Great Champions Series final. Sampras had a 13 year age factor difference. Mac had just turned 50, Pete was 37 at this time. Very entertaining match. Enjoyed watching
Jonhy Mac..the most mechanical player that there was. So smooth in his shots all of his shots ...you could hardly hear his movements just like a Swiss watch. Then came Federer...Mr Rolex!!
Admirable Mac, una bestia en la red, su derecho feo y su revés y servicio muy buenos, muy profesional toda su vida y se nota que se cuida y ama el tenis.
Afraid so, he took a lot off his serve. Remeber that Sampras had three competetive matches with Federer a bit later, 2-1 Federer with all matches very close.
@weej266 I know, right. Caught him in Boston 2 years ago there is some video with Mats from the final. Mats was pretty cool to throw me the last ball, as I was seated courtside at the time.
They are both wonderful shots. I just mentioned Sampras because nowadays it would be kinda unthinkable to counter an approach using a long slice backhand!
Ok I have been watching this and its like the Senior PGA Tour. Its nice to see these legends battle it out. Now I have a concern. And its about Age. Andy Roddick IS ONLY 33 YEARS OLD!!! He could still be on the ATP Tour. He is out there playing guys like McEnroe who is 56, Jim Courier who is 44, Andre Agassi who is 45, Sampras who is 43 etc. I do not think that is fair at all. And he has been dominating the 2015 Powershares series. And when they only play 1 set give me a break. I understand its a one night tournament, but the most he would play would be 2 matches in a night, so 2 sets and possible tie breaks. As with the Senior tour there is an Age qualification. I know Tennis is different, but give me a break. A 33 year old who could still be on the ATP Tour playing a 56 year old is highly unfair. Can anyone who is a tennis expert please explain this to me thanks.
***** I absolutely agree. Maybe appearing at one or two events a year would be fine, but the way it is, the age gaps are too great. You can see that McEnroe still holds his own against Sampras, Chang, Courier and so on, but Roddick or Blake are just too young.
Lol, Roddick is even younger than some of the guys in the top 100 (Karlovic, Stepanek, Lorenzi, Lopez, Ferrer, and of course, Federer). In today's era, he's still very much capable of winning ATP tournaments at that age.
The cutoff used to be 35, but they lowered it to 30... probably because they thought guys like Roddick would draw more attendance. But 46 year old Edberg beat 31 year old Safin in straight sets, serve and volleying on clay! McEnroe took out James Blake when James was about 34 and John was in his 50s! Marcelo Rios was 30 when he got beaten by a few older guys. Tennis can be played well right into one's 50s, or even 60s, when it comes to doubles. You just can't keep up with the grind of the tour as you get older. But in one set, and sometimes two, anything can happen. It was said that bill Tilden, the best player of the 20s, could take a set from anyone until he was 50....I think the same was true of McEnroe, although he kept it going until he was 55......Everything in tennis improves as you get older, except your quickness. Your mental game, your variety, your shot selection, your pattern recognition, your service confidence....they all keep getting better if you keep playing.
@@muccisebastian9300 Sampras' serve at his Peak is too much for most anyone... he had too much control of it.. even his second serve is better than about 90% of players first serve.. I think he probably coulda gotten a few more years on tour but he didn't have the hunger anymore.. and he was somewhat held back by the fact that in 2003 he was still using a Prostaff 85 which he admitted took a toll on his body later in his career. when he was doing an exhibition match he tried out someone's Babolat Pure Storm GT and commented about how much easier it was on his arm.
Ah....know your tennis eh young man? Quite correct, it can be an excellent counter, even when other options are available, if you have the touch to keep it low. Low, with little pace, gives the volleyer not much to work with. Unless you are playing Mac, or Sampras, or Edberg, the odds of the other guy hitting a winner off of the shot are low. He can try to hit a touch drop shot, or he can shovel it back deep, but if you have good passing shots and are quick, you get a good crack at a pass.
Yes some of the best slice shots in the world he can just shop that down Cut You Down short angles long angles deep angles dropshots it's got all that because uses that backspin he has on that slice and that gives him so much control Mabel's them to approach attack drop-shot and gives him all kinds of opportunities the other players don't have that Chopper grippies using enables them to be the perfect position without changing grip in the building to slice at any given time
I always wanted to see a match between McEnroe and Venus Williams, in the years he was trash talking her and Serenas abilities after that maybe a doubles match with the Williams Sisters vs. the McEnroe Brothers. Oh well one can dream.
Yes for sure. He was working one gear below his max the whole way through. It's not even a remotely fair contest considering that Sampras had won the US open in 2002, while Mac's last slam was 1984. All that said, Mac is in phenomenal form for a man that age. Truly one of a kind.
Pete used an eastern forehand grip. So does Roger. But most players today use some form of the semi-western grip, or a full western (Nadal uses the full western). Some say Roger's forehand is kind of half and half western and eastern....
If Champions Series Tennis is listening, I would like the opportunity to submit music for your highlight reels that would be of much higher quality then what is in this video. I can send links and examples of my current professional work that is being used.
I spoke with Jon once. He said his strokes had one weakness, the high soft backhand wa tough for him to generate pace off of. In the last rally, you can see Pete throw up such a shot to John. It leads to a weak reply on which Pete Feasts...
Are you kidding. He won that first set by the skin of his teeth,a nd had to battle in the second. McEnroe had beaten him the year before in this tournament.
Where is the 2012 Powershares match where Mac defeats the 12years younger Sampras? There's no way a peak sampras would match the 84 mac. For those wondering why sampras is forgotten already - At least half of sampras major finals were agains the likes of Cedric Pioline, Korda, philippousis, Martin etc etc..who?...mac had to beat Borg, connors, Lendl lol.
For the record - this is an idiot. Sampras never even played Korda or Flipper in a grand slam final. He left off people like Ivanisevic, Courier, Agassi and Becker. Typical youtube - ignorant dullard who doesn't even know the basic facts he asserts.
That Sampras serve .. brings back memories of my childhood and 90s tennis 👌
For his age Mac played fantastic
What a duel it would have been had these two played each other in their respective primes.

1:44 - Absolutely GENIUS
It's insane that Federer is as old now as Sampras was in this vid yet still one of the very best tennis players in the world
More insane the level of play Mac is at here at his age.
DaggerMan11 nadals the best tho
DaggerMan11 Federer is an old man on PEDs. Nadal and Djokovic also on PEDs getting older and still at the top.
Got to love how Fed fanboys have to bring him into every tennis video, even those he's not in.
Different circumstances, definitely
Admirable Mac, una bestia en la red, su derecho feo y su revés y servicio muy buenos, muy profesional toda su vida y se nota que se cuida y ama el tenis.
Can't wait to see 60 year old Federer play 56(?) year old Nadal.
Nadal will still be winning grand slams at that age
Not aged well
Pete cool as always. Unbelievable player and remarkable personality.👍👍👍
John-KING !!!!!!!
Amazing!!!
Legends!!!
Does it seem like Sampras went easy on the old-er man?
By going down 4-1 in the first set tiebreak? Come on, wake up.
It’s basically an exhibition
@@MrPernell27 It is never an exhibition when Mac is playing. He plays 100% or not at all.
I went in person to an exhibition with these 2, it was clear Sampras didn't start unleashing his weapons until after he was down, same script.
Afraid so, he took a lot off his serve. Remeber that Sampras had three competetive matches with Federer a bit later, 2-1 Federer with all matches very close.
From memory, McEnroe did beat Sampras once on the senior tour.
Does anyone has a link to it?
Yes he did beat him once
@weej266 I know, right. Caught him in Boston 2 years ago there is some video with Mats from the final. Mats was pretty cool to throw me the last ball, as I was seated courtside at the time.
What about that one at 1:54, from Big Mac?
They are both wonderful shots. I just mentioned Sampras because nowadays it would be kinda unthinkable to counter an approach using a long slice backhand!
Mac is unmatched talent in tennis history
Mac est le plus grand joueur de tout les temps
Peut-Être.
Mac is still playing very well

Roddick doesn't use PEDs. Pro players who play past the age of 35 are doping.
That large check for $60K looked about right... for a 1970's mens regular tour final, that is.
Not really - it's actually a very effective way to counter an approach as it keeps the ball low.
Sampras is still the best on my book
84 McEnroe vs 96 Sampras?
I gotta give it to Mac, on pure guts.
Sampras serve on his peak too much for Mcenroe

Funny thing is 13 years later we don’t think of 37 as old! Not with what roger did and what Rafa and Novak are still doing
well novax isn't 37 yet, and he just got pumped at wimbledon by a guy that had only played on grass in the atp a couple of times....
Samp is forever Camp. Always GOAT to me~~♡♡♡♡

Look up Venus vs Karsten Brassch - you'll see how well Venus compared against lesser players...
Pete is a Class Act! Mac and his tacky fist-pumping, cut it out! Sweet point at 1:44 with Pete slice curving into Mac's corner.
Not tacky...Mac was pumped!!! Quite impressive how Mac, at 50, gave Sampras a tough match!!!
Cut it out? He’s an old man, and the crowd loves him!
Sampras took it easy, you could tell.

@@alanfrost75 yep
I doubt it

Pistol Pete taking it easy with McEnroe lol
Sure that's why Pete got down 4-1 in the first set tiebreak, and was almost down 5-1, but Mc Missed an easy pass by an inch.
Otherwise it wouldn't be any fun to watch.
Agreed:)
Sampras is quite younger than Big Mac
I´m not an expert, but McEnroe uses a classic forehand and Sampras uses modern forehand, or Am I wrong?
Sampras’s forehand isn’t exactly modern. He still hits it pretty flat. But yes, McEnroe plays everything with a continental grip
Continental grip is very good for slice, but forehand isn´t so powerful with continental.
