I have wired and fitted 6 towbars and about to fit another, working out the wiring has been a nightmare, you make it easy understanding the testing of the wiring socket, testers are on the way. Thanks
Thanks for posting this... the Skoda main dealer told me that you can't do a home fit for a tow-bar and electrics but I fitted one to a Fabia Estate today and followed your guidance for the wiring. All works fine except one weird anomaly where if the main lights are on they switch off rather than get brighter when I break. Daniel Marsh hi mate that is certainly unusual make sure you've got a good Earth and you are not back feeding through something also make sure you've got a good power direct from the battery and just make sure you have the correct box for your car
Many VAG cars overload protection and will cut the power to the bulb if it thinks there is too much power going to it. Any VW, Audi, Skoda or Seat after about 2004 should have a bypass relay ("Box") put in regardless of whether it has led lights or not. A lot of them run a dual voltage single filament bulb for the side & brake lights, which bypass relays can decipher the signal for and apply the correct lights on your trailer.

Hi there mate, I hope you can help me. I have an Xsara Picasso from 05 ,It is muliplex, canbus. I have fitted the towbar and now need to do the wiring. The 7 pin wiring is 2 harnesses. One with 4 wires and the other with 3 wires . This towbar and wires are for a Picasso. Why are they split up like this ? I have a by-pass relay and I can see I have to screw all the wires into the relay. But then I am confused ,can it all be wired to the left side of the lights or how do I know if I have to wire in on both sides ?. The left side is 8 wires going to the backlight and the right side is 6 wires. Lets just say you explain to me that I need to wire both sides, Do I then lets say the red is the lights on wire and I need to connect this to the red on the relay. Do I need to add an extra wire there and take it over to the red on the other side. ? Also the colours on both sides are a little diffent. Appreciate your help. hello can you help me ,i have a peugeot 3008 year 2011 i have put a tow bar on it i am putting the relay on the wire loom of the car do i have to take the negative leed of the battery many thanks
Always best to use the power from the battery as it's completely separate from all the other systems you can use an earth at the back just make sure you have a separate Earth and it's not shared with anything else
hei, when all wires are connected like this, is there no shortage of electric power for the light bulbs? and wont the wires get burnt since some wires will support twice as much bulbs than before, if not more for some... regards Dovis btw easy explanation, thanks for the video
Dovydas Tyrius hes wiring them in parallel so the current will increase to support the tow bar lights. The circuit with factory wiring will be more than capable of handling it. He did advise that a higher amp fuse is installed but isnt really needed. The fuse is mainly to protect against a short circuit.
A lot of cars will have a spare connector in the back where a factory option tow bar plugs in. So it is worth having a look for a spare connector along the rear. It makes the job easier and doesn’t overload the cars wiring.
Even though mercs have standard bulbs they still need the bypass relay ("Box") they have very sensitive bulb failure systems. Any switches and bulbs on the dash for towing will only be activated with a dedicated wiring kit & re programming the car.
This video is great, I was verging on the terrified looking at the wiring kit / instructions I got from Halfords. If you get a chance to look at the one remaining question I have left...from this video it seems like I won't need the bypass relay supplied, instead I should just directly connect the wires without it (guessing the bypass relay is only needed for can bus wiring)? Whether you get a chance to reply or not - thanks a lot for doing the video.

Yes, I do not like Scotch grips either, and like you, use solder or crimp plus and sockets and heat shrink (remember to put in place first) and pipe pliers are better more often than not
Hi buddy i've asked question on this before but now getting round to putting the tow bar on. My Citroen C3 2002 model I believe is multiplex wiring? The towbar I have is new but bought as second hand the guy wrote some instructions down which make absolutely no sense ( so yep there are no wiring instructions ) the kit i'm using is like the one in the video but has a small box attached which I believe is the sounder to let you know when the indicators are off or on. will need advice on that as well but for now. I have a 3 lead digital tester can I use that to test the car plug connector as you do with your tester? I'm guessing yes? can send a picture if needed. Also the towbar is already wired to a 7 pin plug, I see these are normally wired one way IE the break lights to say pin 6 is this universal for UK / Ireland? Ive had a few people say that the C3 light wiring can be problematic and can damage the ECU if wired wrong so any advice would be greatly welcomed buddy? I got a quote for a garage to do just the wiring this was £60 so would like to save that if can do it myself Cheers Bill
Billy The Loam Gardener hi mate it's very hard for me to tell you what to do as to be honest I do not understand your message you will have to send me pictures I might build to get a better understanding then
bodgit and leggit garage cheers mate I've done more research and think i got my head round things. as the towbar was from another C3 same year and not needed a relay box I'm assuming it's not full cam but i think similar wiring to car you put the towbar on. my main worry was the ECU being damaged but as there is no voltage except the signal going back to the ECU i cant see it causing an issue to the ECU am i right in that thinking? if so then i can take a pic of the tester i have to see if it's ok using that for the checks you did could i also use a multi meter. i know its hard to explain and understand your confusion just hoped I'd explained better cheers bill
hello I just fitted my towbar to my "corsa c 2004" and now i dont know if it has canbus wiring. can you help me find out if it has it or not? thanks and keep up the good work. :)
Eotvos Marcel hi mate I'm not too sure what you mean but what I would suggest to do is look at your rear light make sure you have no water corrosion on the connections or any cross wires
I hate to disagree but you should not connect left and right tail lights together and increase the fuse rating. You should run twin cable across to the opposite side and connect both side lights separately as well as the indicators and leave the fuses as they are. Bad practice to uprate fuses.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Where to begin with this message? Did you not watch the video? Did you not see everything working properly and correctly in the end? So obviously I connected it properly. If you are trying to say you have to join up with the same wire colour in the car then wow just wow
If it’s a newer car this is wrong as you’re going to end up costing folk money and warranty issues. Newer cars are canbus and if you do this it’s going to make car throw codes etc

If they're cars likely to be used for it, hatchbacks like this aren't gonna have on

Would love to know is it the same for a 2002 vauxhall zafira
Hi mate the wiring on the towbar will be the same colours but the wiring on the car will not be if you follow the same procedures you will be ok you just need to make sure if you need the canbus box for your car
@@bodgitandleggitgarage it don't have led lights and no ecu at the rear for canbus lighting anything before 2005 I've read is safe.
Where can I get a good tester like that
ebay mate
How big fuse u suggest ? Ha
I film the rear of my trailer, when im alone....review it, and ...sorted....or when i have to go to M.OT....also carbrakes light and rear backuplichts( the white ones)are easy to test that way...💪hope this helped...as a return....Bob Belgium thanks brother!
super good video. thanks
Brill clear video
Any chance you can do 13 pin electrics on a Navara D40
Cheers
Keep up the good work
Yes, I do not like Scotch grips either, and like you, use solder or crimp plus and sockets and heat shrink (remember to put in place first) and pipe pliers are better more often than not
Hi buddy i've asked question on this before but now getting round to putting the tow bar on.
I got a quote for a garage to do just the wiring this was £60 so would like to save that if can do it myself
Cheers Bill
Billy The Loam Gardener hi mate give me the details of your car number plate Exeter I will find out if it needs the box
Hi mate Iv'e messaged you the details you asked for
cheers
Hi mate did you manage to find the information for me sent you a pm with the details.

Hi.Sorry but how it is possible when I put my car on reverse the electric is going for ewerithing. Its not wireling for nothing. Its Peugeot boxer 2005.
Eotvos Marcel hi mate I'm not too sure what you mean but what I would suggest to do is look at your rear light make sure you have no water corrosion on the connections or any cross wires
bodgit and leggit garage
Hi.Thank you for answer.Yes I change caster.Was rusty.And was wrong eart.But is work now.Thank you.
Great video. Thankyou Shame you weren’t fitting the buzzer too
Buzzer?
I have no wires on left or right. Only amplifier and fm unit. Audi A4 quattro 2006.
I hate to disagree but you should not connect left and right tail lights together and increase the fuse rating. You should run twin cable across to the opposite side and connect both side lights separately as well as the indicators and leave the fuses as they are. Bad practice to uprate fuses.
If you understood properly you would understand that it's no problem do you know what in series/ in parallel means
If black is ,left tail. And brown is right tail. Then why not connect to the proper corresponding wires on the car
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Where to begin with this message? Did you not watch the video? Did you not see everything working properly and correctly in the end? So obviously I connected it properly. If you are trying to say you have to join up with the same wire colour in the car then wow just wow
It's not can bus wiring it's pulse width modulation pwm
CAM? bus?
sorry the DSO I meant...
hi get it from uk and ist a hantek dso 1200
Mk3 cortina
Yeeeaaaa haaaaaa!
If it’s a newer car this is wrong as you’re going to end up costing folk money and warranty issues. Newer cars are canbus and if you do this it’s going to make car throw codes etc
Before making comments make sure you read the title properly and watch the video properly I clearly state this is how you wire a Towbar Without canbus I have done another video how to do it another video how to do it if your car has canbus wiring
Your comments has absolutely no relevance to this vidno relevant to this video I don't understand why people do this why people do this especially when You don't read the title or watch the video properly just try and make just try and make a smart comment to make yourself comment to make yourself feel good or look good when it has absolutely nothing when it has content of the video
So I'm watching how to wire a 2001 golf with this video... And get an ad for the new Bentley Continental GT V8??? Cmon Google/CIA/BillGates/MI5/BigBrother, you can do a lot better than that...
The connections your using are pish m8 they give you norhing but hassle thanks for the video
very well explained.thanks.
Very helpful. Thank you.
