It would never work to pick an A&M fan out of the lineup, because they would tell you they are an A&M fan 5 times before the lineup officially started.

Ohio State vs. Florida would pit the two most obnoxious fan bases against each other, and nobody outside of either fanbase would care - we would all be happy no matter who wins. Rutgers vs. Vanderbilt would be amusing, as would Missouri vs. Northwestern.

I always thought create a rivalry could be done by having your bowl game opponent be your home opener the following season. It follows a lot of the same rules, non-conference teams at a similar level and would breed a lot of hate during the offseason for the team having to carry that loss. Both teams would be at a similar level and the having a good resume game for your home opener is so much more entertaining than division 2 opponents on opening weekend. And having new short-term rivalries every year would be amazing imo

Spring Games against FCS teams are perfect. FCS team gets money big schools get to try out young players vs a real game setting. Injurys happen in the Scrimmage games. More college football is good im suprised that the idea gets hate.
Throw Syracuse, Virginia Tech and Miami in there and you’ve got basically all my favorite old school Big East rivalries from the 90s plus Penn State who’s a rival for all of them.
