This is a great lesson, even if it's not the whole thing.
One thing I have noticed is that everyone playing this on youtube seems to not quite get the same swing or groove that Greg has on the record. I've looked into this a bit, and for anyone interested in playing this (the intro riff) correctly the secret is hybrid picking.
This guy correctly identifies the "hammer ons from nowhere" Greg uses in the intro, but greg usually uses hybrid picking with this technique. Check out his Premier Guitar columns for more.
In other words, try using your middle finger to pick the higher notes in the intro riff. It makes it far easier to achieve the correct rhythm, something which is very difficult with straight alternate picking.

Agree, i feel like i'v finally 'got it' after years of toying with it. I'v tried to adopt alot of Brett Garsed's hybrid picking styles (he truly is the master IMO) and it makes licks/riffs like jump start flow much nicer. Ofcourse, there is the issue of Greg Howe's insane tapping and other techniques!

Is this guy Brazilian? I'm watching this cat and he reminds me of Gustavo Guerra, and both the two of them are just so damn fluid, natural and spirited, it just makes me mad. Way too gifted.

this is a great job...a very good lesson, with every note explained in a slow way...amazing...it's just the start , because to learn this guitar masterpiece , we have to practise for ages, beginning from the unusual key (C#m) that creates problems of visualization, in my view...who knows why Greg chose this particular tonality...(?)- anyway, it's a question of practise, groove, memory,,,for ages,,,,me thinks

How the f*ck he (Greg Howe) come up with this lick? It's casual pentatonic with little chromatics (something that RHCP or Jimi Hendrix usually play), but the phrasing is confusing like hell, and he play it so fast, but also groovy and fun to listen.
*my comment only after watch the first 5 minute.

Target notes of the pentatonic scale to chromatic scales.

A compressor probably would have made your job a lot easier. And judging from the original recording, it sounds like Greg probably used one.
