Royster playing like Pridgen doesn’t belong next to him. The aggression and precision and responses to his turn is godly. Meanwhile Pridgen gracefully enjoys the moment. A very interesting dynamic.
It's called a SHED. That's when musicians get together to showcase, share, inspire, push and fellowship through music and what they learned. Chops play a major part in sheds. So, to downplay these phenomenal drummers because they do a lot of chops that you can't, only means you have missed the whole purpose of watching this video.
You can tell thomas loves what hes doing, He always has that Grin on his face and what makes it even better, He is one of the most badass drummers ever
Me, I've been watching this since 2008 off and on. This video first introduced me to Tony Royster. I already knew of Thomas Pridgen when be used to play for the GMWA Youth Mass Choir back in the late 90s and early 2000s.
After highschool I made it a mission to watch this, now i’m 27 watching it in 2022. Time truly flies 😢 I wish musicians would come back to this Channel and shed.
Pridgen's behind-the-beat flow is f--ing insane and so dope. Royster is of course insanely good but Pridgen always stood out to me in this video. Which by the way is an all time classic that I favorited 10 years ago.
This is called a DRUM SHED. They're literally incorporating syncopated and subdivided licks and trying to fit it in measures as creatively as they can. I can see the organization. But I feel like it would maybe take years of experience to see that in this video. Even the "off-beat" fills and grooves they do. This is real art to me.
I'm so happy this video is still up here, I can't tell you how many times I watched this with my buddies back in high school. It was deff the golden era of youtube for drummers!
There is no, "who's better", here. There is just two incredibly talented people creating and expressing a form of art that takes a very long time to get to. There is no real "best in the world". Everybody plays their own beat. Their own style. Their own way. It's an expression of your character and your feelings. As soon as you try to play like other people, is the time that you just blend in with the crowd. So no, neither was better here. But this was an amazing shed. Forreal. Love it. Enjoy music and you will enjoy life.
Tony is a machine and can do things regular humans just can't do, but Thomas totally let's himself get carried away by the music and the feeling, and to me, that is just more fun to watch and listen to. Both are brilliant.
These BLESSED Guys Were Finomally Great On Drums...let's also give it up To The Backcourt Musicians...Every Time U C This Video 📹 That "Funky Melodic Groove "Sticks In Your Head🥳😎💜💯💥💣🙏.
I AM goint to my hightschool now. to be on nice mood today, i love to watch this video. seriously. i have only 10 minutes to watch something, and my choise is great jamming... love Pridgen... love Tony
2 of the best in the world; and this is what it looks like! Freedom still resides in America and there names are Tony and Thomas! May I have some lessons please.... Beyond words....
I'm still learning licks from this video! I love coming back to listen to the exchange. Personally I think Tony won this one, but it was great all around!
lol. you can tell the real drummers on these comments. These two are two of the best out, check their resumes and whom they play for currently and whom they've played for. They both know how to play music of all kinds, and in this instance they are playing chops and having fun. Some of the comments show that some of these ppl just come on here to hate because they with they just half as good. smh
Gospel chops made history at colorblind studios. most think that it evolved drumming, others think it dumbed it down. It definitely influenced the drumming community
at 0:17 he did his thing in the beginning. and i like the foot work and quick ad-libs also the gift that God has blessed them with and the hard work and practice that was giving proves you can do anything but fail. Glory to God!
Royster is much more focused, has a shorter attack and is more linear. He has some nice one handed rolls, linear 1-beat grooves and more strength overall. Pridgen is more open and washy, more explosive and is less linear, focuses on fills rather than playing pocket. I like them both, but Royster definitely has a one-up on Pridgen for sure.
while i agree royster is better on this...playing in the pocket doesn't necessarily mean its better right? Sorry I'm a jazz saxophonist not a drummer so perhaps I'm wrong
They're both great here. Royster has explosive singles so that's what he's working with here most of the time. Pridgen is doing some more rudimentary stuff, focusing mainly on the drums whereas Royster keeps moving between drums and cymbals. The kit Royster has sounds way better... I can't choose one over the other, I am a huge fan of Royster though...
1337Pwn4g3 pocket means you’re more than likely to get the gig. The less disciplined, groove conscious and overall musical the less you are seen as a suitable musician to build on. This is not to say anything about the drummers in this video. It’s called gospel chops for a reason. We are here for the chops and not necessarily to pit one against the other. They are playing loose and experimenting.
Looking through the comments, it really is hard to appreciate stuff like this if you are not a drummer/musician. These sessions obviously aren't meant to be played live during a gig . Think of it as a really high level practice session where these guys are listening to and learning from each other.
You're right. I can't play and they sound like shite. I've heard them play on their own and they sound awesome but this is garbled noise, unstructured nonsense. Play the whole thing without looking at the screen and you'll see what I mean.
You know. After listening a few times it's actually royster that seems to get off time a few times. Pridgen almost always nails the first accent note of the measures while royster has just a couple of times where I think he just tries to do too much within a measure. Overall, both actually did pretty well to show off their chops while at least trying to stay on time.
Its strange looking back at videos like this. Thomas has grown up and matured a lot. People might view that as his playing has gotten less exciting. I think he can still do all these tricks hes just uses more tact.
This video changed the entire course of drumming lmao I remember watching this in 2006 in my middle schools computer labv& having my mind completely shattered
It’s almost 2022 and this is the best drum shed I’ve ever watched, Thomas Pridgen did it for me
It's been awhile and this still got my mind blown 🤯
I agree man
Best shed ever
I still watch this today and this is one of the first videos I had on repeat when I first started drumming 12 years ago.
14 years later and I’m still in awe of this shed
I swear that intro is so classic if you've been watching gospel chops you'll know there is no better intro
Came back here in 2020 just to hear it again
This never gets old!!!
Amen bro

i think thomas has the best sounding snare ever. that opening roll gives me chills...
Don't think I've ever seen tony work quite this hard alone or with another drummer. Different styles equal talent.

Tony's singles but Thomas's flams doe 😍
Bassist and Keys infinitely solid ...
Slept on comment.
Dave Jackson on keys and Marcus Phillips on bass.
Exactly. That groove is ridiculous
i’m pretty sure the guy on keys is also a serious drummer

At 7:40 magic is happening, I do not simply understand how anyone can come up with such a beat! Truly amazing...

Some people just don't understand music that's deeper than the surface.
Dr. Billiam It's okay. It takes time for a drummer to see that. They just have to build up their knowledge on drumming.
Brandon Thomas Right on dude
Mario Jelev you know !! I'm sure you do lol
Brandon Thomas I kinda get what you mean man :-)
This Dvd changed my whole musical journey thank you Gospel Chops

You can tell Tony put a lot of work in to making both his hands soooo even.
the greatest drummers on this planet are the gospel drummers
josé perez Pridgen and Roysters number them one
Yes sir ur right
You have to add Calvin Rodgers and Chris Coleman to this discussion of greatest gospel drummers or just drummers period.
David Rodgers dude, chris coleman is a beast!!! he is the best tho!!!
