I hope you all have taking a look at how Ray Harryhausen did the special effects on the Earth vs the Flying Saucers and some of the other cool stuff I discovered.
clearly ...it's even better when you realise it was a " one man" endeavor...Ray Harryhausen was an amazing artist...it's old, but it's still amazing, creative and poetic .
The Rhedosaurus monster in "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms" looked so realistic for its time, with the little touches that Harryhousen added: the lashing tail, the eyes blinking in the sunlight, the way it threw its head forward to roar. Way ahead of movies like "Godzilla" that just had a guy in a rubber suit galumphing around.
How could you forget this amazing goof , the scene where , a B-29 confront a saucer with the wastgunner firing a 30 caliber gun from an open position. The problem was the B-29 was a bomber, not a fighter, it had 50 caliber guns , but no open gunner position , the guns were operated remotely !! Still a great movie, despite it's few flaws !!
Yes, that's a classic (!) of Fifties cinema. It had quite an effect at the time on its baby boomer audience (moi: '55). Super cast with Marlowe, Michael Rennie, Billy Gray, Patricia Neal, and Sam Jaffe. Directed by famed Robert Wise. Yes, of course, Marlowe played a different character; no one implies that he did!
Amazing Earth vs the Flying Saucers Movie Facts 0754AM 25.10.23 I dont think i'm destined to see his maquettes and monsters as utilized in his cinematic projects.... )ie i misesd the exhibition(
Back in the day this was the most amazing special effects ever 😀
Yeah, and it took a lot of patience. I'm not sure I could do work like that frame by frame.
The 1953 War of the Worlds did much better in the special effects category

Can't believe Ray Harryhausen only died 10 years ago he was the best at miniature special effects stock motion in my opinion.
One of my favorite si/fi movies

There are so many great ideas here for how to film on a budget. Thanks!

Much better looking than the hubcaps used in Plan 9!
