years now.... This is the only song that makes me cry every time... RIP to all the forgotten friends. The strong yet always sad ones. The abused mentally and physically. The ones that would listen to this to hopefully someone could understand the pain and passion we go through on a daily basis... I love you all...
X-Files was one of the most innovative and influential shows ever. Personally, I believe it's one of the best shows of all time. I don't care that it fell apart in the last 2 seasons, everything was relevant and I loved every bit of it.
I prefer this version over the one that ended up on their Seven album. I first heard this in that aforementioned X-Files episode but when I heard the studio version I was gutted. This version is much nicer.
James last, and this is an example of why. The live version is different and often brilliant every time. Go and see them live if you ever get the chance.
Heard this song for the first time last week while re-watching the X-Files and now I can't stop thinking about it. I'm just listening to it over and over again... where has this song been all of my life?
The start of this song is like a lullaby. Then suddenly it's full of life, energy, action. I love it 💖🔥 plus it's in one of my favourite X Files episodes 😁⚡
I hadn't heard this until the last year or two. Ordered the CD from eBay since it's not available to stream. Now I'm finding out that it's the same band as another favorite song of mine: Laid! They really should have picked a more distinguishable name for the band. 😂
When the X Files episode D.P.O. first aired in the 90's, I fell for this song. It took me a while to find it in it's true form, but when I did, I played it every day! I'm still playing it. The X Files gave us some great music.
Binging the xfiles during corona lock down brought me here. When I was a kid I always thought filters hey man nice shot was the coolest part of dpo but hearing this as an adult is so much more enlightening. Thank you to the person that posted this. Also thank you to the geniuses behind the song.
YOu know that episode of x-files has always been one of my favorites. I finally, thank you google search, found out the name of this song. That opening scene is one of the most haunting scences in all of television. I wanna go back to 1995 - when my life was less complicated. x-files, music, a bit of booze, some university.
i think the episode D.P.O is the perfect vision of what the 90's were about, the backround, the music, the dress, the young ones, the destructive spirit of that time...AWESOME
I bought the CD that this song is on, and Love this version of the song. I have since lost the CD, but finally I found this version. So Great, Thanks for posting it
beautiful, just beautiful, i'm 24 years old and i got into james because of that famous x-files episode, i was looking for this song for years man, thank you.
I've been revisiting my youth and watching The X-Files again, and came across this song ... thank you for posting this version, which I strongly prefer to the studio version!
I remember listening to this in the early nighties on Seven, then watching xfiles episode DPO and remembering how good it was. Nearly 30 years later and I still absolutely love it... a true timeless classic
Thanks so much for posting this in the context of the X-Files episode. I was watching DPO just a few minutes ago and noticed the strumming was different in the episode than the James track I've always heard. Took a few minutes but I was able to track the X-Files' version down to right here. Thanks!
I love how many people are here because of X-Files, D.P.O. : D
+kelsey baker
I watched this episode last night and fell in love with this song. Unfortunately, today's hard to find such good music...
It's pretty much the only reason to be here. I want to believe.
I'm re-watching the entire show. Just finished D.P.O and I had to come here and listen to this song again...
2018. Been binge watching.
what's D.P.O.?
Watching this in 2024
watching you watch this in 2024
watching you guys comment in 2024
Joining you all listening to this awesome tune in 2024 🙌
This song was used so effectively in the X-Files, The intro to D.P.O is one of the best moments of the entire show IMO.
closure s7e11 Moby's "my weakness" during field scene is probably best musical scene in the show.
How cool Jack Black.😮😂
Yes 100% agree
I literally still think about that sequence with this version of the song til this day.
Can't believe this is live. The album version is a joke compared to this masterpiece. One of the most powerful and finely crafted songs I've ever heard in 34 years of music listening. Wish I was there to see it.
Neil, I agree 100% I've had this album since the early 90's and enjoyed it since then.
You need to watch james live , they are the best live band going .
I will make sure they play this next time hopefully Glastonbury 👊🏼
A joke? Lol this is "prettier", that's it. The album version other has force and life. I feel "as tall as the sky" with the energy of that one.
@@speabody I totally agree. The album version is the masterpiece and this one is a nice live version. To describe the album version as a joke is another joke. But that joke isn't funny anymore!
the best intro for a x-files episode..
The X-files is probably one of the best shows ever made. Re-watching with my husband... ah! The memories! GREAT SONG!
Is the best show
There will never be chemistry like Maulder and Scully ever again.
Scully was so sexy. 😂❤
D.P.O. "x files (s3)"
Watched it as a kid, now grown up it's such a grasp!! So new again!...
Q Machado You're so right. X-files was my childhood too. Mulder and scully were my heroes. I was crying when i heared that they are coming back...
+Q Machado Amen to that. Seeing that intro when originally broadcast just knocked me out, it floored me. I'll never forget that intro.
Yes! Very good times!!!
Yeah it was a seminal moment. The older dudes all talk about JFK getting shot....this was one of those moments for me. Like there was this excitement of change mixed in with this horror of the unknown, is it weird that imagined reality gave me the feeling that we were going to smash this fake ass reality?

I had this cd a hundred years ago and loved this song! Lost cd and couldn’t remember the name of the song. Just found it today! Holy shit!!
One of the best feelings ever😂
My X-Files rewatch has turned me on to some great music that I missed the first time around, this song included
Cheryl Cox right there with ya
Cheryl Cox the show House had a lot of good songs too, slower often bluesie grooves. I just found this song - had never heard it but I'm watching xfiles (missed most of it due to a busy life) and trying to rem some words to google when this song had jiggled my attention! as so many on xfiles do. You and me both.
Breaking Bad does the same.
Watch it again 5 years later x files is awesome 😂
Why is this version not on any of the James albums?..
Best version ever..
Also X Files rocked with this..
Dpo seadon 3 episode 3
Its funny, have this CD for the Sonic Youth, then went looking for this version because of X files not realizing I already had it.. haha
Thumbs down by 7 people? I bet Mrs. Kiveat was one of them
jjman9 And another was Mulder, because D.P.O. burned his cellphone.
@jjman9, LMBO, that is the best reply ever!
There’s 39 of um now , and they can all go fuck themselves
Or her husband
Lol
Thank you X Files .
well well Mr Bungle, it s only too bad that Mike Patton does not guest in the x files, he would have been awesome, but he have one of the main role on a very strange movie call Firecracker . you should take a look before your Ass get on Fire !
+luc de Villars Thanks!
"Is it my turn now?"
Christ, I first saw this episode at 14 and I just loved it.
TalkingApeMan I remember that like it was yesterday. “It is my turn now?” Ahhh memories.
Bullies GET THEIRS in the end 🤣🤣
This song made DPO's cold open so much more atmospheric.
Atmospheric! For D.P.O.? I see what you did there!
Brings me back to the early episodes of the x files
I'm here because the the YT algorithm keeps throwing awesome stuff my way.
X-files 😍🖤🔥
Simply the most beautiful version of this song
Once you have James in your genes it never leaves
One of my favourite songs of all time. This version absolutely destroys the other album/retail version. Won't hear anything else like it every again I reckon.
Agree with you on all points
Thank you X-Files for making me discover good music when I was a child :)
Came back to say - still one of the best openings to a t.v. episode. I'm currently rewatching the X-Files and tonight is DPO.
When you let me fall
Grew my own wings
Now I'm as tall as the sky
When you let me drown
Grew gills and fins
Now I'm as deep as the sea
When you let me die
My spirit's free
There's nothing challenging me
A bolt of lightening brought me here

haha,, that's why IM here tonight........X-Files, and memories............
*****
Me Too! Watching old X files on Netflix. A very young David Duchovny, Giovanni Rubisi and Jack Black.
I also came here because of the X-files, also watching them on Netflix. By the way, this Friday I start working for Netflix, I'm so excited!
This song is just pure joy for me. Nice to see it is for others too
I bought this album in cassette form as a young teenager and immediately gravitated towards this beautiful song. Years later when I heard it on my favourite TV show I cried. Now that is powerful music.
D.P.O!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RING THEM BELLS! 💋
After "Wonderful Wonderful" this is probably the best X-Files song.
...and then there's 'Twilight Time' from 'Kill Switch'
im here not for D.P.O. , im here for James
James will sometimes play live different versions, far from the original song. This one is a brilliant version, truly a hidden gem. They also did some different versions once at a concert in my hometown, I wish I had recorded it! :P

I continuously listen to this after x files, I love the outro when the song gets faster, and the singers voice is echoing EPIC
Ring ring the bells
Wake the town
Everyone is sleeping
Shout at the crowd
Wake them up
This anger's deeper than sleep
Got to keep awake to what is happening
I can't see a thing through my ambition,
I no longer feel my God is watching over me
Got to tell the world we've all been dreaming
This is not the end, a new beginning
I no longer feel my God is watching over me
Break break the code
Concentrate
Let the doors swing open
See through all your walls
All your floors
Now you're in deeper than sleep
Got to keep awake to what is happening
I can't see a thing through my ambition,
I no longer feel my God is watching over me
Got to tell the world we've all been dreaming
This is not the end, a new beginning
I no longer feel my God is watching over me
When you let me fall
Grew my own wings
Now I'm as tall as the sky
When you let me drown
Grew gills and fins
Now I'm as deep as the sea
When you let me die
My spirit's free
There's nothing challenging me
@logicalempiricist2 I think it’s more about revolution, whether against religion or oppressive regimes. Still relevant.
I was a teenager in the 90s and X-Files was probably my favorite show. "I feel a new record coming on man"
I had all 9 seasons of X-Files and I remember watching the intro to this episode so many times because I love this song
Same here! 🤘👽
Best version ever!
I've been on the face of this earth for over 30 years now.... This is the only song that makes me cry every time... RIP to all the forgotten friends. The strong yet always sad ones. The music of James and Tim Booth touches your soul.
Sunday re-run of the timeless classic "The X Files - D.P.O" brought me here. Welcome to 2019!
Greatest 90s show.
80s were bad ass.....the 90s ruled!
X files
And a much more laid back upbringing. I had the world by its balls!
X-Files was one of the most innovative and influential shows ever. Personally, I believe it's one of the best shows of all time. I don't care that it fell apart in the last 2 seasons, everything was relevant and I loved every bit of it.
Thank you X files, this song has been stuck in my head for 2 days now ;-)
It's been six solid months for me. And I don't have a single complaint about that.
I have been looking for this for so effing long!!!! Like YEARs!!!!
So happy you finally found it!
Wow...close your eyes and play it loud,it´s fantastic!
It's definitely one of those songs you can do exactly that and lose yourself in it. 🙌❤️
aww man you shouldn't have done that
the use of this song on the intro the DPO literally gave me chills down my spine.
good song, amazing show, well done
The whole album kicks ass. This is why I love going through my dad's CD collection.
Lucky you! My kids haven't found this yet. And they won't find it on Spotify. Ha
Best Xfiles episode ever - D.P.O Series 3 Episode 3 - Giovanni Ribisi, Jack Black, James Ring the bells, a whole mix of awesomeness.
D.P.O. One of the greatest episodes of the X Files.
I prefer this version over the one that ended up on their Seven album. I first heard this in that aforementioned X-Files episode but when I heard the studio version I was gutted. This version is much nicer.
I come back to this video at least once a week, I wish this version was on Pandora, I would put it on repeat for hours
god the end of this song is amazing!
Yep, the drums competing with the keyboard, brilliant.
Thank you x files! Would have never came across this song!
So, is it my turn now?
James last, and this is an example of why. The live version is different and often brilliant every time. Go and see them live if you ever get the chance.
One of the Greatest Bands ever
I can feel a new record coming on man
Heard this song for the first time last week while re-watching the X-Files and now I can't stop thinking about it. I'm just listening to it over and over again... where has this song been all of my life?
The start of this song is like a lullaby. Then suddenly it's full of life, energy, action. I love it 💖🔥 plus it's in one of my favourite X Files episodes 😁⚡
Love this version. Just amazing.
This is one of the finest songs I have ever heard.

Thank you, darjanator, for the upload.
Had to watch D.P.O. again love this song

I thought I was the only person looking up the music from DPO, XFiles! Haha so glad to see you here!
thank you x files for this song !
YOu know that episode of x-files has always been one of my favorites. I finally, thank you google search, found out the name of this song. That opening scene is one of the most haunting scences in all of television. I wanna go back to 1995 - when my life was less complicated. x-files, music, a bit of booze, some university.
Amazing. Love X-Files, and this song.
I love the build up to the end of this song. Knowing that D.P.O. is about to unleash a Lightning Strike!
X files me fez vir aqui
i think the episode D.P.O is the perfect vision of what the 90's were about, the backround, the music, the dress, the young ones, the destructive spirit of that time...AWESOME
D.P.O brought me here
This was my very first cd given to me, and it’s my favorite of all time. I just pulled it out after years hidden in a box. Brings back memories.

The words to this song are amazing. For me...it is James' best song.
I like getting away with it, but this has a similar chord progression 😚
I've been revisiting my youth and watching The X-Files again, and came across this song ... thank you for posting this version, which I strongly prefer to the studio version!
Man... his voice.... so truly unique. A beautiful song and a helluva rendition ❤️🙌

Soo glad to find this version of the song. Thx!
Thanks!
X files D.P.O my favourite episode season 3 episode 3. Was really beginning to take off at this point
