But what's "far right" about that? Surely it's perfectly sane to want to put an end to what is effectively open-borders into Europe? As things stand, the UN Convention rules that any person, from anywhere on the planet, can come to Europe and claim "asylum", and we in Europe must listen to his claim and put ourselves on the hook for his upkeep. If that is not stopped, then Europe will, in time, become a Muslim majority state. That's not alarmist. Over 90% of migrants to Europe are Muslim, and they will not stop coming. In the last couple of decades, the Indian, Philippine, and other Asian immigrants fill positions in healthcare for example, without whom the system would collapse.

I am an academic and so is my wife. We have achieved a good standard of living and want it to stay that way. I think the turning point was probably around Trump and Brexit time. I think didn't see those things coming - and it really threw him. What with him calling for restrictions on people who do not wish to take a highly experimental drug - I think that really showed his true colours.

I think it was Fraser Nelson who first seemed absolutely accepting of mass immigration. My Polish friend who came to the U.K. to work and prosper after the fall of Communism will, I think, return home. Our little town is drugs ridden and down at heel. It's been nominated by a newspaper as the best place to live in Britain. Heaven help us. Many of our coastal resorts are dire whereas Poland's are rather superior. Don't underestimate the Czechs either, or the Slovaks and other states which existed under Soviet control. None have a huge level of self-inflicted non productive people living on benefits, whether home grown or imported. The Roma people in my own small town in the Czech Republic (Never Czechia) were all working, earning, spending and accepted. One could live off the forest for fuel, fungi, nuts and berries. Many did. The country has half the population density of the U.K. and three times the percentage of forest cover. Approx. 11% v 34%. There's a price to pay for importing idle souls.

The polish election isn't an example of things swinging the other way at all like these so called political pundits irresponsibly say. The formerly governing party is by far the largest party and donald tusk had to do dodgy deals with dozens of other parties to scrape together a small, miniscule majority that is unsustainable. It may perhaps be Polands undoing but I suspect once Tusk proves to be a disaster and unpopular, the already dominant right will recover from the very small swing it has had against it and pick up more support from the Tusk camp.

The very notion of "popularism" is absurd. Democracy is based on popularism, how can it be a label for contempt.
Quite: "democracy" = rule by the people (demos = the people in Greek); "popularism" = "political movement appealing to the majority of the people" (from Latin populus, "the people").

In the last couple of decades, the Indian, Philippine, and other Asian immigrants fill positions in healthcare for example, without whom the system would collapse.

I think it was Fraser Nelson who first seemed absolutely accepting of mass immigration. He's still of the "It's lovely to have so many different types of foreign restaurants to choose from" state of mind that people living in certain well-heeled parts of London possess. 'Populist right' also known as what the majority want or democracy. However the definition of 'right wing' has little meaning in this context because the economic policies of the current Italian government (described as far right) are left wing (big government, state intervention etc). Wanting strong borders and consider net zero policies to be ruiness to Europe are not unique to right wing voters.
My Polish friend who came to the U.K. to work and prosper after the fall of Communism will, I think, return home. Our little town is drugs ridden and down at heel. It's been nominated by a newspaper as the best place to live in Britain. Heaven help us. Many of our coastal resorts are dire whereas Poland's are rather superior. Don't underestimate the Czechs either, or the Slovaks and other states which existed under Soviet control. None have a huge level of self-inflicted non productive people living on benefits, whether home grown or imported. The Roma people in my own small town in the Czech Republic (Never Czechia) were all working, earning, spending and accepted. One could live off the forest for fuel, fungi, nuts and berries. Many did. The country has half the population density of the U.K. and three times the percentage of forest cover. Approx. 11% v 34%. There's a price to pay for importing idle souls.

The polish election isn't an example of things swinging the other way at all like these so called political pundits irresponsibly say. The formerly governing party is by far the largest party and donald tusk had to do dodgy deals with dozens of other parties to scrape together a small, miniscule majority that is unsustainable. It may perhaps be Polands undoing but I suspect once Tusk proves to be a disaster and unpopular, the already dominant right will recover from the very small swing it has had against it and pick up more support from the Tusk camp.
