I live about a half mile from Renmore Barracks and have attended Mass at the adjacent church, celebrated by Fr Murphy. He is very well liked as he is a very holy, sincere and affable man. He was lucky he was driving as the car restricted the attacker's access to him. The thug clung to Fr Murphys car as he drove through the gate but he was aided and protected by soldiers. The police are investigating all angles. The whole community is in utter shock and all of us are thinking of and praying for Fr Murphy whom I actually know.

Which, from the sounds of things, are the ones who assisted the Padre. Obviously I don’t know exactly who assisted or the exact details, but I’d imagine they would be best situated to respond.

Paul is one of the nicest human beings anyone would have the pleasure of meeting. I served in that barracks and he was always genuinely happy to meet people, talk to people, and counsel people when needed. How any human being would draw a weapon or have an intent to harm that man is beyond belief. By this attack, not only was our army outrightly attacked, but also our faith, and a good man was injured because of it. I really, truly hope something is done to prevent further occurrences of these actions on our armed forces and civilians.

Army Personnel should be Armed with side arms when not on Active Armed Duty . The Irish Defence Forces are Highly Expeirienced in Security and They are used as Peace Keepers with the United Nations and They are Held in the Highest Regard By All who Serve with Them .

So, unfortunately, he was an ideal victim for this attacker and he is extremely lucky that he was so close to the gate, as there is a gate guard present on the gate and also, there was an armed guard duty not far from the gate. Which, from the sounds of things, are the ones who assisted the Padre. Obviously I don’t know exactly who assisted or the exact details, but I’d imagine they would be best situated to respond.
