I have a 9 year old who is learning how to ride park, I'm 36, been skiing for 30 years, never done a 180. I go and try, and I'm proud of the fact that I know nothing, I laugh when I fall, I can't ride a rail without falling. BUT, my 9 year old laughs with me, and him watching me fail, and me being ok with failing, since it's part of the process, it took all the tension off him! Now he laughs when he falls, gets back up and tries again. Be a role model, and show other people your perseverance, that is more admirable then doing a 180 or a rail. The guys riding park, know this. After 2 days, I can now ride switch a lil and do 180s both left and right and so can he! We even tried 360s, and he "earned" ice cream for it. I see other riders scared to try out of fear of failing, and I joke with em about how bad I am. All these guys doing the tricks were once there. I feel bad when I see people watch and not try, I know the feeling, I did that for decades. The guys in the park cheer me on, laugh with me, and give me tips.... Be humble and enjoy the process of learning, this guy is right, just start small with the basics, once you get a 180 down, that lil bit of confidence pushes you to do more. But for the life of me, I fall every time on a rail and can't figure it out, and just laugh at myself, but one day... I won't fall! See ya out there!

The social thing is soooo true. I'm a florida boy and went snowboarding for the first time at age 16. Got pretty good pretty fast, third day of vacation and I was going up the mountain and down alone. I found a group of 20 something, longhaired, snowboard dudes, and they were the nicest ppl I ever met. They took me down double black diamond and literally showed me the slowest best way to do it, then all the faster ways. Those guys literally made the whole trip for me. Ended up shredding every trail on the mountain with them (they shredded, I cartwheeled down a couple of em lol). Hands down best vacation of my life.

I really like the gym comparison because it's true in so many ways. So many people are afraid of the gym because of the same exact reasons as the park. You're not gonna feel like you belong at first but when you start putting in the work you'll slowly start feeling like you belong.

I don't ride park (but I really wish I did) I think because since I don't know how to do any tricks or really even hit jumps it's kinda embarrassing to ride the park when everyone else there is doing 360s and 720s and I can't even hit a jump
Plus everyone on the chair can see you

This was pretty good and I recognize the three obstacles. Nearly all park riders are helpful and supportive. Most will probably not even notice you or pay attention, because they’re doing their own thing. I hit the park every time I ski, and I’m 61. Everybody in our local parks knows me and my age, and I go and work on tricks. Some days are better than others. I get props for sure. But when it comes to park, nobody cares. Everyone is focused on their own progression. I wait in line with kids 1/3 my age and take my turn and nobody notices. If they do notice, thry always want to help or give props. Park is hard, physically demanding, and mentally demanding. It’s also very personal, because no one knows what’s going on in your head but you. I recommend park to anyone, but especially older skiers. Go after the park with all your heart and soul, and it will change your mind and body. How do you manage the fear? By gradual progression and reps-thousands of reps. Hit the park as much as you can and it gets easier. A quote from Tom Wallisch.

Speaking as an older guy getting into park, one big thing that intimidates people is that one time when they tried a trick, crashed and got hurt. I remember landing on a rail on my shins as a 16 year old and I never hit another rail after that because "it wasn't worth it." I tried throwing a 540 of a park jump and almost knocked myself out, and from then on I didn't want to spin on park jumps anymore. My problem back then was that I had no idea about what I was doing and no concept of progression. Kids nowadays have TH-cam videos for everything from 50-50 on a rail to corked 540s, and it's a LOT safer if you know what you're supposed to do before you try a new trick, and how to work up to it instead of just trying to send it because the other guys in the park can do it. Now I'm wishing I wouldn't have taken a 15 year break because my body gets hurt easier than when I was in my 20s, but finally I'm starting to throw spins off of jumps and hit rails again.
The other big part is being intimidated because beginners don't actually know how big or how difficult a feature is, they just have no experience to gauge it by. So explaining to beginners that they should STAY AWAY from big jumps and rails, to start from the absolute smallest jump and hit it 100 times until it's comfortable before they move on to the next size jump, and to understand which rails are easier or harder than others, that's really important for them to know so they aren't intimidated.

Great video! I am usually not afraid of the park, in fact every place I go I try to check out one of the parks, I am definitely not a park skier, I tried to hit a jump and fell and have fallen after riding a box! I love the butter boxes, but sometimes I fall. I tried a flat down box at the end of ski season and it was fun. I will admit that some of the park features do intimidate me and get a little afraid to do some of it because I have the fear of getting hurt real bad. Anyway, the locals at Seven Springs were real nice to me when I went into one of the terrain parks that was a little more advanced and was the only one opened on that half of the resort and these guys I asked if there were any butter boxes and they said no, but they encouraged me to do this curved box and I almost did it, but chickened out.

This is such a good video. People bash gapers so much for going off the lips of rails and stuff. But didn't pretty much all of us do that at some point? We all were there at some point. Also, I have yet to meet someone through Instagram, or in the park that's not a nice person. People in the park are super chill which is something that other activities/sports lack. Team sports? Everyone hates eachother pretty much. Skiing? Everyone's super chill and down to earth.

    • @TheBagOTricks
      @TheBagOTricks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I agree with this other than hitting the side of lips, that's a quick way to get park riders to dislike you. Treat/ride the park as it's supposed to be ridden, and no worries!

The Bag o' Tricks I know that hitting the sides of the lips is how to get hated on, but if the park scene wants to expand, we need to tell them in a nice way rather than a mean way some park etiquette. That's what I'm trying to get at.

I've been skiing for a while but mostly on vacation at resorts, rarely touching the terrain park. This season I decided I wanted to really grow as a skier, and learn how to ride the park, so I have committed to making the hour drive to my local mountain most weekends. I did so today and I was frankly surprised by how incompetent I was. I was able to hit most smaller jumps with ease and I could straight line boxes, but other than that I wasn't able to do much. I am a goal oriented person so I was wondering what you think some good goals I should set for myself to accomplish daily, weekly, and season long would be. I think a few things I want to accomplish by the end of the season are; be able to ride boxes and rails, be able to consistently do a shifty, be able to do basic grabs, and be able to ride reverse. Do you think this is realistic? What would you suggest?

I think one of the biggest hurdles to jump (pun intended) into the park scene was not giving an eff what others think. It seems that parks are always under a ski lift. I always thought people are just staring at me fail (they are). This is where not giving an eff comes into play. I'll tell you this, though, once you overcome that feeling of being watched, the feeling after stomping a trick is so so so nice.

The best way to be able to take big slams is going to the gym and working out. Its also a pretty good idea to buy some rollers and stuff like that and do stretches before heading out to the mountain. It really does help. If i look back at footage of myself falling from when i was maybe 15-16 around that time i got hurt from fairly small slams but nowadays i can take massive slams and not get hurt. And btw the point of doing the stretches is to increase how flexible your muscles are, but there are probably lots of videos on the internet explaining this much better.

I took my then 10-year-old daughter to the park for the first time last year. We weren't very good but could do small jumps, boxes and are learning to ski switch.
I was a little worried but quickly figured out that a lot of people weren't all that much more skilled than we are.
I'm more worried about trashing the bases on our skis than anything else.

Started getting into park this season. Tried my first rail last week and racked my shins and scorpioned. It sucked but I still want to keep going at it since that pretty much the worst that can happen. It did put me out for a week though

I would have to agree with everything you're saying, it's fun to ride with some beginners, but at the same time I like riding with people at or above my skill level so I can push myself, that means that beginners might also like riding with more skilled riders so they can also push themselves, it's all a balancing game :)

I got comfortable with rails and small jumps in my backyard as a kid then when I took it to the mountain, I had the confidence to excel. So if you have a hill around your home to practice on, I’d recommend you do that. Also its easy to build a homemade rail or box. Just google it

Awesome video. I'm the 30 year old haha. I tried some park when I was in my teens, never got great but would go for smaller hits and spin 180s, and ride boxes (not rails) straight on and off. Still ride my twin tips, but have shied away from the park since then. Would love to go back.

When i started to learn 180° and 360° i had my bindings to 5kg hevier than me or so.. so when i didnt land a 180 or a 360 straight up perfect, i would fall because of the pressure on the bindings when i landed a little too much on the nose or the tail, its a good way to perfection your rotation (my opinion).

When i started with freeskiing (15 yrs ago) and going to parks, I never felt intimidated by the park, but more those „over-cool“ people in fancy equipment and „over-cool“ behaviors looking at you and judging like you are something lower then them cause you can‘t do cool tricks yet, nor you don‘t have all this fancy stuff that they do......
Never appeared really natural to me. So i ended up sending backcountry stuffs more then going to parks cause it felt way more free and peaceful.
Edit: forgot to mention I started in parks like Laax or Stubai where top people did their training since ever and maaaany people were riding anyways.... i worked as slope patrol for a couple years so basically could ride for free where I wanted.
But in those big parks there was/is always some type of „showing off“ your equipment, behavior etc.... a bit too materialistic and superficial for my taste...
still, parks like Laax are a dream and do deserve their awards for the best park worldwide. If it‘s not too crowded I love to go there. But if there are too many people, then the ski area is big enough to find a nice backcountry kicker spot.
Built it, get some friends, buy a one way lift ticket the next day and chill and jump there 🙌🏼.

I agree with you, the parks are awesome. The thing is, I am able to do all of the big jumps, small jumps. Jumping is not the problem. I thought, you know what. I'm going to be practising a 360. Literally the first time I tried I snapped all of the muscles in my knee. Had surgery about 2 years ago and I can finally ski again this year. (I hope). So yeah, moral of the story, don't be afraid but be careful!

I tried riding park for the first time a few days ago and everything was going well; I only took ramps and jumps, but I landed great every time. The layout of the park itself is what didn't work out for me. I hit this jump that was very small and easy, but there was another jump two or three yards away from it onto a rail, so I overshot the first jump and ended up slamming my leg into the rail by accident and denting the edge of my snowboard. Luckily I didn't break any bones, but I did pull a muscle in my leg. Plan your run before you do it.

I dont ride the park because frankly I don't have anyone to ride the park with, but the point you made about park skiers being personable people is so true. Always have great convos with park skiers on the lifts. I've ran into a ton of assholes on the mountain, none of them shred park, none of them are good, most of them are from Jersey.

I ski in southern Ontario and there always seems to be the mom that brings there 2 year olds that have never skied before into the park and ski it like a normal run. They always end up cutting people off and going right behind jumps . I try to tell them to try to be safe in the park and they always get pissed off . Wut should I do

Me over 30 trying to slide the smallest rail at my local park on the 2nd attempt: tears AC joint and breaks thumb.
I think the message in the video is good but if you're not a conditioned athlete you can definitely hurt yourself easily. Especially for older riders, get yourself a padded shirt or shorts, it's a lot less expensive then an injury and they make some pretty lightweight and comfortable stuff nowadays.
