As soon as I've seen the title I immediately thought about Babette, one of the most magical, heartwarming, and spirit lifting movie moments of my entire life. Thank you Cinefix for bringing that back to my memory.
At number 2 I was thinking that they would not mention it since it's old and not very people seem to know it. I'm overjoyed. It's the most deserving film in that spot. That dinner is transcendent.
I still believe Landa remembered who Shoshanna is in that scene. The twist is that Landa allready does not care at that point. He is allready creating possibilities for him to get an out of jail free card.
I don't. He never got a good look at her. He didn't even know of the plan until finding some small info in the basement, well after meeting with Shosanna. Landa seems like he always wants to put people on edge. I.e. he tests everyone he meets. Which, as an interrogator, comes with the job. He only wanted info on the theater, so that's all he was looking for. And maybe testing her if she was a jew, just not a specific jew he only saw from behind over a field.
@@BingFox I see your point, but some details are beyond that, I think. Like, why would Landa leave most of the struddel he praised so much; not only that, he rudely puts off his cigarrete onto the strudel. I mean, he's a dick, but he is also polite, and that wasn't polite at all. And the milk!? Who the hell orders milk, both as a serious order or as a way to put someone on the edge? It only makes sense if he know that milk is important there.
CineFix doesn't seem to think much of animation. Or at least they very rarely mention it at all. I'm frankly somewhat amazed that Ratatouille was given a nod.
I was shocked that ghibli movies didn't make the cut here, I feel like theres a category itself of animated meals that are so delicious you wanted it to be real.
my god i was waiting to see Babette's Feast from minute 1, i love this movie, i absolutely recommend it to everyone!! There is so much care in the shots, in the dialogs, the table positions and everything, it is just amazing.
With me the best meal scene would have to be in Ratatouille when Anton Ego eats the ratatouille since it shows how powerful food can be when it comes to nostalgia, since it's probably the same feeling for most people when eating something from childhood.
Most satisfying meal was in Harold & Kumar: Go to White Castle. A film about doped up boys just wanting to Castle Burgers. In the end, they succeed and it's so satisfying seeing themselves finally fill their bellies with what they wanted most.
Babette's feast came out the year I was born, and thanks to this video went and watched it, and I loved it, so I went and read the book... and it captured my heart. Really, such a simple yet beautiful heartwarming story!
Babish actually made Pollo a la Plancha from Moonlight and I made it once. If you don't make anything else, make the beans from his recipe..omg, AMAZING flavor: th-cam.com/video/ZsBWgeQHjnM/w-d-xo.html
One of my favorite food/meal scenes is "Be Our Guest" in Beauty in the Beast. Such sumptuousness and wonderful choreography! On the opposite end, there's the scene where Oliver Twist asks for more gruel in the musical "Oliver!". The fact that anyone would want another serving of whatever tasteless food they serve at his orphanage is a testament to how pitifully they treat the kids there.
First meals I thought of were the “steak of betrayal” in Matrix and, without really being a meal scene, the kahuna burger in Pulp Fiction. Pretty basic, but memorable.
Or how about on Tartakovsky's clone wars when they're on a siege and anakin starts eating some sort of worms or insects and obi wan is disgusted and then anakin reveals a tunnel map were they could get inside the city they were attacking, that moment it's actually pretty good for me it always gets me
My heart was in my throat as you counted down to 2 and hadn't mentioned Babette's Feast. Was it too obscure? Too old? Too quiet? And then, you said it. Yes, Yes, Yes! I saw that movie 38 years ago and it burned into my brain. Thank you for honoring this amazing, beautiful, powerful story of grace! I apologize for not trusting you. I should have known you would come through.
I love that awkward moment in 'The Joy Luck Club' where the caucasian boyfriend pours Soy Sauce onto the main platter to try to 'save' the meal his mother-in-law has toiled over for many hours. My wife and I quote that scene often.
If I was to add a meal in this list that would be Pan's Labyrinth, a meal that is not supposed to be eaten, and then Ofelia does and shit hits the fan.
The word meal can refer to both the food itself, and the occasion of eating a (somewhat large) amount of food. I would in fact say that the latter is a more common use of the word.

The breakfast scene from Howls Moving castle or the parent's stolen feast from Spirited away. Not by any other particular reason except I always get hungry when watching them :)
Thank you, thank you, thank you for making Babette's Feast #1. I first saw this movie when I was in college three decades ago, and it's still one of my favorite foodie movies. The sole rival in my mind was from Big Night in 1996.
If only TV shows could be included; Fleabag's meal from the premier of season 2 is one for the ages. It strikes a million perfect little notes from delightful cringe and awkwardness, aching pathos and regret, outright slapstick hilarity, and of course a meet-cute with a hot priest.
My first thought was "Babbette's Feast has to be #1. I like the Wonder Boys diner scene, and how on the accompanying music video ("Things Have Changed") how Bob Dylan gets inserted into it.
The Pianist: the scene where he eats the jelly, and it looks like the best thing he's ever eaten in his life. The Prince of Tides: After being brutally attacked in their home, the family cleans up the mess and buries the bodies of the assailants before the father gets home and have dinner as if nothing has happened. But the sister's dress is on inside out.
Can I make an argument for the spaghetti breakfast in "A Woman Under the Influence," which I did not see a single frame of in this whole video. Should definitely be on this list.
I can’t see a movie meal list without thinking of Twister. Not only does the food look delicious, but it’s literally the calm before the storm. It’s then finding comfort in disaster. Great scene.
I made the meal from 'Moonlight', courtesy of Binging with Babish, and it is one of the best meals I ever made. The black beans sauteed in bacon lardons and onion is one side dish I will definitely recommend.
Most memorable meals in a movie: Temple of Doom, Signs, Hook, Lady and the Tramp, Chef, Close Encounters, Alien, Animal House, Christmas Story, and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
CINEFIX damn, every list is better than the last. Like how the f*** can y'all make a list about meals in movies so fascinating? After all these years y'all are still crushing it. (tbh would love to see the bracket come back if not just for one more series)
After watching it last year, I’d have to say one of the best food movies I’ve seen is Pig. The final meal alone is packed full of emotion and the overall critique of fine dining is superb. Nic Cage is utterly mesmerising in his role
When talking about family and friends and the camaraderie of shared meals, one of my favorites is all the restaurant scenes from Return to Me. The mix of Irish and Italian family and friends (Carroll O'Connor, Robert Loggia, etc.) is quite charming. These characters really do love each other and it shows, even in their good natured teasing of each other.
I realize this was a feel-good list, but it seems like there should have been one spot for horror dinners. Which would have been a much better place to bring up Hannibal. (Although my pick for the winner would be Texas Chainsaw Massacre.)
I am not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but it hard to talk about this topic with out at least giving a shout out to the feast in Indiana Jones and the temple of doom.
Have I seen this episode and commented on it before? Perhaps. Still, my insides knotted with apprehension that you would overlook Babette's Feast! Thank you for getting it oh so right.
