Thanks for making this video. I am so tired of people ragging on Behringer criticizing it as if the gear by behringer is suppose to sound as good as Neve, SSL, API, or any other top company. Behringer makes gear that is for the entry level or mid level studio that may need a piece of gear that can help enhance the sound over not having any gear at all until they can afford pricier class A gear. In a lot of cases, the behringer gear will serve a great purpose to what they need the gear to do. The same A-holes also have something negative to say about Alesis 3630 compressors, some Presonus gear, ART and other affordable price gear. Those A-holes are not helping me buy API, Neve, SSL, Focal, Neumann, or any of those other high price gear companies so I don't pay them any attention, Especially when the results are coming out good.

This is old school like me as I'm still recording on a 16 track hard drive with outboard effects. I've had the T1953 for 15 years and recently decided to replace the preamp tubes with JJ Electronic. Finally a review that explains and demonstrates that the unit really does something although it is subtle. When these units first came out, there was severe criticism and skepticism that they did nothing. I don't know what recording engineers were listening to, put I could tell right away that something was happening. Just running a signal through a unit that produces heat (even if the back lamps contribute a bit) is going to have some effect - just like an all tube guitar amp. I love how Vatche explains why Behringer put lamps behind the preamp tubes. This is a common design for units because preamp tubes hardly glow and it looks cool to see the tubes in the unit. He also does a great job with the testing equipment. It's a shame they stop making these units - I have the same gripe with the Marshall Valvestate amps. The manufactures designs and commissions a factory to make 'X' amount and when that batch is through, it's really hard for the company to start another run unless the model is a great seller. Parts and prices vary which can effect reproducing the exact same design. You can still fine some used T1953 and other Behringer Vintager series processors around. Despite claims the Behringer is a 'cheap' product, I'm still using their products from years ago. They hold up well. The low cost comes from the fact that Behringer sells their products all around the world - tons of sales which keeps prices down. I run all my mixes through it to warm up the sometimes digital harshness. After the T1953 the mixes go to a Behringer Ultraflex Pro (expander/dynamics) and then through a Behringer Denoiser (works great and is fast). My mixes sound alive with a warm tight bottom end. I'm not some high end recording studio and I'm glad these units are affordable and effective. After all, it's not the amount or quality of the gear, it's how you use it. Replacement lamps are easy to get and I recommend a whole batch. One of the VU meter lights died in my unit and I replaced all 4 VU lights with LEDs. Two green for the input gains and two red for the warmers - looks awesome! This is one of the best looking processors ever.
I got this preamp back in the early 2000s when I was first starting out…the bulbs burned out after about a year and I never replaced em. Believe it or not, the tubes, after being on for a while, do have a slight glow from them. I actually got some pretty good recordings out of this preamp!
I've had one for almost a decade now and I think it works fine. As you said, it's not a $5,000 tube pre-amp. I like it for vocals believe it or not. I like a bit of dirt on my vocal sound and it does this perfectly. If I want clean, I can get that too.

I have the same unit for more than 15 years, and i have order 2 new tubes (Mullard) to change them cause one is completly dead and the other is not so healthly (in the manual they recommand to change them every 4 or 5 years) ! I use the ultragain for mics only i never use it for a final mix. Thanks to share your knowledge about it !
Thanks great video + demo! I currently have a T1952 hooked up to a UB2442FX PRO Mixer (single channel only) and I'm lookin' to buy a T1953 to brighten up my M-Audio Pro channel on the UB2442FX PRO. I'm being a bit critical on the M-Audio Pro it sounds ok but I think it's got potential rather than upgrade!
It can give a bit of excitement in the mid-high frequencies and make a dull mic brighter without being harsh. I mostly use them with my dynamic mics or overall "exciter" for my mix bus.
Exactly. Most people don't take the time to read the manual. I own and use all of the Behringer Vintager pieces. My favorite of the group is the Ultrafex on a master insert.

One thing I learned from your video that this model will not give me what I'm looking for sonically speaking STILL, I'm intrested in getting it anyways. I just found a used unit on the net for 160 USD. I'm learning to record at home and looking to buy my first mic/pre ever. I think I can understand concepts like "air", "noise/floor", "warmth", "glue" etc, since I been playing guitar and bass for the last 30 years, yet the pro/sound world is something new to me. I wonder how this Behringer compares to an Art Pro MPA II. Have you had the chance to AB both? Art's mic pre, claims to run the tube at optimal voltage (it even has a hot-plate function which claims to get the tube even warmer) and I wonder if that would make a great difference sonically or not. What do you think? BTW, congratulations on the first song on the review. Beautifuly composed intro. Double/bass and snare sound great. And that over youtube! hats off Sir
This preamp was the first I ever bought, and I never had any issues with it -- nowhere near as much as I did when I later discovered that I also bought a used Oktava mic at Guitar Center had been modified by Michael Joly to be an omnidirectional mic(!), but as a newbie, I didn't know that at first! But my bass, synth and guitar tracks always sounded decent. I still have this in my rack, but hardly ever use it now after getting a Focusrite ISA One and others, but also because the stupid lights in the meters died. I did do a bass track recently and it still sounded pretty good! Have you had to replace the lights or meters? And do you think I should replace the tubes in it? Thanks for this video. I think people just slam the Behringer name without even trying to use their stuff. I will say that Behringer has had issues with quality control. I bought the same monitor controller from them twice (new), and the talkback mic didn't work, and buttons didn't engage properly, so some of that angst might be justified.
Thanks for the comment. I still have mine, but not used at the moment. I never had issues with it, even purchasing it used unit. Original valves and meters. Behringer though not the highest quality, but you get what you pay for. They do the job.
You should have used sine for the harmonic analysis, that way you can see the additional harmonics added by the valve output stage, also 440 isn't middle C, it's A.. ;-)

5:27 , 5:50 and 13:24 The most important and biggest your misunderstanding in this video is "parallel". It doesn't actually and both two tubes are arranged/inserted in series in both audio circuits that channel #1 and channel #2. Read the schematic carefully again.
You are correct at the technical level. I was simplifying it to make it easy for viewers to understand the role of the tubes, that they are not Tube Mic Preamp as such, but the tubes simply add harmonic saturation, and as per Behringer User Manual (Page 10) The Warmth dial 'adds' tube warmth. But thank you for clarifying it for everyone else.
People have to recognize that if your recording and mixing skills suck no gear can save you. Once you understand how gear work and understand it's sweet spot and limitations then you can get a good sound from it
A better comparison would be a live tracking of guitar with tube on n off in real time. Recordings sound like u recorded them with the saturation so their was no change. Do a live recording comparison.

I guess DeathValleyWarthog who commented on the Behringer T1953 in your video is a guy that believes a multi-million-dollar Neve mixing console is needed to make hit records...LOL I've had it with the self-acclaimed professionals. You can recognize them fast by the bullshit they talk. It doesn't matter what you use. It's the result that counts. I know a well respected hi-skilled multi-hit record producer and studiotech (was also my teacher) that even uses crappy cassette-recorders to get a certain compression and sound on drums... He's so skilled and ear-trained that he makes any (!) live PA system sound acceptable...even when it's not line array but point source system that is 40 years old...
Behringer is fantastic. However, many who buy Behringer products are idiots and do not know what they are buying. Saw one who compared a Behringer compressor with an LA2A plugin and was disappointed it didn't sound the same
It would be like comparing Toyota to a BMW and expecting same speed and comfort. But, both will take you to the same A to B if you know how to drive :)

erm? im not seeing any change in the spectrum. I'm sorry, maybe this isn't a very good demo. I saw no real change in the spectrum when the unit is in the signal path and when bypassed. Maybe it's just me.

Glad to know. Like with any Tube amp, best to have them on 30 min before using. Great to add a bit of analog imbalance on the way in.

If you replace the 12AX7 tubes with ECC83 tubes it sounds warmer. I used one for 4 years is in a club for add warmth to the mains

How does this compare to their MIC2200? They just released a V2 Mic2200 and not one review online!

The saturation is very subtle with this mic pre, justvto add a touch on the way in.

That is correct. You can use this hardware to add shrill and brightness to a mix without harshness.
