🐺 Puppies, 8 weeks old Shelties! Which would you pick?

We were definitely in Puppy heaven when we went to pick up our Shetland Sheepdog puppy.
There were 8 puppies: Sable, Tri-Color, Blue Merle and even a special little all grey one!
Our pick of the litter was the smallest female puppy, but she was the most energetic and feisiest one out of the pack!
Check out the video of the puppies playing, running and wrestling.
    Which one would you pick?
Do you have a favorite puppy, like an Aussie puppy, Border collie puppy?
Lot's of people mistake a Sheltie (Shetland Sheepdog) as a Collie puppy, even when the Sheltie is an adult! Also the Blue Merles can be mistaken for a Aussie, or a Sable mistaken for one of the most popular dogs ever... Lassie! But a puppy Lassie of course!
The bi-color Shelties also have a close resemblance to a Border collie.
Many years ago, the Shelties were bred for the Shetland Islands, a cold damp misty climate, hence the 2 coats needed to keep them warm. The Sheltie is a descendant of small specimens of the Scottish Collie and the King Charles Spaniel (much like an Icelandic Sheepdog) and once brought to mainland Britain in the 20th century, a Rough Collie (Lassie) was added to the breed stock helping develop the modern look of the breed today.
Shelties are extremely intelligent, learn tricks and commands very quickly. Usually within about 5 times of repeatedly showing them the same task. They are extremely loyal and will tend to "herd" you and your family, always keeping an eye where everyone is. They are known to be like your shadow!

Once you've had a Sheltie in your family, very few breads can compete with your heart after that experience. But I am certain I am not telling you anything you wouldn't know by now. Very sorry for the loss of your Chloe. And congratulations on your new addition. 5 years since my 3 Shelties have passed. I want another pack, but my heart isn't ready. For now I will live vicariously. Enjoy!

Perfect size... dont need a huge scooper (lol) great for walks (keeps us in shape). And smart! Quick learners.
Beautiful coats. I know they talk about shedding, but my 1st Sheltie did not shed too much... once a year and if you brush, you capture it all and can knit a Sheltie sweater!

I own 2 rough collies. One passed away in 1993. Then I got my 2nd rough collie in 1994 and he passed away in 2007 from nose cancer.
In 2008, I got my very 1st sheltie. He passed away on July 31, 2020 at the age of 12.5 years weighting 50lbs. He was on Zignature and Wellness, and it was not good for him. I miss him very much.

I am sorry about the loss of your last Sheltie but congrats on your beautiful new puppy!
My last Sheltie passed away a year ago at the end of this month. She was the runt of the litter but after a few months the vet told me "she's not a runt anymore" LOL I got her at 11 weeks and she lived to be 14 1/2 years old. It's never easy to lose them no matter what age they are. No dog will replace her and I will always be sad that she is gone but we have room in our hearts for another place for another dog to love.
The only thing my last Sheltie went after was our toes and toilet tissue LOL and my Sheltie before that we got at 6 months so we didn't have to do the usual training to stop play biting (that is what it is with puppy's PLAY biting as it's not aggressive but have to be taught to stop before it would become aggressive) so it's been a really tiring experience with this new puppy we got at 8 weeks as she went after ALL OF US LOL to play bite and chew on EVERYTHING. We stopped the play biting but she still wants to chew everything she can get her mouth on so had to take most of her toys away that has strings as she would pull them out and swallow them if we didn't take catch her. Now we have to get her some toys for aggressive chewers lol She is now 7 months old.
Anyone wanting a puppy just make sure you realize all the work that goes with it no matter how smart they are or what breed you get. There is a lot more to it than just them being cute and cuddles and play. Most will chew up your home and you, too, LOL if you don't have the patience to properly train them. It's normal behaviors for puppy's so you will need lots of love and patience 😁🐶💖 and I hope you will love them just as much when they get old, too! Really upsets me when I hear of people that get rid of their dogs just because they got old 😥🐶
Also, I would advise to make sure you read the contracts and agree with it. It took me awhile to find my new puppy and had to drive a ways to get her, too, because I don't agree with some of what some breeders put in contracts! It is okay if you do agree with it! I am just saying make sure you are aware of all the breeders put in it before you go pick them up so you will know if you agree or not. I Have had dogs for 45 years. All before were easily trained so didn't need any training videos for them but this one I have gone through watching a lot of them LOL so just remember what works for one dog might not for another. My puppy is very smart but very stubborn!

Thanks so much for your feedback! Well written and put.
Our furry friends are really members of the family and the loss is never easy. In fact the new pup, makes me think even more about my passed Sheltie, but in a good way... it is work, and they need attention. So be sure the commitment is there...

They live to be 14, rarely much older. Mine did. If you can’t deal with a puppy, contact your state’s Sheltie Rescue to find an appropriate adult. I have done it twice and am waiting again. Of the those I have had, the rescues were by far the most fun. I bought two adults from breeders that were not as accepting of the change. Love, attention, and doing their bidding-that will keep them happy.🤭🤭

We had two Shelties. We got Rascal when he was 10 weeks old and Cricket who was 3 years old when we got her. Both were smart, obedient and so sweet. Rascal was almost eleven when he died of congestive heart failure. Cricket was almost 12 when we had to say goodbye when she suffered from extreme arthritis. Poor thing could barely walk. Had a mutt that was a peek-a-poo and then a lab/beagle mix whose legs were so short but had a long torso. Loved them all but Shelties have a special place in my heart because Rascal was our first dog and was less than a year old when our daughter was born. They grew up together and the things she did with and too him! Now we have a Pomeranian. He is sweet, cute and a mind of his own. Enjoy Ollie - she is beautiful - both of you are so fortunate to have found each other!

Snow in Orange County? Maybe in the mountains? We are in Contra Costa County. We got our sable from a breeder, but he was chosen for us based on what we wanted, which was an outgoing companion animal for a family. He is a monster for a Sheltie at 40 lbs but he is cute and silly. We adopted a one-year old blue merle female who had grown out of spec a little from a breeder that was thinning her kennel to reduce her work load due to having some carpal tunnel issues. For her we wanted an adult that was good with a family and used to being around puppies (our sable was bout 5 months). If I were to get a third I would try for a tri or a bi-blue, but I sort of want a tri. My wife is... well let's I am working on her :D

I would pick the one that came to me. When we went to pick up our sheltie pup (10 years ago now) the breeder had a few litters, so there were like 10 sheltie pups in her van. We were first in line. When the breeder opened the side door one came to us and the rest hid behind her. I recognized him from the photos that we received and, after confirming, picked up Flynn and took him home. He is barking behind me as we speak.

I grew up with Shelties. My mom used to show them, so they have a soft (yet loud) place in my heart. I prefer the classic sable and white with full collar. Todays Shelties are nothing like those I grew up with. The pups I remember didn't have half the coat the ones have nowadays (so much more hair!!!), naturally tipped ears, a more square face/head and generally more robust than the ones now. I see a sheltie now and I think, what the hell did they do to the breed? The merle at 0913 is more in line with what I'd be interested in body wise if I was going to get one. Beautiful happy puppies, and a loud handful.

Lassie... is a Sable color... the most popular. They were breed a lomg time ago with a Rough Collie (Lassie) which helped with those colors.

What a cute video thanks for sharing this with us. We are going to get a shetland sheepdog puppy May 8 from the breeder he was born March 5. Can't wait to see more videos! Will be able to pick out my Conner on April 17 from the breeder till then have to do so much to prepare for him to live with me. Picking out a vet and all the stuff that he will need to be healthy and happy!

      Are you getting from Tucson?
Banfield is a good vet to use. They have a monthly plan that is very reasonable. You gettinf a bi black or Merle.

Border Collies are great! So smart. Ollie with her black and white looks a little border collie.
We lost our 11.5 yr old Sable sheltie Jan 17... very tough.
I would say getting a puppy after a few weeks is good therapy, and eases the pain. But does remind me alot, as the puppy does some of the same things... brings back positve memories.
