Yesterday, I visited Zoo Miami for the first time. I was very excited, as this zoo has been high on my "Must See" list for some time. Although I didn't get to see everything it had to offer, it certainly did not disappoint! I was more than happy with everything that I was able to see, including my most favorite animals: the elephants.
My clips of the African Elephants embody my belief in patience when it comes to filming animals, whether it be in captivity or in nature. When I first arrived at their exhibit, they were nearly out of sight, way back towards the edge of the enclosure. I walked a little down the road to watch some birds in an aviary for a few minutes before checking back in. Sure enough, they had come much closer, allowing me to get some better shots. I loved seeing them walk; there's something so majestic about their graceful and dainty but deliberate and powerful strides. Patience pays off!
My experience with the Zoo's male Asian Elephant, however, proved to be the total opposite. When I rounded the corner and passed the flora beside his exhibit, I was taken aback and absolutely exhilarated by how close he was! This video does not do the encounter justice. He was absolutely MASSIVE and I could not wrap my head around his size, even as I stood directly in front of him. Though Asian Elephants possess much smaller ears than their African counterparts, you can hear just how loud it was when this male slapped his ears against his body. It sounded like people wringing out a heavy tarp! His enormous tusks were quite impressive as well.
Elephants will never cease to impress me. They are so beautifully bizarre. They are nigh incomprehensible, with their sheer size, long "nose-arms," teeth jutting forward out of their mouths, and their fan-like ears. The very fact of their existence is incredible.
Aside: I love the design of Zoo Miami's enclosures; though they are not the most creative (and may be even a bit sparse), I love how every animal is just about eye-level with you, giving you the chance to see how big or small they truly are.
Am I the only one who love both species?
No way.
I like asian elephants because they have more proportioned ears and arching backs (instead of sloping like an african elephants). Its like seeing a mammoth in the flesh.

@@curious5887I would have to agree many features of an Indian elephant are nearly identical to the European mammoth morph having compared the skeletons of both the European mammoth and an Indian elephant bull the only difference is the tusks the rest is the same from front to back even the female skeletons match the shape and appearance of and indian elephant cow so I can say the Indian elephant and the European mammoth are the same animal.

Thats becuase they're genetically similar. Asian elephants have been used for research of their lost cousins in hopes of revival.

Weird to think that the Palaeoloxodon Namadicus was more closely related to the African elephant but looked more like an Asian elephant.

Which one is which?
The African Elephants feature in the segment from 0:00 through to 2:46. The Asian Elephants are featured from that point forward. The biggest physical difference between the two species is their ear size; African Elephants' ears are very large (bigger than their heads), while Asian Elephants' are much smaller in comparison. There are a bunch of other differences, but that's the most obvious one. :)

@Timothy O'Mara agree with you, I visited zoos but the in Zoo Miami the enclosure is so big is a perfect habitat for them. But in others zoos is not the same, the animals are not even touching the grass!!! Zoo MIami is a great visit
Found one 76 years old in a national elephant park in Thailand, she's well over 80 by now.
They will be butchered for tusks. Better to live a longer life than WALK !!

In some cases, Elephants get plenty of exercise, but in the wild they only travel that far in search of food. There are captive Elephants that have reached over 80 years of age, also.

They aren't. They are smaller and weigh less, also much less aggressive.
@@razatiger22 size doesn't matter here. The structure of Asiatic elephant is such that it can apply huge amount of force on something. It's trunk is more muscular and powerful than African elephant
