    In case anyone needs it, here's a couple notes just for clarification, since I was also really confused the first time I started reading into this stuff:
    > That Ableton Push 2, for anyone who's wondering, is what's commonly referred to as a "Control Surface." Definitely not absolutely necessary, as Mult already said, but it's considered a good *workflow* option for those of us who find moving a mouse around to be a tedious waste of time. If you don't wanna constantly move the cursor around to select or solo or arm tracks, change volumes/levels, move virtual knobs with your mouse, etc etc, this is basically what a control surface does. It's a hardware extension of your "in-the-box" (software) controls. They come in a ridiculous variety of forms, and choosing one seems to generally depend on your DAW of choice.
    --> Some keyboards or midi controllers also have some functionality like this, a-la the knobs at the top of that Native Instruments keyboard shown at around 6:00.
    "Workflow" is the key word here. It's really more about convenience than anything else.
    > The audio interface is also useful for getting sounds *into* the box. (into the computer.) Notice those XLR inputs on the front of the focusrite? That's where you'd throw in a decent microphone, turn on the phantom power if you need it, and get sound in that way as well. (I'm pretty sure there are also a couple 1/4" in/out jacks on the back, too.)
    These also come in ridiculous variety, and your control surface or even midi keyboard/controller might even have some interface functionality, depending on the SKU. Midi ins-outs, onboard mixing, etc.
    A midi interface falls under this category as well, if you need an alternative way to hook up a (compatible) keyboard/controller or offboard modular synths, etc, but that's something I'm still reading into and can't really say too much about just yet.
    Audio production is a wild world....the functionality on all these devices overlap in so many ways it's almost impossible to tell the difference sometimes.

  • @Noxoreos
    @Noxoreos 8 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    Actually an audio interface makes a big difference considering audio latency. I'd say that piece is even more important than a MIDI device like a keyboard or so, because as you said, there is already a way to input MIDI data using the computer keyboard. Velocity can still be changed afterwards. About the layout: asdfg and so on are white keys, we-tyu-op are black keys. So the layout is basically the same as on some small MIDI keyboard.

    I don't know if you don't know this, or if it just escaped you.
    It's not really about mixing at high volumes with headphones you need a soundcard for. It's if you soundcard can't power your headphones enough so that you can reach mixing volumes even at the max. Or rather if you have to turn the volume to max, the sound will still be distorted, so even if Max is enough, if you have to go there, you need a better souncard for your headphones. And most "pro" headphones will need Max volume on most computers.
    And of course, there aren't many if any mics that are even ok, that can be connected directly to the typical input on a computer (if it has one), so for recording vocals or other instruments, a soundcard is needed.
    For someone that doesn't even know the basics of piano playing a piano-keyboard is not necessary. Pad options, and there are cheaper ones than the Push 2, could be much more useful. And if they play another instrument, the inputs offered on a soundcard is much more important than a piano-keyboard. I play the piano, at least a little, and if I could get only one device to play notes in to the computer, I would probably go for one of the good budget pad solutions rather than a piano-keyboard.

    This was a great video, thanks for making it.
    I'm currently on the fence of if I want to start making music or not. I mean, I do want to start but this is a pretty expensive thing to get into- or no- from your video it's not expensive to get into but to get all the sounds you want so you have the option to make music with more variety, then it gets more expensive. Either way I've played piano all my life so I've got one ready and waiting for this- just have a converter cable on the way. Also I used to work in video production so my computer is up-to-snuff since I believe rendering out complex VFX and the like would be more taxing than making music, but maybe not?
    I don't know, hopefully when my wire gets here I have a good first experience with FL studio and am able to actually do what I'm looking to do with it. I'm kinda glad you said all you really need is a mouse and keyboard though, I was legit going through amazon for some of the stuff you were talking about here. I still need a good mic though for samples of me booty clapping as a base line, I hear that red box you dropped makes the biggest difference in audio inputs rather than what it gives back to your headphones.

    Audio interfaces are also designed to operate with lower latency (lag) than the soundcard you have in your computer. When you're layering tracks in a DAW, or listening to the output as you play, audio interfaces can make that a better experience. Better audio interfaces have lower latency in general.

    To make most electronic music, WITHOUT using a PC or MAC (some of us still like hardware only!), at the very least you will need a hardware sequencer, a sampler and a synth (or any combination of these, such as will be in an Electribe),. You could then consider a MIDI keyboard, Plug each of 'em in to a mixer, using standard cables, and from that you'll be outputing straight to a a high quality recorder - you could, e.g., pick up a second hand Boss BR600 for around 60 on the auc sites. Optional extras include extra effects units. The good news is that even if you part with the best part of a thou, with careful choice of used equipment, you will be able to recoup your costs later, should circumstancs change and you need to sell. BTW, the DAC he uses above will be completely unnecessary if you're using a h/w setup. Nor are monitors strictly necessary whlie you have high end headphones. You will need excellent headphones, partly because you won't be able to hear all the nuances of the music you create, if you use average phones. hth

    I think all this really depends on what type of music that you want to play - and wether you want to/can play it live. Playing 16th notes can be tricky - and straneous, and stressful... So for certain types of music, and/or people, sequencers can be the only way of making the type of music that one wants... And then a soundcard would come before a keyboard... For people with enough interest for music, i highly recommend "Reaktor" from Native Instruments (200 euro), and the "Bome MIDI Translator Pro" software (69 euro), which can make a very limited MIDI controller thousands of times more powerful (it can take a decent amount of work, depending on your controller and goals - but its usually a one time thing that you go through, and then its set up)... I used it with my Akai Advance 25 keyboard, with only 8 knobs, and a bunch of buttons and pads, which i used as "shift buttons" for the 8 knobs - making the keyboard able to control over 1500 parameters, on each of 6 tracks..! Theres usually a maximum of 128 "cc commands" on each of the 16 MIDI channels - which gives a maximum of controlling 2048 parameters, no matter how awesome your controller is. With Bome, you can create "virtual midi ports", and use the full spectrum of MIDI information, on several different tracks.

    The point of an external sound card is to eliminate electro static interference that's produced by the components in your computer and provide your vocals or MIDIs a clearer and higher end result free of static noise.

    • @lloyd165
      @lloyd165 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most people who buy a soundcard really have that written in stone but to be honest mobos are pretty good at eliminating noise on their own. I have midrange mobo and tbh I hear practically nothing different when i have a card vs when i dont. If you're tight on cash or just bedroom producing, soundcards really arent that big of a deal.

    • @MrMOGHammer
      @MrMOGHammer 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      not at all. The main point of External sound card in music production is all about latency. Of course high quality audio interface (from focusrite scarlett and up) will help with the electrically induced noise (if you plug a guitar make sure you use top quality cables, that actually are shielded to cut off noise).

    interfaces do a whole lot more than just headphones stuff, they record mics for vocals, and guitars and some keyboards, and good interfaces can help with latency which is basically the time thats past between what you played and what you heard, low latency is best!! he probably should've mentioned that lmao

    For audio interface I would humbly suggest the Behringer U-Phoria umc404hd, it is on par or cheaper ($100) with the Focusrite, but has 4 inputs, and 4 outputs, whereas the Focusright here only has 2 inputs and a quite a bit less control (like pass-thru monitoring, gain pad for all four channels if you don't need as much pre-amp, separate controls for headphones and main out, which is handy if you have both plugged it). The behringer also have much more diverse selection of output jacks, and also does midi in and out, if you need that for whatever reason. I honestly feel like it is a steal at $100

    I think speakers are more important than headphones. Everything sounds good on headphones when mixing but you need the speakers to really get good quality. If you can get good sound out of your speakers your headphones will sound good by default but not the other way around. I only use headphones when I do reference mixing or recording. If you don't use speakers you will get super bad mixes that only sound good on headphones.

    I like you, but you got the description for what an Audio Interface does partly incorrect. An Audio Interface takes inputs (from microphones and guitars) and converts and amplifies their analog signal into a digital signal, then sends that digital to the computer (A->D conversion). That is their main purpose, though most Audio Interfaces have Headphone jacks, those are mostly to monitor the level of the inputs without the delay of converting and sending the inputs to the computer. Of course, things evolve over time, so more features are added.

    • @BoDiddly
      @BoDiddly 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, "Sound Cards" are historically not the same as "Audio Interfaces". Sound Cards generally have some sort of signal generator like a synthesizer (Modern ones have Digital Signal Processors) and are used to create sounds. Back in my day, you had to buy a separate Sound Card and plug it into your computer in order to get sounds like music, stereo or midi. Modern computers have Sound Cards built into the motherboard and thus it is not necessary to purchase one to generate music (although you can buy an external one similar to buying an Audio Interface).
      So, basically Audio Interface = Sound converter... Sound Card = Sound Generator.

    so far the only major benefit I see to using midi is to record notes of a piano and allows one to replay piano notes onto a different piano (like the old days when you saw the punch card equipment that allowed the piano keys to move /play without the person playing the music. So I know there must be much more to midi because there so much to it with synthezisers , mixers ,...etc as well so its a confusing thing to me.

    I am hopeless Luddite , for some reason inspired to wrap my head around recording . But watching this video , I am 5x more confused than before, and I didn't think that was possible .
    Nothing about sticking actual music into compuer ? Plugs for electric instruments , mics for accoustic ? Or even a vocal ?
    Soundcard ? He keeps waving around a Scarlet , calling it a Soundcard . What little I have absorbed from my more knowledgeable friends , they're telling me those type of things are an Interface . A soundcard is a card I had to get almost 20yrs ago , back when computers didn't have sound from the factory.
    What's with all the obsession with various keyboards ? While I do know a professional Keyboard player , I can't play no piano , and have no desire to record any .

    There's a difference between a DAC and an audio interface. A DAC transforms a computers digital output into analog signals for headphones and speakers. An audio interface does that AND converts several types of analog audio signals(which differ in specification between dynamic and condenser microphones, guitars, the odd 8 track cassette deck etc.) into digital signals for your computer and the DAW running therein. Here ends the lesson.
    You are, as many have said, a nutter, but as with many such people, you are nonetheless at least obliquely charming, somewhat as I might imagine Sherlock Holmes on needle days, if I were given to imagining such days.
    P.S.: You mention the Focusrite is broken. I've long had a suspicion that the 2i2 isn't nearly of the same production quality as Focusrite's more expensive models. People talking at speeds similar to you have told me there are Focusrite burial sites in New Jersey, on Staten Island, just a few kilometres outside of Shizuishan, (formerly Shizuizi) in the People's Republic of China, and of course under the Isle of Wright entirely dedicated to the 2x2 model, each hundreds of metres deep and larger in acreage than a typical pro football pitch with associated parking areas. On the other hand, I'm given to understand that high failure rate of these units, usually timed to within a few minutes of the expiry of warranty is not actually a failure, but the first intimations of consciousness awakening within the box. Students of Arrighi have suggested that having been subjected to long pain filled hours of rank musical amateurism, the 2i2 units have joined in a legless walkout against the deplorable conditions of their worksites.
    A contrarian analysis has come to light in recent months (first published simultaneously in the TLS and the NY Review) noting that these supposed failures are not a commentary on the taste of rank amateurs pretending to be music producers in their bedsits between engagements with badly shaven strangers with "birthmarks" looking suspiciously like chancres, but that against all expectations these burial sites are actually droid reanimation centres being established in anticipation of an approaching Sith attack. In appearing to fail, these units are in fact serving Queen and Country whilst joining the skill of British engineers to the rising technological troubadours of the People's Republic in an important gesture of transhumanism and righteous indignation against the clearly inferior Sith who dare threaten our very way of brewing a good cup, both at home and in the People's Republic.
    P.P.S. The term soundcard refers properly to a third party internally rail mounted audio production device meant to overcome the nauseatingly bad audio capabilities of most pc motherboards.Save for the most expensive of such devices, these cards usually fail as many of the problems inducing listener nausea have their origin in the generous supply of semi-random magnetic fields and electron leakage consequential to the most common design paradigms of motherboard, power supply and rail design in the Windows/Linux box world, probably as a result of the influence of regional Chinese Opera on the designers.As the actual signal remains pristine so long as it is passed in digital form, external DAc's and Audio Interfaces have largely supplanted sound cards save in the already deaf gaming community, for whom pristine audio is understood as skull baking volume. Artists enamoured with "video art" also continue to embrace internal sound cards, a position made reasonable by the sound reproduction quality of the typical television. Video screens that typically paired two inch "woofers" and piezo "tweeters" are finally being supplanted by 3rd party soundbars where 2 inch "woofers" are ganged in groups of 2, 4 and even six units per channel in an acoustically resonant plastic frame work designed to buzz in imitation of low frequency response. The collapse of the soundbar market in recent years is currently attributed to American and Japanese housing and the lack of alternate spaces to hang Christmas, birthday and bereavement cards other than taped to the lower edge of the primary family television -- a space typically given over to a professionally installed soundbar......
    Regardless of the result of this contretemps, I enjoyed your video.
    .

    Thanks for explaining audio interfaces. I hear people always telling others to get them but no one really said how much better they are compared to the sound cards that already come on your computer. Now I know that they do improve sound but they aren't really necessary unless you want to perfect the sound. Which is good because I would rather not spend a minimum of $100 on something that won't make an instant improvement in whatever I'm doing.

      This guy didn't explain an audio interface correctly. On top of clarity, it's going to also help in processing, it allows us to use microphones/instruments and also allows us use of studio monitors..... so an audio interface is actually, in fact, absolutely necessary for producing and recording. You can play catch up all you want tho.

      Some computers have bad soundcards.
      And if you use a good pair of headphones, chances are that the built in soundcard can't power them properly, so they don't sound like they should.
      If you don't really need any connections, there are cheaper external soundcards out there, that are not Audio interfaces for studio work, but that are still better than what is built in.

    Nah this is the proper order: 1. Computer 2. DAW 3. Monitors 4. Microphone (and mic pre if you mean business) 5. Audio interface (spent $1000 on an SPL Crimson 3 here. It bears heavy on sound quality that's why the pros are willing to fork out $4000 on a Prism sound Titan 6. headphones 7. Midi keyboard . For me though, I spend more money on mic, mic pre, interface and then monitors in that order. A computer is no brainer cos you know you need huge RAM and smooth ROM. DAW is just a matter of choice
    ...and you do need the right software to get the right sound you know.
    on the flipside, can you send that MacBook Pro?...i can repair it you know
