Very, very well explained. Many people understandably feel that they need specific items and exact specifications to be successful. The fact that you focus on the core concepts and encourage innovation to achieve them is a superb teaching technique.
I was literally getting dressed to go buy pots and tubing to build a pretty complicated wicking system I saw when I noticed YOUR video. The simplicity of your way just saved me a lot of money and unnecessary trouble. Thanks, Wayne, I'm now a subscriber.
I have been watching through many self watering container videos, and I like this one the most. Simple and to the point. You make the concept easy to digest.
Thank you so much for this video! This summer I've been making 5 gallon self watering buckets for larger vegetables. I've also made 4 of these containers. I use 1 each for basils, strawberry and lettuce. The last one I use in my "green house to establish roots on cuttings! Love love love this ideal.
Yeah, if you want to use anything that can "contain" the water...go for it. I need the pitcher for other things but if you have extras sitting about, why not dice341? :) Good idea.
OneYardRevolution, Just to let you know... the link to facebook on your TH-cam page does not work. I manually search for you on facebook . I like your videos. You're doing a great job!

DSNY Prepper - Thank you for the kind words Monica, I appreciate that greatly! I hope it works out for you, please let me know how it goes! God bless you as well. :)
This looks fantastic and easy. I'm going to give it a shot. We were going to look for a little bed like this for some herbs and things and it seems a perfect, cheap solution.
woelfe - Yes it really is, and thank you so much for your kind words! Don't forget to come on back, and check out some of my other gardening videos as well. :)
I love how you just went to the store and found the items and put it together. Thanks for sharing this idea. #selfwicking #gardeningtips #containergardening
love this Idea. this way I can still plant and not have to do a big garden. I think instead of using landscape material I am going to start asking my mom an d all her business lady friends for their old stocking. I can using them for wicking and other things around the house. And instead of cutting out a hole in the container to put a clear piece in can you use clear containers instead or would they be to hot?
Deana Lynn Allen Rogers they are my fertilizers for my farm i`l will keep a couple of the does and sell the rest for now, i will probably harvest some later won`t breed them in the heat of the summer so these 2 litters is all i got till fall than i will start breeding again
Love your idea, Wayne. I was looking for a simple teaching project and this is perfect. My kiddos can make the containers to grow our salads in this summer. We will have fun finding our containers and setting up the growing beds. Thanks for your video.
our grocery sells strawberries in clear plastic containers which can be used in the wicking chamber. Holes are already there. This is a good way to recycle them. Good video, Wayne.
Hi beautiful soul, thank you so much for your explanations and dedication. l love planting plants and seeds myself and looking forward to start some selfwatering pots like you did. You are a very nice creative person. I like your way of thinking. I love you. Greetings from Morocco.
Great Video, Thanks. For watering you could just stick a kitchen funnel inbetween the 2 containers to easily add water without having to lift the inner container.
Thank you Willows Garden, let me know how it works for you. I've planted lettuce and a turnip in the middle of the big one and they're all doing really awesome. I'm curious to see if the turnip will be able to mature or not but I think it will. :)
That is great, hope the turnip does well. I am going today to get a couple of things to do this with, but I have landscape fabric that I will use, hoping it works.
One of the simplest self watering garden systems I've seen. No need to buy some fancy over priced system. ***** shows you how to do it yourself, very inexpensively too.

Good chance that would help boyinblue823! I'm sorry you're having issues with your lettuce man. Do you have them planted in the ground and all that? Let me know if I can help in any way brotha!
I dont know if this makes sense but they are in cups and I was watering w/ a spray bottle. Im pretty sure, but not 100% that the water was weighting down the leafy part of the plant to the dirt then the leafs would die off one by one. I have restarted them and they are doing a lot better now that I am being careful w/ the water and not watering them so much. On a side note the Kale is doing awesome which is odd... thought they were from the same family.
I gotcha boyinblue823, no worries. Yeah, sometimes certain plants thrive one year and the next year they don't etc...You're doin' the right thing brotha! Keep it up for sure. One tip. I generally always poke holes in the bottom of the cups and sit them in the tray and water from the bottom. I get much better results this way. :)
So that is $6 at dollar store. I get clothes hamper. There is a 2 inch lip at bottom. I put A piece of landscape cloth around and fill with dirt and plant. That 2 inch hold of water helps. Or I use Wal-Mart or cloth in a hamper without bottom lip and place on oil pan. I put drain holes up 2 inches . Both work for my Vegas. And the handles can help move them ad needed. I will try yours this year. Looks like mosquitos would stay out. At 75 I need easy things. I have 3 straw bales breaking down to try watermelons and cukes.
I like your setup with the view window. I had set up my self watering tub but wasnt happy that I couldnt see or tell if the system was wicking properly so, I tried your view window. At first it lieaked but I didnt do properly or the way you did it I had to redo it in the manner you show, hopefully this time it will worlk, thanks - Steve

***** Depending on what kind of setup you have a person might want to consider an overflow hole if they insert a fill pipe as I did with pvc. I also drilled a drain hole and used a cork stopper. In this way you could easily drain out old stagnant water and put in fresh. Those are just options of course either yea or nea.
This is an awesome video - I am new to container gardening and with it getting hotter and hotter and I'm getting a bit to old to go out for hours at a time to tend to a garden - not to mention snakes are coming in more frequently - this will make it easier for me and my back... A couple ropes placed through small holes in the bottom of the top tray will wick plenty of water. They can run horizontally across the bottom. I like to drill extra holes and place the fabric over the bottom. I think just the holes alone may work. Key is using soil that will wick, but most do. I love wicking gardens. Very care free and perfect moisture all the time. I even grow cactus this way. I've been making mine out of 55 gallon drums that I get for free. I cut the top 1/3 off and turn it upside down with holes and ropes over the remaining portion which holds the water.
Oh Bob Campbell, I love the 55 gallon drum idea! I've tried using wicks before and didn't have any luck....maybe it was the wrong material. What do you use? So, are you saying the extra holes as a way for evaporated moisture to enter the soil as well? I've heard of it working like this in the past... Thanks for the comment, I appreciate the support!
Thanks so much for taking the time to share such valuable information for me as a beginner. I appreciated the patient, simple instructions you used for explaining each step, as well as the options you offer for the items used. God Bless . . .
Do away w the window by using white clear containers as water reservoir ,can use coconut lining to fill white container instead of paper to line .drill holes at water level so extra water can be drained out .
This was great information. I needed to find a solution to babysit my seedlings while I'm in Asia and this will do the trick. Wonder if I can stick my egg carton starter pods directly into the dirt. I'm going to try and see how that works as an experiment in one of the tubs.I probably have enough of the items already in the garden to get started and I'm going to put a pvc pipe into the containers so my dog sitter can add water while I'm gone if the tubs rub dry.
This is really great. I found your video to be the most useful. I found transparent containers so a window is not needed which is great. I do have a couple questions for you. I live in Vietnam so these utensil drying containers (I'm not sure what they are exactly), they are impossible to find. You mentioned cups can be used. Would I be cutting similar slits in them or just punching holes through them. Also the cups would be quite small so may need a few in place on container right? I hope you can elaborate a little. Thank you kindly. I'll be sure to share my finished products with you. I plan to make them beautiful.
Could also use a transparent box for the water reservoir to check it's level, instead of cutting out that piece from the opaque one and then sticking a transparent one on it afterwards, would have saved time and effort
I agree that this solution looks a bit fiddly.. However, a clear reservoir will allow algae to grow. I have seen folks spray paint a transparent container black minus a small "viewing strip" to combat the algae.
Anytime I've built a wicking pot like this, the dirt at the bottom always turns anaerobic and starts smelling REALLY bad. Is there a good way to avoid that? Perhaps a different material to use for the wicking part?
I think you can add a drainage system, I saw some videos where they this systems are set up in top of a patio chair and than another plant in a different pot at floor level, the overflow water from the top one was the perfect self watering fertilizer for the bottom ones.
Pretty nice ..ive been making and using wicking pots for 17yrs they rot and break from the sun in 4 yrs. a lot simpler then yours and I use clear tubs even plastic shoe boxs for small and indivual plants. you see the fluid level thru the plastic and im sure the light air prunes the roots. I had 20 shoebox wickers on a 4'×8' table once . you just top them off and relax for days..BTW if you find that your dirt filled basket transfers Too Much water..next time put a bunch of pearlite or grow rocks in the wick basket with the soil..it reduces the capillary action drying the soil a little. good video sir ..clever design

One reason is the fact he paid $1.50 to fuck up a perfectly good container. Last i looked there is a wealth of free clear plastic just lying around
Because people who try this will be leaving standing water all over their gardens.
