  • Ling Heather 3 Weeks Later
    In this video I give you update on how colonies are managing after being on the heather moorland for 3 weeks.
    They are piling the honey in and loving the stormy nights and warm days.

      Thank you. Ill do a harvest video to show what a pain it is to extract!

    Awesome! Thanks for the video and thanks for taking the time to show the heather, been looking forward to your follow-up. Looks like you caught it just right, nothing more satisfying than the sight & sound of bees on a heavy flow. The beautiful countryside is icing on the cake! Hope you get so much honey you have to hire a truck to get it all home.

      Cheers T Clem! Glad you enjoyed it and hopefully it continues to yield. Next two weeks are looking dire though :(

      Really happy with the crop. Avg 25lb per hive! :)

    My goodness you just got your hives off the moors before the bad storm has hit you across Wales.
    Wishing your family & bees are ok. 🍀

      I took them off the day before you messaged and so glad I did. They would have gone backwards this week and most frames were capped. Now feeding and treating for mites

      I watch you say in your video that the moors are not a place to be in bad weather and you were right. Great when a plan comes together. I live in the New Forest National Park , Hampshire. It’s been either good or bad for many. Depending on the area they applied for to place their hives as it’s very a variable and wide landscape. Iam lucky as I live near the heather. Well that’s if they don’t get side tracked on the way. Lol.

    I think everything flower related is moving somewhat for instance bluebells used to be out in May and now theyre out at the beginning of April if not earlier, I put some of my bees on a small patch of heather about 3 weeks ago actually waiting for the fireweed around it but there looks to be enough heather to do the bees some good too.
    Pleased you are getting a good crop so far.

      There is certainly noticeable movement in the flowering times of some species of flowers. Shame the weather has completely turned now. 2 weeks of rain and drizzle ☔

      @@BlackMountainHoney we were picking blackberries this weekend, falling off the bushes they were so ripe. Normally late August at the very least. They were flowering all through June which is unusual

    Do you use plastic foundation on your frames?

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No - we use all wax but I am going to trial some plastic this year to see how we get on

    • @lourensklopper4217
      @lourensklopper4217 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BlackMountainHoney Just remember if you go plastic, you must make hot wax, and put on with n paint brush or roller. I know they said it got wax on, but it is good to put your own wax on.

    Thank you for your informative videos. My first year for harvesting and as I live near heath land can I leave the supers on a bit longer to take advantage of the ling heather? Also what do you do with the partially uncapped frames?

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you enjoy the videos. Ive still got supers on for colonies on the heather. You just need to make sure to do an effective late season treatment for varroa. Partially capped frames are fine but make sure you test water content as heather honey can ferment quite easily

    • @claudinecarman7262
      @claudinecarman7262 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BlackMountainHoney Thank you. Can you leave on uncapped frames for the bees for winter use or is it best to remove them totally?

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@claudinecarman7262 Fine to leave on for the bees. I would nadir the boxes and remove the excluder. Then remove the super once they have moved stores up to the brood box.

      @@BlackMountainHoney Thank you I have read about that method so will try. Your advice is appreciated.
