    I'm working on a A4010-SU same issue slowing down after playing for 15-20 minutes. I've purchased a new pinch roller "tire" off Ebay and about to replace it which lead me here. Also a member of tapeheads a fantastic source and community. I heard you mention cut off the old tire and clean up with acetone. That will be my approach. Thanks for sharing! Best from Saskatchewan Canada!

    Is it common for a small spark when magnetic tape hits sensor

    Excellent video! I have a Teac 330010, I notice sometimes the tape slips off the pinch roll, I stop the deck at start it back up and it works. I was wonder what would make it slip off the pinch roller in-ward toward the deck? I notice it does the same thing on my Pioneer RT 701 deck too once in a while. The pinch rollers don't look that bad. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

      Thanks for watching. Replacing the pinch roller stopped the slipping problem on my deck. You could try cleaning it up real good and see if that helps.

      You're welcome - glad it was helpful! Akai makes good stuff. When I was in high school my neighbor had an Akai (not sure it was that same model, but if not it was close) and I fixed it for him.

      ACBMemphis Sounds like you had a knack for this early on! I just put two spare idler tires in pure Simple Green, gonna leave them there for two days. I wanted to try a non toxic way of restoring the rubber and I saw that auto repairmen use that trick for their rubber parts to clean and soften old ones. Who knows! If it doesn’t work I’ll have to spend a little dough or use Rubber Renew ☠️. Can’t wait to get this thing up and running. Cheers!

    Awesome video, I have the same tape deck trying to restore. Replaced same parts and have the same issue with slowing down. Do you have the list of capacitors and possibly a source? You say you replaced them "with a bunch of capacitors" but didn't say what you replaced them with. Need help with the electronics, please.

    • @ACBMemphis

      Thanks! The culprit was a small 0.5 microfarad capacitor across the motor and I got the replacements from Digikey... I posted my part numbers to a comment on video #1, and will paste them below... Make sure and double-check values as it has been a couple of years. Here is a link to the thread on tapeheads.net if you look at the picture from 10-10-2019 it is the capacitor at the lower-right corner that was the problem: www.tapeheads.net/showthread.php?t=76056&page=2
      I believe this is the part number I used to replace the bad one: P12269-ND. Replacing the remaining capacitors in this machine is tricky, especially the very large silver ones, since they are actually multiple capacitors in one package. I bought multiple capacitors from DigiKey and taped them together into a package. The remaining part numbers from the order were (2) of 1572-1534-ND, (4) of 399-12838-ND, (1) of 1572-1528-ND, and (10) of 1572-1260-ND. The last part number (with 10) is for the many "Suzuki bomb" capacitors on all the switches. It probably did not hurt to replace all of those, but I think if I had just replaced the 1 it would have fixed the deck!

    Yo man I had a question idk if you’d know, I have one of these and every time I hit the forward or backward it seems to be stud on fast mode even when the button is clicked, would you have any idea why ?

    • @ACBMemphis
      @ACBMemphis  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Maybe the roller tire is not moving completely into place? When you press Play it should pop up into place, holding the tape against the capstan. You could try to start it then very slightly press the metal disc on the roller see if it gets slower..

  • @SDsailor7

    What type of capacitor were the ones you replaced the Suzuki capacitors with? Were they electrolytic, film, ceramic? Also were they polarized or non polarized?

    I have a TEAC 4010 and currently all I get a hissing sound in the play mode. Manual says check S2 switch. Any suggestions?

    • @ACBMemphis
      @ACBMemphis  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a switch on the far right "Source/Tape" make sure it is set to tape. Make sure to use a tape that you know has music on it. Make sure the Playback knob is turned up. Try it with headphones plugged directly into the machine, to make sure the problem is not in your amplifier. Make sure that all 3 cables that connect the tape transport to the amplifier section are connected in the back-- that's both multi-pin connectors, plus the RCA cable which should be going from "Playback Out" to "Playback In".

    • @barrysmith2502
      @barrysmith2502 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ACBMemphis Great! thank you for that info. Connected all cables and the right and left Playback out to Playback in and Bingo, I have audio. However now that I have audio I now have another situation. The speed is too fast, I have the chipmunks singing. I tried the speed selector switch and the 3 3/4 is depressed not the 7 1/2. I will take the back off and see if there is something visibly incorrect that can be changed. Recommendations? You have made a very frustrated man very happy. Now the speed.

    • @ACBMemphis
      @ACBMemphis  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@barrysmith2502 That's great news! On the speed, what I would do is first determine if the wrong speed is being selected OR the speed is "just wrong" all the time... If you have a 7 1/2 tape, play it. If 7 1/2 sounds OK, but 3 3/4 does not, maybe the speed selector is not working? My speed selector was fine, so I didn't have to touch that. It's a large metal bar that moves a bunch of wire connectors back and forth when you press those buttons. Anyway, the next (and more likely) suspects would be the pinch roller or motor. To test the pinch roller, play the tape and while it's playing gently push the silver disk up towards the capstan and see if the speed corrects. If so, then it's likely in need of greasing that assembly and/or buying a new pinch roller.

      @bluestingerborg 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ACBMemphis I have a teac 2300s. Whenever I play it about like 15 minutes into it or towards the end of the tape, the pitch usually flucuates and fludders like the reels are having trouble spinning but they're not. What can that be?

    • @ACBMemphis
      @ACBMemphis  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bluestingerborg That's an interesting problem. Two things come to mind immediately. One: try to eliminate heat or electronic related problems.. Start the tape and when it gets to the problem area, shut it down and walk away for several hours. Then restart with the deck "cool" and see if the problem still persists. Another thing to try is check pinch roller pressure- when the problem happens gently press the pinch roller up and left (on the silver part) to see if the problem goes away.
