Really enjoyed the Video Glad Bob does work for you as well your a very good guy. You made Bob's day when you let him run your Pontiac. It was nice to see another side of Bob as well. Be safe I love the kindness and the man and shop that you are. God Bless be safe and may the New Year bring you success and Happiness.
Well thank you very much, it's been great to see Bob out there having fun and making some passes in that big bad Pontiac! Have to say it was a heck of a surprise to me personally, and I think maybe to even him, how much the old dog could still fight. Now I just gotta make sure I don't screw the car up for him ;)
I found you from the old man and I love your long videos and honesty about the real life and challenges you face if you are an average working guy and you love cars and stuff but you just have to do with what you got and you can still enjoy it it might take you a little while longer to get it to the end goal but its worth it when you can drive it and see your hard work sweat and tears finished and bringing you some good memories and smiles thanks for being genuine and honest with your content and not leaving out the tough stuff i wm subscribed with all notifications on and will watch everything you upload just wanted to let you know your on the right track and don't change the way you are doing it you are going to be successful doing this i truly believe it buddy thanks again from southern Ohio hope i get a chance to meet you sometime ill be in the same circle as you are later in the summer looking forward to it
Powder been around since the 80s of you knew the right guy lol. Wheel acid. That's about it to clean it. Talk to a wheel reconditioning company. Can't stay on it long but it'll clean it up
A wheel refinisher is exactly where my thoughts went when this thing started fighting back. Didn't imagine it was going to be THIS difficult, but now that I'm this far down the DIY path, might as well keep walking it! IF this doesn't work, I'll surrender and let someone professional handle it!
Powder coat patented in 1943. By 1974 it was in commercial use. By 1997 it was available from jobber shops. You may need to bake that manifold at 450F for hours.
I am with Bob, give that driver back the slow car he went rounds with, that is a winning combination. Make the driver happy. Fast is overrated as winning is winning.
Ohhhh I've got a WHOLE lot of Pontiac stuff to do, just a matter of time and availability. Fortunately Bob is on the team to help me move some of these things forward!
I would definitely be willing to throw that at it if I had easy access to it, unfortunately for me, I was trying to this DIY, WITHOUT going "professional" to get this done... and I've now spent way more time and probably more money because of that ;)
Good stuff as usual. I appreciate you showing the daily hot rodding grind. It paints a picture that is very real! Call me nosey...ok I'm nosey! But I'm curious if the background music at Bob's machine shop was an issue for the TH-cams?
I know a lot of it isn't sexy or flashy but it's honest and hopefully people appreciate that. Most channels just gloss over all this stuff, snap their fingers, and hey look there's a whole new engine. That's not my way ;) You bring up a very very interesting point and if you go back and watch, you'll notice that either myself or Bob is ALWAYS talking over the music. Where you get in trouble is when you have dead air with music playing. Learned THAT lesson the hard way more than a few times!
Sorry Austin, you did not stump the chump, nice try though🤣. I fully understand the trials and tribulations trying to keep old cars on the road. My daily, a 1991 C1500 Silverado(over 300,000 miles) is down with a broken transmission, 700R4 broke and puked the fluid and no money to have it rebuilt at the moment. Bob is right, build it right the first time. Thanks for taking us along Austin.
I'm guessing on the 455. An air gap intake will make more average HP and torque over the Offenhouser. But there is going to be a spot where the Offenhouser will make more torque.
Actually might be including exactly that in the next episode or two. I think there's a lot of folks who would like to see the "behind the scenes" stuff of how all this engine building stuff goes.
The tri power is SUUUUUPER tempting... we have one on a customer 389 I could probably "borrow" to test. Don't think I know anyone with an old school Poncho tunnel ram setup though.... hmmmm Thanks for watching and supporting what I'm up to!
It would certainly LOOK cool no doubt but I don't think there's any way it would make sense on that few inches :( Maybe I need... ANOTHER 455 build? ;)
For the intake try if you haven't the actual bath tub stripper for the enamel if it is still available I can't remember what it is actually called but it would strip off the paint in a tub and that stuff was tuff I stripped and painted several tubs as a Residential Maintenance technician for many years
IF the QJet comes off the 455 in the '70, it will probably go on the 350 that he is putting together now that is going back in the '71 LeMans Sport. Want to keep that car as "proper" as possible and the QJet would be perfect for it.
I've thrown everything up to aluminum oxide at it that we have access to in the shop, I was TRYING to do this without having to get anyone professional to do this. Unfortunately I undoubtedly made this slower and more expensive on myself because of that.
Definitely would be an option unfortunately we don't have a dry ice blaster ourselves and I was TRYING to do this as a DIY type thing without getting "professional" about it. We can all see how well that is working out for me!
What you need to do is go and get yourself some aircraft paint stripper cuz aircraft are made out of aluminum and they have an aircraft paint stripper that you can use and it should hopefully take off whatever that is on your dual quad often Hauser intake
Try zip strip ... Glob it on and keep it wet until you see it releasing.. use a brass bristle brush or steel wool.. also there's no need for a billet crank in a stock 455 block. Should I just went with the eagle one and put the money in the heads...
I show my mess ups. I want my grandkids to know it's ok to mess up. It's how you fix it and pick yourself up and keep going. I don't cut my mess ups. I tore 2 bolts out of my valley cover last night cause I thought they were the right bolts. Someone mislabeled the bolt bad to what they go to. I'll fix it lol!!!!
ALL Pontiac engines are air gap, every one of them, including the factory ones. Also its funny how I can build them for less than comparable power chevys, and they live for decades.

It's possible, just seems like I don't remember really anyone doing power coating back in '01. Maybe it was something that was done early on? Idk but this stuff is TOUGH to remove!
@@AutomotiveAdventuresWithAustin Powdercoating has been around since the 80's (industrial applications). I was doing it on a side-hustle basis in the early 2000's. If your manifold was done before about 2000-ish it may be epoxy powder, which really is sho nuff hard to strip.
That's certainly not something I had on my radar. The clearcoat isn't necessarily the issue, it's whatever this hardened kind of golden colored stuff under the silver that's hard as freaking concrete!
By the way, I got the latest Hot Rod magazine with the Drag Week coverage. The specialty awards winners was interesting. Quickest Oldsmobile was Chris Hosner at 15.4671. Easy to be the quickest Oldsmobile!

The longer you let it set the better it works, dont let it dry. If you dont want that crap all over you after you put it on and let it set use a pressure washer to clean it off. Dry with an air hose repeat as many times as it takes. The trick is apply it twice as heavy as Mark did.
Thinking tomorrow I'm going to hose it down, toss it in a garbage bag, and let it do it's thing. That's some nasty nasty shit so HOPEFULLY it does a good job of removing this stuff. Look around for an old Edelbrock P4B manifold I had one back in the 80's on a GTO 400 with a ram air cam and that car made some great power....
I love what you are doing mat and I love you cars
We always had our intakes glass beaded they look like brand new when done
Once I can get whatever this crap is OFF the manifold I plan on it, unfortunately this coating is proving... very very difficult.

Olds motors are a challenge to keep it from spinning rod a bearing they don't Rev very well
Yeahhhh that's one of the reasons we're building this thing as we are, just a low/mid RPM machine to make lots of torque and solid HP below 6,000rpm

I'd hazard a guess that your intake manifold may have been powdercoated. Benco B17 will take off any coating known to man

It's definitely not out of the question! No doubt this 455 would pick up some serious speed especially with the better breathing in the higher RPMs.
