Felling trees into a river - sounds a lot like beaver activity. Save your state a couple of dollars by reintroducing beaver, while placing a temporary moratorium on beaver trapping. Your aquifer will thank you, as will your bat population.

This. If you look at any freshwater wetland ecosystem in North America, the "what is wrong with it" almost always comes down to the beavers are gone.
