If Musty comes in to a top 6 role it’s a steal. I think he’s the X factor of this trade.

I was very underwhelmed when the trade first went down. I was wrong. We got a grade A forward prospect, a legit middle 6 forward, and a grade B defensive prospect. Along with that a few more assets that could end up being something. It was a good trade all around.

Timo was a very good player. Thanks for the great video, Professor Hockey! You know your stuff!

    Hey Professor,
One word: unadulterated. I have made this argument several times and perhaps the most glaring example of this would be Eric Karlson during his Norris Trophy campaign for the Sharks. My theory goes like this: When players are relied upon for want of a better option and when the players themselves perceive that "the cavalry is not coming" the player in question can elevate their game and show us all what their very best game looks like. This also assumes no serious injuries occur.
When EK had Burns with the Sharks and last season with all the HoF talent in Pittsburgh EK defers to others rather than assert his own game in an effort to elevate his teammates games. In San Jose we saw once Burns was gone what that looks like. EK pumped in a ton of assists (something like 3-1 assists to goals). Conversely Couture, Hertl and Timo all benefited as they are all 3 reliable trigger men.
This season the burden fell to Granlund, Ekluhnd and Zetterlund because there was no one else showing a consistent ability to create offense. So what does unadulterated Zetterlund look like? Now we know. We had no one else who was a reliable trigger man so by default it fell to Zetterlund to be that guy and I think he found out that he is a capable finisher in the NHL among other attributes he might have. Granlund already knew what he was capable of but, had not been relied on for several seasons to be a top line offensive guy and last season he showed the NHL that he is still a serviceable offensive talent. Again. Unadulterated. The cavalry is not coming so others have to do the heavy lifting or it won't get done.
Ekluhnd also benefited from being relied on and to his benefit was able to take a big step forward in his development and show some of the promise that made him a highly regarded draft pick.
Conversely, when a team has a lot of talent and synergy is established and chemistry established great things are possible. Stanlyh cups and what not. In the absence of enough talent to create synergy we get unadulterated players relied on to be their best. The later helps players to realize their NHL potential the former wins championships. Synergy cannot occur in the NHL until a team has enough talent like fuel rods in a nuclear reactor. Once enough talent is assembled then a reaction can be created that is sustainable and can in fact build into something awesome.
Love that you took a look back Professor. I think it is a measure of your maturity, intellect and fairness that you are aware that things take time and often cannot be judged fairly at the moment of a deal. This is what separates you from the "barbarian fans who constantly clamor at the Sharks gate demanding trades and firings at the first taste of a rough patch. Cheers!

It’s like what they say, somebody has to do the scoring. This season, with no Karlsson or Hertl or Couture, it fell on to Granlund, zetterlund and Eklund. It wasn’t always pretty but it will hopefully have been helpful for them moving forward.

@@professorhockey Completely agree. With those younger guys they need learning experiences and there is no substitute for game experience. Tough learning curve luckily you are a fair grader. hehe

Great analysis, Professor! If Mukhamedullin and Musty realize their promise in upcoming years it'll make this a really good deal. Zetterlund is already a pleasant surprise.

Nice analysis. I definitely remember feeling underwhelmed by this trade but so far it has aged pretty well. Still wish that 2nd would have become a first but I don’t think anyone could have predicted the nosedive NJ would take this season.
Also side note I’ve noticed a lot more likes and comments on your more recent videos. Glad to see your channel picking up steam and getting some well deserved recognition

Yeah, if only they had made the conference finals last year. The 2024 first would actually have been top 10 protected though, and with the Devils picking 10th, the Sharks likely would have got their unprotected first in 2025. If we really want to play the what if game, we can see how the Devils do next season.

Great video Professor. As a new fan of the Sharks (since Will Smith draft) it's great to get more lore and understanding on the temperature of the situation at the time on more niche topics. Appreciate it!

Cool to see a new Sharks fan here! Hopefully soon you’ll get to see some winning from this team, they used to be quite good at it.

Hughes and Nemec were untouchable, but I think Sharks fans thought they must be able to get Casey or Holtz. Mukhmadulin, Zetterland and Musty alone would have been a good return. I think Hatakka was an underrated pull for NJ, but he did have some injury trouble before he left. I think the Sharks might have thought an equal for equal trade with Okhotiuk would have worked. But flipping him, and getting Kostin was a nice move. To be honest, the Sharks could have used Johnson last season. At this point, I don't think style points matter. The Sharks needed NHL bodies on both sides of the ice, and they didn't have them. Hope they make a couple more moves before 24-25.

interesting video! i'm a new hockey fan, i actually started watching the sharks like a week after the timo trade so i never got to see him play but i did see the negative reactions from all the fans after the trade 😅 this was the first full season i've watched and woof it was a rough one. but i'm pretty sure it literally can't get worse lol i think we have some pretty cool young players developing like eklund and zetterlund and great prospects. i'm looking forward to luca cagnoni, he had a great season with the winterhawks, it still seems a bit far away but i hope he'll get a shot in san jose. ppl always talk about how small he is, and as a guy who's 5'7" i'm rooting for him lol he looks like a great player

While I was a fan of Timo's, he was limited in a lot of areas. He didn't kill penalties and was not really a play maker, he needed to be fed or nothing was happening for him. He also took a lot of unnecessary shots on goal with little or no chance to score.

Not paying Timo 8.8 mill is a win in itself as he will probably never be worth that. I am a big Timo fan and that doesn't change my point.
This was the type of trade Doug Wilson refused to do before he paid Tomas Hertl that awful contract when the sharks were already bad.
