Nice truck !! I use to work for a propane company and we used Chevrolet C65 conventional cabs as well as cab overs. All of them ran 366 V-8s and 5 speed transmissions with split axles. We converted them to run on propane since we hauled propane. Originally we ran them off of the large mounted tank use for delivery purposes, never had to worry about running out of fuel. Engines would be rebuilt at 400,000 miles but usually showed little wear.

I'm so glad you commented. I have an IH Loadstar 4x4 of the same vintage and im converting the 345 to propane but had concern. Did the mpg drastically drop or how was the performance?

@@dustinpollard6237 Mileage decrease is about 10% due to the fact that propane has a lower BTU content as compared to gasoline. If I remember correctly the IH 345 V8 had some issues with backfiring due to the firing order of the cylinders. Older engines designed to run on leaded gasoline need to have hardened valve seats installed , Stellite valves are also recommended, This is because propane used as a motor fuel is a dry vapor and provides no lubrication for these areas and it will over time result in valve recession, how soon this becomes a problem depends on the condition of the engine. Also if the engine is high mileage it is not advisable to convert it to propane without a complete rebuild. Propane burns very clean and a bit hotter than gasoline as there is no fuel vaporization taking place in the engine. Over time all of the built up carbon and other deposits will be burned away and that is when the problems usually show up. Engines properly built and set up to run propane run for a very long time, oil is not diluted and there is no carbon build up on the heads or cylinders or valves. We often ran inline six cylinder pickups for 500, 000 miles and they were still in good running condition when they were retired. Good luck with your build, sounds like a fun project.

I still run those C6500s here on the farm. 4-5 MPG, at best. Seriously need to add an over drive gear box and change over to later style fuel injection. I have an extra chassis that if I get time to convert, would make a good trailer puller for hauling to the tractor shows.

I have a 1979 Chevy C70 with a 366 gas five-speed manual and two speed Eaton rear end running 22-5 tires. It is set up as a dump truck the overspeed light comes on around 50 miles an hour. The fastest I've ever had it going was 52 and I don't believe it will go any faster. Did they use different ring and pinions in these trucks?
