I recommend that you study the history of how soccer spread in the US. 50 years ago, soccer was unknown in the US. The product was not the problem; it was popular worldwide. They started with the children. They made it fun for the children. They did not demand the children's game to be like adult's game, lasting 90 minutes with an intermission in between. Classical music can do something similar. You can have children or teenager concerts. You do not need to pack those concerts with long pieces, like concerto. In fact, no young children can handle a concerto. And you need to understand that many adults do not want to know the live history of Chopin or Stravinski. They do not want to learn the structure of the piece. They just want to be entertained. You will certainly get some people interested and want to know more later. You may have to split classical music into different sectors, like the retail or automobile industry. That is why retail industry has Walmart and Nieman Marcus. They cater to different market sectors and offer different products. Classical music certain has enough products to satisfy the different sectors. Same case for the automobile industry. There are people who buy corrolla and people who buy F150. You need different cars for those two sectors.
Fantastic mindset! I couldn’t agree more with everything said here!
I wish more arts organizations had this mindset! Thank you for your work in helping arts orgs learn and evolve.
Thanks so much!
