    The reason Patrick makes a bunch of references to Trump is because in the book, Patrick is obsessed with Donald Trump, which is why he dresses exactly like Trump in the 90s with the trench coat, slicked hair and red power tie as a business man in Manhatten

    • @eugeneodonnell4680
      @eugeneodonnell4680 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Exactly. Except it takes place 1987-88. All the cultural references are from that period. Trump had burst onto the scene in those years styling himself as a business genius and was the model for the Wall street yuppies. He had the expensive Brooks Brothers wardrobe and usually wore pinstripe suits.

    • @My-Name-Isnt-Important
      @My-Name-Isnt-Important 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@eugeneodonnell4680 Trump has never worn a pinstripe suit, pinstripe suits are what stock exchange Wall Street yuppies wear. Trump and most of the big name wall street firms tend to not like each other. Donald has always been cautious and even antagonistic towards them due to their practices. It's not about making deals or building something tangible, it's about money manipulation and tracking trends.
      Trump's fame blew up in the late 70's. By the late 80's he was an extremely well known entrepreneur within NY and fairly famous outside of business circles too. Several buildings in NY and down the North Atlantic coast had been built by Trump, which is where his deep connections to labor unions was cemented. He also heavily gave to charities in NY and Chicago, which is why so many liked him for so many decades.
      He famously was the main one to get Mike Tyson back into professional boxing after prison. Even today Tyson is very appreciative of Trump helping him, and still regularly spends time with the Trump family. The character Patrick Bateman is everything Trump isn't.

    If you see mostly content of men shaming people at the gym, that's likely just the algorithm. Similarly every thing like that I've seen has been from women. The algorithm has likely realised that men will react more to women doing it, and women will react more to men doing it.
    I don't know the real details, but keep in mind the content you see isn't representative of reality. Most people can go to the gym multiple times a week for decades and will never encounter a single person acting like that. You're far far more likely to encounter the opposite.
    If you keep getting content like that suggested then it's because you're reacting to it. Remember the algorithm only cares about you heavily reacting, it doesn't current have enough compute assigned to tell whether you liked or disliked it.

    What you saw at 38:00 was a psychopath encountering another psychopath. The lady owns that apartment, and she knows the price of it would plummet if people found out a lot of people were killed in it, so she covers it up, paints the whole place and then tries selling it as if nothing ever happened. When Patrick asked about Paul she got suspicious so she asked him about the supposed ''ad'' to test if he was the killer.
    When she tells him ''i think you should go now'' and ''don't come back'' it's basically her way of saying ''i know it was you and it's best if you stay away from this place so i can sell it''.

      In the complete scene at 17:56 you see two versions one with the trail of blood the other without the obliviousness of the night concierge and his indifference another clue that its in his head and not real imo he has fantasies and uses fruit or meats and bone as substitutes. The speaking out loud with his reflection in the mirror, the ATM messaging, the absurdity of the explosions with the police and old lady, the security guard death in one scene and the other he pulls out a pen as the true reality of what he has in his possession. As for the flat i can only imagine he wrecked it and clearly no bodies were found and the assumption the property owner was an accessory to the fact is not based in reality.
      My theory he was using cranberry juice and was acting out the fantasies of dispatching those in his life. It reached a point in his life all the pressure, and delusions, illusions the psychosis, insufferableness and narcissim he managed to convince himself that he was a psychopath.
      However he was merely acting out his fantasies and lost touch with reality due to the illegal and legal highs and his desires and daily battles of one-upmanship which to him was everything because he wanted to fit in so badly. Other than his clique, outsiders confused him with someone else and when they did refer to him in the past tense it was with a dismissive and mocking tone as a dork and a loser a boring spinless lightweight.
      And yet his fiance reminds him that he hates his job despite his obessession to fit in and inferiority complex.
      Was Bateman's circle the outsiders that were never really recognised by the top crew that everyone envied, adored and copied? And was he the dweeb of that very same forgettable crew that always wanted to fit in with the in crew the top crew ?
      We never knew what the presribed meds were for or were they used to hide the fact that it was nothing more than a container to store his illegal highs.
      This reminds me of the insular and cut throat world of finance, the hedge funds, bankers, brokers and high echelons of Wall Street and Big Pharma.

    • @Verasoul
      @Verasoul หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SedriqMiersTo add to that, his fiance said that his dad owns the company. That would also influence his inferiority complex and need to fit in to prove that he isn't there simply out of nepotism. That also adds to why the other guys speak of him so poorly. They just see him as a daddy's boy.
      Another thing. The only one of the group that actually recognized and respected him was a man that he not only was betraying by cheating on his fiance with his girlfriend, but he also was the source of his secret affection which is also emasculation in such times and that lifestyle.

    • @pirbird14
      @pirbird14 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@SedriqMiersThe concierge ignores the blood because rich people can smooth anything over with enough money. He doesn't't want to know what it is and convinces himself that maintenance staff will deal with it. If he just looks in Bateman's general direction and not directly at the flor, he doesn't have to acknowledge it. This is also the reason the bartender doesn't acknowledge his rudeness. Obviously, The ATM machine didn't tell him to feed it a cat. This scene shows that Bateman's connection to reality has begun to shred. The book makes it clear that he did do most of this stuff.

    since there seems to be a misunderstanding in the comments and elsewhere as to what "sigma" means. alpha's lead, beta's follow, sigma's have no desire to lead and no inclination to follow. so they do their own thing. neither this bateman character, nor 98% of those who identify as sigma's, actually are. some wish they were alpha's, which means they DO have desire to lead, they just cant find any followers. and those who follow trends of any sort, obviously follow. it seems like a simple enough issue, yet few in this society properly grasp it. a beta, who long's to be an alpha, cant be a sigma. and killing people doesnt constitute "doing your own thing". there is nothing whatsoever about being sigma in this film, and those who believe otherwise completely miss various points.

    You keep using the term 'sigma-males.' This is a commentary on how the enormously wealthy, nepotistic stockbroker yuppies of the era are all actually hedonistic psychos with zero empathy for others. It's a satire of class, not gender, especially considering the portrayal of Evelyn and Courtney are about as narcissistic and fake and empty as he is. Though the twist in this story is that Bateman's psychopathy is ramped up to being a literal murderous cannibal, the point remains.
    10:57 - 11:25 Of course you agree with it; it's the kind of rhetoric every celebrity and social climber has used for the past 50 years, and the people saying it are just as sincere as Bateman. Bret Easton Ellis wrote this novel after hanging out with a bunch of vapid, wealthy socialites like this, and that's the kind of conversations they have; that's where his inspiration came from.
    I've always felt the fact of whether or not Patrick imagined the killings or not to be up for debate. The realtor could've been just covering up the murder to keep up the value of the property, the lawyer could've mistaken one of the other businessmen for Paul Allen, as these rich yuppies so often do throughout the film, but it ultimately doesn't change the ending either way: Patrick suffers no consequences, so he will continue to gain no self-knowledge and live an utterly fake, meaningless life.

The redpill stuff is another level of retardation, I agree with you there. At least it's my interpretation that they're different. Maybe some people say they're both redpill and sigma idk I guess someone could be both at once. Cool reaction! This definitely is a fascinating and hilarious film.
    But yeeah this whole movie is a satire on high class wall street businessmen of the 80's. Patrick Bateman is supposed to be an exaggerated personification of this type of man in that world, and the joke is that the society he's in is so shallow, superficial, materialistic and self absorbed that they cannot even see an obvious serial killer among them 😂 cos yeeah.. he's not subtle or even smart at all.
    Even when committing a murder in the stairwell of this apartment complex, no one comes out because no one cares.
    Paul Allen (Jared Leto) was definitely killed. His lawyer simply mistook someone as him. That's another consistent joke in this movie. Everyone is so self absorbed and even look the damn same with the same style of clothing and fasion.. that they mistake each other very easily. And the apartment was being repainted to be sold, that realtor was playing dumb and "subtly" implying she knows he's the killer and threatening him to leave. Again materialistic gain is much more important to people in this society. With all these people covering sh*t up, it wouldn't be a surprise that many other people are serial killers. They all just happen to target people who don't matter. The whole detective plot all started because Patrick f*cked up by killing someone who matters.
    But yeeah its a really entertaining movie.

    The sigma male thing started as a joke but then morons took it over unironically. Ignoring the fact that people were using it to poke fun at certain types of people. Not surprising, considering the types seek validation from one another to continue their idiocy and behavior.

    Some other good real life ones are Genghis Khan , Alexander the Great , Julius Caesar all killed into the millions and all thought their cultures and their ways of life was better than their neighbors.
