    Little these Sikhs of Bagh Sardaran knew, College Road and Bhabra Bazar knew that they will have to leave this city of theirs after 15 years. My heart goes out to these who enriched the city through their culture, faith and economic activities.

    None of them would have even thought in their dream that they will be forced out of their own city / country after 15 years . Very painful and unfortunate event of history .😢

    Look at that amazing footage! Rare find indeed. You can see how much the Sikh style of dress has changed, the Sardar ji at 1:00 performing Gatka, you can see how large the turbans/pagris were, turla/cloth hanging from the sides of turbans and very loosely tied, white/offwhite/beige Kurta Chadra/pajamas. Now the Sikh turbans are mostly of the Taksali Dhumalla or Gol Dastaar style and majority of amritdharis wear the blue or orange colors.

    1941 Population Census
    Muslim: 628,193 80%
    Hindu: 82,478 10.5%
    Sikh: 64,127 8.17%
    Christian: 4,212 0.54%
    Other: 6,221 0.79%
    Even though Hindus and Sikhs were minorities in the region, they owned majority of the businesses and industries, sad that a few years after this footage was filmed all these people had to leave their homes and start all over again. In 1947 when Jinnah and the Muslim League called for "direct action", the Muslims launched attacks on the Hindus and Sikhs, people were murdered, brutally beaten, rape, kidnapped and looted, close to 7,000 had lost their lives. Very tragic chapter in history.

    • @okee7
      @okee7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yes, the Rawalpindi riots were started by the Muslims in March 1947 and was the second big communal riot after Jinnah's Direct Action call in 1946 which caused the Calcutta riots. Muslim League used riots to butcher Sikhs & Hindus before independence to further their cause of two nation theory

    • @hr5581
      @hr5581 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@okee7Many don't know the fact that riots/ Genocide in west Pakistan first erupted in Hazara district of North west frontier province even before Rawalpindi in 1946 . My maternal grandparents hailed from there prior to partition & post partition the landed up in GTB Nagar ( Formerly called Punjabi Refugee camp), infact this refugee camp was dedicated to frontier refugees only

    • @okee7
      @okee7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@hr5581 I'm sure there may have been riots before Rawalpindi especially in remote areas of NWFP where it may have not even been documented. But the Rawalpindi riots and the scale in which even Master Tara Singh's whole family was butchered was the catalyst that spread hatred all though out India. The Muslim League's plan to achieve Pakistan was through this method of hate & division

    So many changes have come to the dress Sikhs wear. These days Sikhs living in Punjab, India have completely different dress. They don't wear turla on the turban and salwar anymore. Ninty percent Sikhs living in western countries are clean shaven. The customs of any community change with the time and place.
