The antenna on the receiver looks to me like a mini helical GPS antenna, the bare SMA is where the VHF antenna is supposed to be attached, it is surprising it is working at all with no antenna! I noticed that SMA connector on the top of the Garmin remote and realised that’s where your VHF antenna should be. I’m going to bet that the reception on that system was crap because it had no antenna connected. The longer the antenna the better when it comes to VHF. If it didn’t come with it, I would suggest buying a replacement from Garmin. I reckon the difference will be night and day.
There was already an antenna of some kind on top, maybe the unused SMA was for GPS. Though, if the stub antenna was the only VHF antenna on the receiver, I'd definitely recommend a larger one.

Hey Strangerparts, awesome land, I've loved the CO mountains since I was a kid. You might also consider painting purple rings on trees between your signs. Its a (mostly) universal indicator of no trespassing, no hunting. Not that it will do much good on 100 acres in the mountains, but certainly legal reciprocity. There are also game cameras, (optional solar power accessory battery packs) that will transmit on cellular frequency. Might be a great project for you (without available cell signals) to hack/mod to a local frequency. Would be interesting to see if you could set up higher signal antennas for dog tracking, game camera, even more wifi. Looking forward to your new channel.
I could be wrong but based on the naked SMA stub sticking out of the top, it looks like you were doing the range test without the VHF antenna attached to the handset. That would significantly reduce the range.
@@ElectricRanchCO Based on the product photos it looks like it should have come with one. It looks like a standard walkie-talkie or ham radio handset antenna. At a guess, the little stub antenna on the handheld is probably just for the GPS and then VHF antenna is the link between the collar and then handset, sending telemetry and commands over the lower frequency link. If it's using a protocol like LORA you could get crazy range without a lot of power. Might be fun to take a look at with an SDR.

Congratulations on achieving a lifelong goal of yours! You certainly earned it. Watching this video has made me realize how much I long for the wilderness. I am a city slicker but I hope to acquire land of my own in the future. Best of luck to you and your friends with your endeavors!
This isn't related to the dog collar, but if you're gonna put a cell tower at a vantage point it might be worth adding a Meshtastic relay node on it too. Not only can you use it, but it could help people in the area who might be lost to get help, or just people on nearby public land communicate with others.
A couple of others have said similar, but adding a meshtastic network would also help with the dog tracking as well as coms network, you can set up solar powered nodes in the woods and then one portable one on the dog, then when it goes past a node it can update it's location and with the meshtastic network, you could get a very big range.
meshtastic is going to have the same if not worse issues with trees due to it's higher frequency. 900mhz vs 100mhz. same mechanics as to why 2.4ghz wifi network is seen throughout your home but 5ghz may eventually drop out.
When you're setting up you're own cell network you should look into adding Lora with the meshtastic project. Adding a low power router node with solar to your cell towers. Then you can add a GPS node to your dogs collar which will have a much better range than the Garmins VHF. It also has an app that allows anyone with a node to text eachother and see eachothers location no cell service req. Keen to see you build out this ranch with all the awesome projects you do!
If you don't have cell reception, maybe it's a good idea to install a repeater. Not sure if it's possible or even allowed in the US, and if the providers want to cooperate... But it might be worth a try. Even if it's only previous gen, you might need it to call emergency services.
Not to be a downer, but I've been on the internet long enough to know that if you show a tiny sliver of horizon and the internet is able to geolocate you within hours. Nevertheless, super cool project. Looking forward to more!
The interface on the Garmin remote reminds me of what you might have on a Meshtastic device. Since RF congestion is a non-issue where you're at, maybe Meshtastic and an ATAK companion system would be something to look into, as it'd be handy not just for finding dogs.
Maybe a good idea to study up on RF and radio tech. Good luck with cellular stuff, since that starts above 1GHz (typ 5 GHz), where all those trees and plants are "signal sponges". FYI the needles on those trees resonate starting at UHF, which is why the Forrest Service uses high power VHF (& even lower frequencies) and why they have large antennas on their stuff.
Looks like a lovely place! If it's something you'd enjoy, then you should set up a few meshtastic nodes about the place. I don't know if it would be better than the VHF for GPS tracking, but you can at least set up a mesh with some repeaters to get better coverage. They're very low-power, but penetration into the trees might be an issue; it's mainly just a bit of fun. It might also give you some good insight on planning a cellular grid without having to commit quite so much money upfront, but I'm guessing you've actually already started that project.
I think you might have already shown enough for people to find your location already. Rainbolt could definatley find it by just the mountains at the horizon. So if people want to find your place they will be able to. So just prepare accordingly with good enough cameras around your property. Paul Hibbert just review some on his channel that he got that looks to be really good.
I'd prioritize cutting back the paths you traverse regularly. I know from experience how easy it is to happen upon Large animals when strolling through backcountry. No way in Heck i'd not have a couple feet cleared on either side. Anywho, How dark does it get there?
