I’m not Jewish but attended 2 Bar Mitzvahs it was a blessing to witness celebrating and seeing the maturity of friends on their spiritual journey at such a young age.
My husband and I saw it when it came out and loved it too, for the same reasons you mentioned! The only thing that was not true was the parents (who are Gen X like us) talking about how "in our day," they didn't do over the top b'nei mitzvah. The parties are definitely more over the top these days, but they were pretty lavish then too. My husband had one that definitely competes with the ones today. Fancy hotel, black tie, kosher caterer, huge event, relatives flying in from all over the world etc. At our shul now, it seems a lot of ppl keep them more heimish and don't go as crazy. Our twin niece and nephew had theirs last year and just did the kiddush lunch at the shul afterwards, and it was really nice and meaningful. In any case, the movie was great and captured real life so well. Also loved the "cool kids" and also how Jewish values fit in with regular teen life
I loved this movie! Heard about it somewhere online and watched it. I love the whole idea of how close they tried to get as true as possible to growing up in a Jewish family and community.
I absolutely loved this movie! 10 extra points for Adam Sandler 🤣 I thought this was a great movie especially for friends doing through the usual middle school drama. I laughed, I cried, all over feel good movie! ❤
It was so good I wanted to watch it twice haha. I love how it shows an ordinary family in a humorous and truly authentic way, and my goodness Adam's daughters really stole the show. They were nothing short of perfect comedic actresses
I loved this movie too! I'm not Jewish but I taught in a Jewish Day School for almost 20 years and attended many Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. I will say that the parties in the Midwest are much lower key than depicted in the movie. I loved hearing Stacy sing the prayers and read her Torah portion. that made the movie feel more authentic to me. I am a pretty big Adam Sandler fan and I also like the fact that he casts friends and family members in his movies.
I loved this movie so much. I really appreciated the diversity of all the jewish characters, having jews of different races, sexualities, etc. I felt really seen as a queer jewish poc, which isnt something I often can say. Also the fact that stacy and i have the same hebrew name was super cool!
Does suck it is on Netflix only, but will keep an eye out for it to go to DVD. Lol, did come by the book of the same title. (An adaptation?) Also, possible you could do reviews/suggestions of fiction books with Jewish characters that aren't taking place during/around WW2? Or even Jewish authors to look into?
I didn't have a bar mitzvah, I really hated the fact that I need to go to Rabbi and learn the "Parasha". And I really didn't wanted a big party with all the relative and it just made me feel weird and I didn't want all the pressure. Luckily my parents didn't pressure me to do that.
It's a wonderful mitzvah to read from the Torah, but not everyone is cut out to do it, and it's better you didn't do if it wasn't for you. You still become a bar mitzvah when you turn thirteen anyway
Not sure I can relate, but my experience is probably pretty atypical. I've been to plenty of bar and bat mitzvahs where there was a huge party, but my mother thought that was tacky and missing the point, so we just had a nice buffet lunch - though I did get to dress up for a fancy dinner with a few close friends too. But we were also at a small reconstructionist synagogue withouth a Hebrew school, so while I had been to a conservative Hebrew school for a couple of years, I mostly just had tutors... And I honestly didn't want a big party, because I've never liked parties. So I'm glad it wasn't an antisemitic portrayal, but I'm still not sure I would be able to relate.
I loved the movie! Especially because it seems like most pop culture involving Jews are either featuring Orthodox Jews or secular Jews. Loved seeing the kids in Hebrew school, and Stacy practicing her leyning, as well as the importance of Judaism in all the kids' lives. And I loved the Rabbi!
I thought it was funny as well and enjoyed it im not jewish myself but was so cool to watch and i loved the fact they made the rabbi a female cause i always thought they were males 🤣😂 she was super funny xx
Did not see this, like Drew..People have to stop being so sensitive and offended. Self deprecation actually is very so common in Jewish humor..Thanks for the video, Marion
@@candase547I guess then they would no longer be gentiles though... So I would still clarify that you have to be Jewish to have a bar or bat mitzvah. At our shul, we don't do adult bar and bat mitzvahs either. After someone converts, they can request and plan to read from the Torah at any time.
I might give it another try. I managed 15 minutes. Maybe it's because I'm not from the USA that it didn't relate at all. Mind you, I did like looking at rich people's houses.
If their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their full inclusion bring!
you're funny. I'm 61 I did not have a bas mitzvah. it's hard to see Films about Jewish figures played by non-Jews I was wonder can't they find a good Jewish actor but no offense to Adam Sandler fans he is my least favorite Jewish entertainer by far. i'd rather watch the Netflix show if they got the actor from Oppenheimer! it's just my dark sense of humor but thanks for the review was so cheerful sweet upbeat! right now, I'm watching Apple TV foundation based on books by written by Isaac Asimov ...Jewish! No bas mitvah in Foundation!
She was a lot right? But she so perfectly represented what some reformed communities are like. I mean, she's the extreme, but still. There's that general vibe.
I did see it. I thought it was cute but there were a few things I didn't like. The woman Rabbi was too hippy and they over used too many Jewish words. Just my opinion

Enjoyed the movie!
The emphasis on the parties reminded me of the 2000’s movie, “Keeping Up with the Steins “
I'm not Jewish, but this movie is right up my alley. I'm definitely going to watch it 😁

Ngl I really appreciated the movie ♡ I liked how the focus was the relationship between two friends against the backdrop of Jewishness ♡♡ ❤❤❤
My theme was 'Being Jewish' too😂 I watched this and I went into it thinking it was too young for me but it's just... SO relatable. I really loved it!

It was an entertaining coming of age movie, Jewish style. 👍
Netflix should ask you to do promos and reviews. So much enthusiasm. 👏

I Absolutely Adored that Movie I Love Adam Sandler and His Daughter's Can Act .. Awesome Movie ... 🎬
We saw them film it and a few of my friends were in it!!!
I saw the movie the other day loved it thought it was good.

fave funny part was Rabbi on treadmill. too kooky and funny. My rabbi is very funny so I can't wait to see what they think about it.
Good to know 👍🏼

I just watched it tonight and was thinking ‘I wonder if Marion will review it’ 😂

The DJ guy is a famous Israeli guy 😉
I loved it i just watched it 2 days ago😃

❤❤❤
You should watch Jewish Matchmaking next!
Not watching anything new due to the ongoing WGA-AGA strikes but good to know it's actually good.
I really enjoyed it. The progressive rabbi was hilarious.
I really enjoyed this movie. It is just such typical teen behavior, no matter your religion.
Just watched this and really liked it.

I thought Dua Lipa was antisemitic? I’m going to watch the movie BTW ❤
She is anti-Israel. And one of her songs was in the film during the first 11 mins.
Can gentiles have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah?
Sure they can but they must convert to the Jewish religion first❤💜

I am old 74. I liked the movie but the Rabbi made gave me spilkes. She was a little too hip for my taste.
I just said the same thing. Lol She was too hippy for me. I guess if I was a teenager and not an old 64 yr old woman I'd like it. But I didn't

I am Jewish teenager and I saw this movie an that Movie have nothing with to be a jew it was only Show.
