Versatus is my favourite snare here, but I still prefer the Black Widow, from the previous Black Panther line. The Black Widow drum kit, is one of the best I’ve heard and prefer it to much more expensive kits.
I think Matt's snare drum would look and sound better without all the vents. I respect the fact it's his drum and many will like it but I find often drums sound and play better without vents at all. Dunnett snare's (my favourite!) have an adjustable vent, which I keep closed most of the time. It makes a very small difference. I like the build up of air in a drum, and like some ring. The Wraith sounds too dry for my taste, as a result of all the vents. The Versatus is a nice design but wish it was black. A drum this versatile should have a had a versatile colour. Black will correspond with any kit. It's very nice the finish he chose but that colour will not blend with many drum sets. Not a huge deal, but just a suggestion. I agree with Russ about Chris's drum - not really something I'd use as a main snare, but Chris is the boss! His sound and playing kills and I love Lamb of God so I can't criticize that one. Mapex have enough choices that everyone will find their voice. The brand is taking steps in the right direction and Russ is a tremendous representative!
Nope, but only because the people that supported him were no longer there, and that was after the passing of Joe Hibbs, so it was more about support than the equipment.
