Definitely one of my favorite films and based on the novel, "I Am Legend," written by the legendary (no pun intended) Richard Matheson, who also wrote the original screenplay. Unhappy with the final results, he's credited under a different name.
The novel and film are precursors for the modern zombie apocalypse genre which is my favorite. Interestingly, Mary Shelley is cited as one of Matheson's inspirations.
Vincent Price, the Father of Horror, needs no introduction. Yet Matheson, also a Price fan, felt he was miscast. Matheson reportedly thought of Harrison Ford in the role directed by George Miller. Now THAT would be an interesting film!
If you haven't seen it, I suggest understanding it's a film of it's time and may well seem dated, or even campy. But give it a chance. Try to see the world through the narrator's eyes. The more I watch it, the more I appreciate it.

I saw this on tv back around 1969/70, I was 10 and it creeped me out, now it's kinda tame but back then it was shocking.

Ya I agree. Zero gore etc but even so the score and narration makes it feel eerie and foreboding.

Yes but a bacterial plague. The Will Smith movie is the newest and the only one to share the name of the novel.
