I believe I found the issue - bad/clogged rad and this was leading to air in the system. Replaced the leaking rad and burped the system - no issues since.
theres an ecu under the radiator which is supposed to control when the fans kick on it's a common problem on vw that fan computer is faulty sometimes it will work sometimes it wont, you could even try spinning the larger fan blade by hand when the small fan is the only one working and the big fan will all of a sudden start spinning
I would recommend looking at replacing the temp sensor housing and the gasket between it and the engine block. I replaced those and it night have something to do with the fix.
Some people think that the cooler a car runs the better it is but actually a car running around 90-100 is much better for an engine than running too cold! but if the coolant is boiling then you have a problem!! Hope this helps!
had the same problem with a 1999 vw golf. my issue came from the fuse box on top of the battery. have a look if one contact is darker than the other and if so clean it and put it back. start car put ac on temp on cold this should make fans come on. check all fuses and clean if needed
I found a hose just past the upper temp sensor that is kinked. I've also noticed that when it starts to raise temperature and I rev the engine the fans kick in. I wonder if the kink in that hose is slowing the coolant flow and causing this. I will replace it soon and find out.
Had the exact problem. Overheats only when idling or idling with ac on. I opened the hood while idling and the small fan spinning but not the big fan. I pushed the big fan and it seemed stuck. I could run the car with heater on at max while at idling. So the my fix to this problem is to start from the basics 1) unplug both fans and apply ground and 12v to the fan to simulate low and high speeds. For my fans it's brown wire for ground and middle pin for low speed and side pin for high speed. Small fans works on both speed and big fan no response. So my problem was the big fan is dead. 2) if both of your fans works on both high and low speeds, you have to diagnose the thermocouple on the side of the radiator by unplugging the harness and jumping the pins. 3) if that works then it could be a clogged radiator, thermostat bad, collapsing hoses, leaking radiator cap.
Done all that, replaced all the above parts and the problem still here. But not on idle, when on heavy engine load, ie driving uphill with full throttle, temp goes to 116C. When I reach the top and drive downhill, temp drops to 91C
Bill Jones. I have to say that is incorrect. Most commercial vehicles are designed to stay in the dead center of the temp gauge. If it moves are far as it does in this video there is cause for alarm. I would check all the temp sensors. One might not be reading correctly causing the fans to turn on too late. On MK4 1.8t i think there is two.
If you experience this, then turn your fan to max, put the heat to max, and turn on the AC. This cools of the engine therefore you avoid to endanger your engine due to high temperature
have anybody find the solution for this problem cause i have the same problem vw golf iv 1.8t i have change everthing in coolant system and i have rebuilt all the engine and still do the same
I wouldn't worry its not overheating unless it goes near the 130c Mark!!! That looks perfectly normal! My corolla's fans dont turn on until 3/4 on the gauge then cools to half way!! If the pump was stuffed that would make the fans run constantly and as soon as the fans turn on the temp drops dramatically, if it were the pump the temp would take ages to cool down!! if it was my car I wouldn't worry about it!
VW's re notorious for running hot. The engineers feel the car is more efficient if it is running a little warmer than average. If your gauge had reached the mark before the red line, I would be concerned. Normally the fan(s) will cycle at 220 degrees and shut off at 185. If yours is cycling much higher than that, you may want to consider the fan relay switch. Just a suggestion.
The Idle fan is not running in your video. At idle that fan on the radiator should run. I am having a similar issue with my jetta now. I also have checked my fuses and have no other obvious issues, but is also is not heating past the 190 degree mark. So it is not really over heating but my a/c is blowing hot air no matter what I set the temp to. Update with whatever the fix was.
it seems like the low speed does not work. check the 30 amp fuse on top of battery fuse box. the common isue is that the fusebox is melted under the fuse.
I got the same problem! I have a jetta 2002 1.8 turbo and it overheat when I'm in the traffic so I changed his water pump for a metal impeller and also thermostat sensor and it continues overheating in the traffic! The fan turn on a little bit late I don't understand why! So I'm planning to change the thermostat to see what happen
I currently have the same problem but my fans aren't cutting in at all on my audi a3 1.8t. I've changed the fan switch, the thermostat and the fan relay control unit. The mechanic that do my head gasket said the fans are good but he can't find the problem. I'm in a bit of a pickle. But I've just watched a video where a mechanic just changed a burnt out fuse that sits in a box on top of the battery. So tomorrow I'm gonna check out the fuse. Hopefully changing that fuse will sort the problem. I'll post an update, once I've done it
Same here I have an 02 jetta 1.8t I already replace numerous parts sensors, thermostat, radiator, waterpump, fan clutch and checked the fuses all check out OK. I bypassed all that and installed a switch in the dash to manually start the fans and still overheating!Only thing left is the fan control module. If this doesn't fix it to the scrap yard or gunna sell it for parts
I have a volkswagen passat 2003 1.8t and i had the same problem. Its a turbo engine so its normal for the engine to get hot. If your on the highway you can turn the ac on. If your driving local on a hot summer day don't turn the ac on. if the engine tem gets near the red oull over and let the car cool down. Always have coolant in the car.
Did you find the solution? My driver side fan only kicks on when the temp goes pass the 1st line after the middle. However ac is deleted and heater so my passenger fan never turns on. The fan turns off once it goes back to the middle
So far I've checked and replaced: - rad temp sensor (January) - coolant temp sensor (today) - thermostat (a month ago) - bridge fans - both speeds working - AC on - both fans kick in, AC is cold - fuses inside check out - fuses under the hood are good as well - coolant flows in the coolant orb - I have circulation Out of ideas. Anyone?
Here is one that is going to be Painful. Just to let you guys know, the impeller in the water pump on these wonderful cars is made out of PLASTIC, yes plastic! Overtime the impellers had tendency to disintegrate due to heat, excess of antifreeze, and time. You water pump is noting more then a spinning shaft.

Same problem bro. I have changed the thermostat, radiator, coolant temp sensor, cooling fan controls module and it still does this bullshit.
Faulty temperature sensor or Fan relay.
Having a similar issue, you currently have any tutorial to check any of the 2?

thermostat is not opening all the way or temp sensor however the audi tt have dashboard faults

I'm also think my water circulation is poor because wen I remove the return to the water tank I don't see it returning in.
i know this is from july 2012 and im having the same issue. were you able to solve it
is your water pump I use to have the same problem with my 05 jetta 1.8t
It was heating up when we wore moving but when we stopped the temp goes down it went up to 130c
This car have a problem with the sludge. What is the interval oil change?
Had the same problem today it could be thermostat or bad water pump
did anybody ever find out the problem?

Make sure that your water circulation does`t have AIR in the system.
My car is doing the same thing. About to sell the death trap 😂😂😂
"Bad Head Gasket".The pressure from the Pistons is going into the water passeges of the block.
Exactly my golf 4, 1.9 TDI problem, so do I replace the head gaskets?
Hi! can anyone help me out. My vw bora v5 is overheating. how can I trace and solve the problem. i have changed the the water pump.
this is happening to my 03 1.8t jetta. im begining to think its the water pump. even tho i replaced it 50k ago with a metal impeller.
Did you fix it? Im having a similar problem, however my fans are working fine.
I have the same problem whit a Jetta 2.0 2005, did anyone found a solution for this problem?? Help
it seems like the low speed does not work.
check the 30 amp fuse on top of battery fuse box.
the common isue is that the fusebox is melted under the fuse.

Heriberto Miranda the radiator temp sensor try that
Car is running hot but water pump already replaced vw a4

Cooling fan switch is not working
Did you find a solution mate?
I have found a solution to this. I replaced the 2 fans
slightly over seem,s ok?

What did you end up finding out? I'm having the same problem with my 02 Jetta
Head gasket perhaps... if your system is bubbling up
I have a volkswagen passat 2003 1.8t and i had the same problem. Its a turbo engine so its normal for the engine to get hot. If your on the highway you can turn the ac on. You have to replace Reilly fans
Did you ever find the problem am have the same problem with my 02 jetta 1.8t
Marvin R did you ever solve it I have the same car
I don't have a solution. What I'm trying to find out is what causes this.
Did you find the solution?

,,,if your water level is low constantly then u might want to check the water pump it
Could be thermostat
Thay happened to me same with the ac, change the fuse box or just the ac box. Check that out, vw dealer will charge u over 300 for this
change the fan clutch. get that part from the dealer.
replace the water pump and thermostat. Had the same problem.
Jose Guizar metoooo
you just have to bypass to fans I wired it straight to a toggle switch straight to your battery
So far I've checked and replaced:
- rad temp sensor (January)
- coolant temp sensor (today)
- thermostat (a month ago)
- bridge fans - both speeds working
- AC on - both fans kick in, AC is cold
- fuses inside check out
- fuses under the hood are good as well
- coolant flows in the coolant orb - I have circulation
Out of ideas. Anyone?
So what was the problem?
probably the
Check the Radiator,it MUST BE DIRTY
robably needs new radiador
Here is one that is going to be Painful.

Mine is doing the same any updates on what it could be?
