FLOW with groove

2024 has been full of creative adventures, mostly in media other than music. My beautiful Eurofriend hasn't been forgotten though, and this week I settled into the new studio (check out that view!) and started patching again. It's been almost eight months since I've had time and breath to dive deep, so I'm starting off easy-a simple, generative, grooving bit of ambient music.
Behind the scenes a lot has changed-and for once, it's not about gear. Composing for modular is a new adventure for me. Getting a machine-like instrument to be expressive has required discoveries in unexpected corners. This very simple ambient patch contains a lot of new thinking and ideas on how to get the instrument to reflect the musical moods I'm after. Subtle additions like modulating the modulators, sequencing VCAs, and long envelopes mixed with smooth random to evolve a patch over time; to more dramatic changes like ‪@IOLabs‬ Flux as a groove generator and using the marvelous ANA2 from ‪@MysticCircuits‬ to create all kinds of modulation mayhem. A lot of it is about sculpting an arc, then figuring out how to get a patch to reflect that desire through several different moods. After a long "getting to know you" period, I feel like I finally have the elements under my fingers to start composing and playing the music I've been dreaming of since I started this modular adventure. I'm excited to show what I've been learning through the music over the next little while.
