    probably helpful to know the stop codons too: UAA, UGA, UAG. I remember it like this. U Are Annoying , U Go Away, U Are Gone.

    I love how you also have a playlist for money management from premed to attending. This is exactly the type of stuff i look for and focus on too glad to see it coming in a playlist along with high yield MCAT

    Hey everyone! If you like this video, feel free to like and subscribe-and perhaps most importantly, share with others taking the MCAT! If I could share one piece of information only to anyone taking the MCAT, it would be the information in this video. 😁

    If you haven’t already, you should make an updated video of MCAT requirements for this application cycle! There’s a lot of conflicting info about it

      MedCat ✔️ Some videos are showing the protocol mid-pandemic as far as the shortened test and everything, while others haven’t acknowledged that the test length is back to normal now but we’ll have to wear out mask and stuff!

    Anyone else do much better drawing/writing things out over and over again to learn over flashcards?

    • @medcatmcat
      @medcatmcat  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! I usually use flashcards to remind myself to draw them out, then check myself using the back of the flashcard.

    I thought D and L only applied to sugars and their their respective hydroxide positions, it can also apply to amino acids?

    • @medcatmcat
      @medcatmcat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, it also applies to amino acids. The D and L configurations actually predate the R and S system, which is more common in organic chemistry (note that R/S does NOT correspond to D/L, though they often correlate). The good news is that you just need to memorize that L-amino acids are what humans use to make proteins! No need to be able to take a look at an amino acid and classify it as D or L for the MCAT!
      Here's an article that explains a bit of the history as well as helps you understand D and L: www.masterorganicchemistry.com/2017/05/24/d-and-l-sugars/

    • @jacobgrimm7540

      All AA chiral except glycine which only has a hydrogen as an R group

    • @medcatmcat
      @medcatmcat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed! I go over this in my nonpolar amino acids review: th-cam.com/video/IwlbueoXQv4/w-d-xo.html

    • @medcatmcat
      @medcatmcat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed! Though I would wager that if they ask about the alpha carbon, it will be in the context of D/L. Also, if you remember how to assign R/S, you probably shouldn't need to memorize this anyways!

      What do you mean by "not need to know" ?

  • @rahulburma2677
    @rahulburma2677 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Im so confused, in the video you say that the human genome codes for 20 amino acids but I was told that there are 9 essential amino acids that the body cannot make itself. So, wouldn't it mean that the body only codes for 11 amino acids?

    • @chris-vw3mr
      @chris-vw3mr ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your genome codes for all 20 amino acids to make proteins. Your body can make 11 of those amino acids on its own through metabolic processes. The other 9 need to come from your diet so that they can be incorporated into proteins coded for by your genome. They're still coded for, but you cannot make them yourself.

    • @medcatmcat
      @medcatmcat  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I second what Chris said! When making a protein, we have 20 building blocks (amino acids) at our disposal. We get 9 of those from only outside sources. 11 of those we have the capability of coding separate enzymes (again, using amino acids to make those enzymes, which are proteins) that can make amino acids from other molecules.
