OMG, the talent and skill is just dripping from the walls and ceilings here - this is SICK! SO Incredibly silky and soulful and Grace's voice is so lovely and deep and full. Incredible! And who ever thinks of a trumpet as sexy? But THIS IS! Love, Love, Love. Kudos to Neil for the writing too, definitely.

Sure the vocals and guitars and drums are great but in the long version Willy Waldman on trumpet steals the show IMO.
Even Joe looks amazed at one point.

Any performance by Joe gets my instant attention, but this one is so
engaging with all this talent. Your breakdown makes it so clear what is going on.
Not being a musician, but just an enjoyer of music, your insight and ability to
explain the fine details makes the music so much more meaningful to me.
Satriani is amazing. I still enjoy his music with Chickenfoot. Maybe you can
see how they get on some day. Rock on Fil 🤘🏻

Great seeing you do this vid--it's one of my all time favorites--not much of anything better out there on TH-cam. Even tho I think she raised the intensity a bit early here Grace's voice is phenomenal. I can't express how much the trumpet adds to this piece--and as usual Satriani is out of this world. As you mention all the musicians are exceptional. Even as much as I like it, I still want to hear Neil Young and Crazy Horse's original version after listening to this. It's like a pair of old comfortable shoes, since I bought the Zuma album when it first came out (first pressing?) so it's been played a lot.

    • @goodun6081
      @goodun6081 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah, I agree that Grace Potter sounds terrific here, almost like she is channeling Lucinda Williams, until she brings up the intensity too much and too soon. This song was originally written to be slow and dirge-like, and it shouldn't be rushed or saddled with too much overwrought fervor early on.

This song is a pure gem, at the top of the Americana treasure chest. NY is renowned for not doing copy/paste of his stuff in concerts, opening doors for others to experiment their own emotional response to his art and various tryouts. That explains the profound respect for this uncompromising artist by the musicians community and the public as well. Thanks, Phil!

What a great group of awesome talent. Satch is a criminally underrated player, as how good he is flies under the radar for most people.
I've heard a lot of people refer to him as the poor man's Steve Vai or a bad copy of the latter, which is a great disservice to both. Those people disappear rather quickly when faced with the fact that Joe taught Steve for a couple of years and was instrumental in waking up Steve's hunger for learning.
Joe is one of my favourites and I never tire of how good he is in every aspect of guitar playing.
Great analysis as usual mate, keep it up

Satriani is one of those guys that's become legendary enough to hand a younger player a career just by stepping on stage together. And he never hesitates to play with anyone, anywhere, it seems. Man, i wish the work he did with Particle on their live Transformations release was available on yt. That's where i learned about Ben Coombs, (who doesn't seem to have had the good fortune i'd like to have seem come to him, yet), and Scott Metzger of WOLF! Worth noting that others have, (or had), the same sensibility, like B.B., Buddy Guy, Santana, or Eric Clapton. SRV got a nice leg up from Albert King, among others. One can really tell a player cares about the music over his own aggrandizement when he or she does this kind of thing. Anyhow, here's WOLF! m.th-cam.com/video/jwA9RtbyiZE/w-d-xo.html

Thanks Fil. Incredible musicians. Not sure how many know Grace Potter, in 2012, was a VH-1 diva along with Katy Perry and Kiley Minogue. She blew the other two off the stage. The performance has since been scrubbed from the net. which is a shame. Those that saw it, including me, were blown away. Her band, the Nocturnals, however, was missing their bass player, Catherine Popper, who had fallen ill and subsequently had to leave the band. About a year afterwards Popper recovered enough to join a trio which included Nora Jones and opened for Neil Young. Here's Grace Potter and the Nocturnals performing "Paris" (one of the songs of her VH-1 performance) on David Letterman. Also note the exceptional guitar work by both Scott Tournet and Benny Yurco: th-cam.com/video/jjgIzKxfd4I/w-d-xo.html

Fil, you’re awesome and I love your insight. Honestly, though, I hate this song, and it’s one I would like to discuss with Niel concerning all the historical nuance of the subject at hand. Nonetheless, I cannot deny it is a well written, hard hitting composition, and this performance was excellent! Concerning the trumpet, I will say this: something like verbrato is not particularly that difficult. If I can relate it to guitar, it would be in essence saying bending is not really all that difficult. Let’s face it, any one particular “trick” on any given instrument is not necessarily difficult. What makes it special is the ability to use it in the proper context, and then to do it well and this guy pulls it off in spades! Also, just an observation, but it is interesting that he plays off center. That is NOT standard for playing brass, but it works! A great example of going outside the lines and being the awesome even when it breaks the rules!

Hey, Fil, another great analysis, another inspiring choice, another Master Class. One point of order, though. Trumpet was my second instrument (after flute, before guitar) and vibrato is much more difficult on guitar than trumpet. On trumpet, or cornet, it is almost more difficult to play without vibrato. The trick is controlling it, but really ... controlling it is pretty much always the trick to anything, isn’t it!

Second time I have listened to this commentary and second time I am enthralled. Five musicians doing one song, each putting their talent up front and no one stepping on the other's toes, and they are showing a respect for Neil Young which is evident since they don't flash out and do something to draw attention to themselves. Is sounds like they want to contribute something to this musical composition and each one seems to be on a TEAM.
You do justice to them, good on you.

It is true that a bad original will not make for a good cover. However, there are originals that are just seeds of potential that a another great artist will take and grow into a giant sequoia. The best example of that is, I think, Davis's 1958 original of "Texas Flood" serving as the seed which Stevie Ray Vaughan later grew into something that is, like the sequoia, massively awesome, mind-blowing, breathtaking, and which stands the test of time.

A bit of advice for you Phil if you start digging into Grace Potter. For the most part (anything after her first two albums with the Nocturnals) stick to the live performances. Her Nothing but the Water album is far and away my favorite album anyone has released in the 21st century. After her second album though her record company became hell bent on turning her into Beyonce, Katy Perry, or some other pop princess. She is a rock singer at heart and her live stuff is so much better than her last couple of studio albums. There is a great video of her walking down the sidewalk in a park in San Diego doing a version of Low Road with Benny Yurco walking beside her playing an acoustic guitar as the sole musical instrument.

Hey Fil, you should totally do GRP Live - Rio Funk! It's a great retro full of a bunch of GRP session artists. Great stuff. The whole entire video is great (I have the DVD) but you can find Rio Funk, which is probably my favorite, on YT.

The other guitarist on stage might be worth a look. Kimock was apart of a great Bay Area band, Zero. Played with the dead and co. One of Garcia’s favorites.

I was actually surprised at how well Joe covered Neil. I wasn't expecting him to really capture that kind of sound authentically considering their styles are so vastly different. Tbh I'm not really a huge Joe Satriani fan, but I have a newfound appreciation for his playing. This probably has something to do with the fact I have an arguably unhealthy obsession with Neil's music. BTW please do another video on Neil Young! He has an amazing rendition of All Along The Watchtower which he performs with Pearl Jam. There is video of it on TH-cam.

Great voice! What a thrill to play with the greatest guitarplayer on earth! I didn’t know the song, but I loved the performance of the whole band and great to see Joe playing moody and never outside.

OH' Potter is so soulful. This is all Potter and not so much Joe, but Joe is admirable here.

Like that they put a Mexican/Spanish feel with the horns similar to Love (Forever Chsnges) in 67 but the trumpet is really getting freaky with it in a good way. Nice they let another instrument in than just the guitar shine. It’s nice to see the whole ensemble participate.
One thing you mentioned at the beginning brought up this idea I’ve had Where musicians like this play some long jams and make the isolated tracks and fully mastered tracks available to high schools (like 14 to 18 years old in the U.S.) along with transcriptions. Like an album package so all the instrument players could hear the parts in isolation and then access the material in different ways according to what the teachers feel is best for each student. Some could learn by ear from the master tracks, others from the isolated tracks and others the sheet music. Then the whole school band or Jazz Band could learn more complicated material for performance and interact more directly with the music. The other hallmarks of the program would be: Diverse material from different genres, Learning the studio process by having some students mix the isolated tracks and use this as a template for the school to record and mix their own performances and learning how to collaborate in a collegial and professional manner.
Ideally it would be an ongoing series with the artists and the record companies providing it at a discount or even for free for disadvantaged schools.
Please someone tell me if this already exists.

I think the amount of work it would involve has probably ruled it out unfortunately.

Wings of Pegasus - Yes, it probably would be cost prohibitive.
