Hi there, thank you for your comment. Each inner hair cell (IHC) synapses with several type I auditory nerve fibers at the basal end of the cell. A mechanical deflection of the IHC bundle toward the tallest stereocilium leads to an opening of ion channels and influx of K+ ions, which in turn causes a depolarization of the IHC. Depolarization in turn opens voltage-gated calcium channels in the hair cell membrane, and the resultant Ca2+ influx causes a release of neurotransmitter from the basal end of the IHC into the synaptic cleft. The accumulation of neurotransmitter substance at the nerve fiber synapses eventually results in a depolarization of the auditory nerve fiber, and a propagation of the action potential centrally along the fiber.
