Baby’s Capture Mechanism - Model Showcase (Five Nights at Freddy’s)

    Baby is one of my favorite characters in Five Nights at Freddy’s: she stands out for being one of the only times an animatronic has been a genuine character in and of themselves, beyond just ‘monster with a sympathetic backstory’. Amoral but not evil, manipulative and yet naively childish. She’s more fleshed-out than a lot of the human cast, ironically enough.
    This is an iteration on my previous concept for an alternate Lefty design I made a tad over two years ago at time of writing. The concept is more or less the same, but I’ve learned many new tricks since then. This has meant breaking some new ground for me on the mechanical engineering side of things (my favorite part): my first use of U-joints, rubber drive belts, springs, gears, a scissor lift mechanism, a new more detailed eye mechanism driven by servos, and new efforts made to include at least a vague representation of air/fluid canisters for the pistons, wherever possible. It’s still not perfect, there are a few aspects that are glossed over or missing, but it’s my most mechanically sound animatronic design to date. As always, no cheating- all instances of clipping and impossible joints from the official design have been fixed.
    The outer plastic shell is pretty much unchanged from the games, based on the official model from Help Wanted, replaced bit by bit until none of the original model is left. All the interior skeleton is completely new, but I tried to keep the general look of ‘Ennard wires emulating musculature’ that all the SL endoskeletons have. My idea with this is that the writhing tubes contract and twist to move the skeleton, in a similar way to real muscles over bone.
    Where normally I animate FNaF animatronics to emphasize their ‘unalive-ness’, for want of a better word, here I changed my approach to be more expressive and natural. It’s my attempt at giving a nod to Baby being unusually self-aware.
    I felt the need to take a different approach to the sound design as well. I recorded a new set of movement sounds, with the intent of sounding a bit less clanky and primitive, more smooth and sleek. Sister Location has a very futuristic aesthetic, so my normal library of sound effects just didn’t seem to fit.
    Sounds are recorded from a 3D Printer, a wind-up toy for the eye servos, a refrigerator for miscellaneous mechanical hums, a variety of doorknobs and push-bars for the new clunky sounds, and sound effects carried over from FNaF proper, namely Sister Location and Security Breach.     could you do a video like this but on springbonnie and fredbear? and have springbonnie being a fixed springtrap with a purple vest and bowtie then have fredbear be a fixed withered golden freddy with a purple vest, hat and bow tie. and the endo skeleton be realistic to how a real one would work but at the same time to where a human can fit inside

      This is my most common request I get in the comments, and has been for a long time. Unfortunately, designing something that intricate, to the same standards of realism as models like this, is far beyond me.
      Until you’ve sat down and thought through it, it’s easy to underestimate just how big a leap of engineering it is from stuff like this up to a functional spring lock suit. First, you have to design a functional robot. That’s step one. Then, you have to figure out how it can be disassembled and rearranged to the extent that a human being can fit between the parts, and still have all the joints and connections and wiring seamlessly click back together with the strength to support its own weight. Third, you need to have all of this driven by a single motion of a hand crank, to move everything by constantly changing distances, accounting for every different potential pose the suit could be in when you start. All this needs to take place inside the space afforded by the costume.
      I’m not prepared to call it impossible, but it would take someone far cleverer than me to solve a puzzle like that. If any future animations I do feature springlock animatronics, I’ll probably just settle for something that only looks right at a glance through the gaps in the suit, much like how they do it in the games.

      @@TheNickofTimeif it helps, just make the animatronics fucking huge to allow you space for all the mechanisms. It would explain Nightmare and Nightmare Fredbear’s sizes, as well as how a human head could fit inside Fredbear. Make them at least double the size of a human, if not even bigger

      Anyways, back on topic:
      very good question. The answer ? Idfk, FNAF logic. Perhaps William also designed some kinda exoskeleton to assist in moving in those big motherfuckers ? Idk. I’m thinking about the shit that guy on TH-cam did to help him lift unrealistically oversized anime swords. Although I suppose that wouldn’t make any fuckin’ sense. An animatronic using both an endoskeleton and an exoskeleton ? Nah, not happenin’. Hmmm. Idk, it beats me. Maybe the wearers just have to use a shit-load of momentum to raise their arms and legs ? I’m really tryin’ to think of something here but nothing comes to mind. Fuck it, William and Henry are secretly body-builders. There ya go. Problem solved XD.

      It gives realism to what isn’t possible,it kind of reminds me of those fnaf vhs floating around,it gives a realistic look on how real people would handle those situations,but these just give a weird unrealistic and uncomfortable feeling,because you know what it’s from and you know it’s not real so it just kind of feels like your watching an animusic video except none of the machines do anything and they just sit there while music some other music plays from afar

      Someone makes the threat look so real that it feels almost as though you could encounter it IRL? Like you could be walking around and suddenly this… thing that you know from the stories is walking around in front of you on it’s own power? Something impossible made possible? I don’t know, maybe the feel is indescribable, because what I feel in that moment, is horror.

    keeping elements of the original design whilst adding your own charm and style is already a real damn cool concept, but making them look like they could function in real life is an absurd quest that you somehow achieved near perfectly

    This is amazing. I've always thought that Baby's ability to inflate balloons with her fingertips was an oddly cool idea, and i love seeing it here. I also love the new approach, it really does highlight how different Baby is from the rest of the FNaF roster.

There are no proper words to describe how fantastical and beyond astonishing your work is. It's like watching a master's craftsmanship.     Admittedly one of the strangest lines in the franchise, but you've transferred it seamlessly into a fairly feasible design! I can certainly see a lot of your modelling and design improvements since, say, the Twisted endo showcase in terms of the joints and various similar components. I see some fairly considerable changes had to be made to the casing to make it actually functional, resulting in some sizable gaps, but unfortunately there's not a lot of Scott designs that don't have that issue, save for some of the thinnest models - Withered Foxy, Ballora, or the first two games' endos come to mind as examples of some of the least clipping. Just the nature of having such wide limbs without any arch to the actual limb structure. There's a lot of really neat mechanical systems in play, here, such as that eye setup, and I really like what you did with the faceplates to make them work, it's simple but effective - though the games do seem to imply the faceplates are also split in the middle, so you can take just the front half of the head clean off, or at least that's how all the masks-on-walls seem to work such as Blacktime Freddy in that UCN office or Ennard's own mask (and I _think_ there's a canon version of Baby's faceplates also split like this at some point in one of the games? Not sure if it's actually official though), though the seam for it isn't shown. This does also seem to be what the Funtime endoskeletons were kind of supposed to be, as well, as both Ennard and Yenndo (and the others but they're a lot harder to get the endos for) have only the single layer of coiled wires flush with the casings, and then inside that a faintly visible, static frame, which presumably keeps them from being a wobbly, jointless mess. Also explains the bigger components visible in them, though the wires on the official models are also meant to hide both the stuff that really shouldn't be there in the lore, and the stuff that isn't actually there in terms of game creation. That tangent aside, this is a really impressive one and your extra touch with the different animation definitely makes her feel a bit creepier in a different way to so many of the other characters. Eager to see what you do next as well!

    your capability to model such small and fine details amazes me. I have only been modeling for 2 years and I can not even begin to imagine modeling and rigging something like this. I am not exaggerating when I say you are my biggest inspiration when it comes to 3d stuff. Seriously, i said this before in previous videos but you never fail to impress.       Thank you! The problem with this eye mech design, unfortunately, is that if you have her look too far to the left or right, the eyes start to rotate at different speeds and she goes all wall-eyed. It’s not a rigging problem, it comes from the physics of the little arms that rotate the eyes. I’m proud of it, but I wouldn’t call it an optimal solution.

      I know it has nothing to do with the eyes, but its funny that the "Sphere" articulation is one of the only few options that can make it legs and arms move in any direction.

    I just noticed and really appreciate the ice cream dispenser actually dripping at 1:12 and 1:26. You cut absolutely no corners making these things seem actually mechanically feasible - from the Lefty video that first introduced me to your channel to all the other models you’ve crafted - and I can’t get enough of it ❤

    Seeing all of the mechanisms, the frame and joints was a pleasure to my eyes, so cool to see you’re using universal joints for the hands, a realistic mechanism for the eyes. The shell is another thing I loved to see, some parts are modified to make proper movement without clipping on other parts, AMAZING JOB as always.

    Honestly, I’d like to see what a realistic ennard from sister location looks like but not the way you’d done molten Freddy who was mostly just a bunch of wires with eyes, a mask, and two sets of “hands” which you portrayed so bloody accurately to realism so btw just bravo on that man that was awesome.
    Back on topic, I mean an ennard who looks humanoid and is compact or like the wires and what makes them up is more tightly kept together since they wanted to mimic a human body from what I’d heard hence why ennard isn’t more just a floppy noodle in vague humanoid shape. Personally I imagine a realistic sister location ennard to sport more FNAF 2 and 1 esc endoskeletons or maybe even security breach styled limbs and such as I don’t think the galvanized wire would work as well regarding making a humanoid pile of wires and mechanical parts.
    Another couple ideas for you in case you’d prefer something different:
    Realistic Chuck E. Cheese style endoskeletons for the withered animatronics from FNAF 2, I always image that withered Bonnie wouldn’t have an endoskeleton face that was so flat if you will. (Something sorta like the FNAF fan game called juniors for example)
    “Creation” from the joy of creation fnafgame but done in your style/realistic if you will
    Maybe a more realistic or in-your-style mangel from FNAF 2
    A personal favorite request for me would be for you to try and make Funtime Freddy from the count the ways book, personally I’d like to see a saw blade and such actually built into the endoskeleton instead of how the usual animations portray these tools just sticking out from places where other mechanical portions already are.

    I like the sound design choice of using stepper motors for the movement here, as opposed to the brushed motors with triggers seen in the older models. Gives it a more "advanced" feel.

    Most animators will add just bars with balls connecting them and call that machine, but you actually put a lot of work into your designs

    I simultaneously love and hate how a single drop of ice-cream dripped from the spout and landed onto the metal frame. I love it, because the detail of such a small thing is impressive, but I hate it, because my inner perfectionist is going absolutely crazy over the *single drop* that missed.

    This is so cool how your love for robots inspired you to make fnaf robots but if they were real. This is so cool, and has inspired me to think more about making or desinging fnaf robots but with real knowlegde of robot technician. (obviously just for fun and not 100% accurate) Excited tyo see what you do next. Also the springlock animatronics are a realy cool cosept for this.💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💝💝💝💝

    I can see not only the helium tanks, but also the ice cream dispenser. Honestly, I thought the helium tanks would be small ones located in her forearms while the ice cream dispenser is located inside her abdomen.

    I like the detail of her eyelids being black rubber corrugated semi-sphere shapes that compress like an accordion when they open. Makes much more sense than the original design

    Going by the way she reacted when her face plates opened and how calm and relived she seemed when thay closed makes it seem like opening them is uncomfortable for them witch makes sense and seems cool.

    If you ever intent to make an animated series based on the FNAF books or the Fazbear Frights series, do it. This is some of the best and most realistic FNAF animations I've ever seen!

    I've always felt that all of the SL animatronics are very unrealistic. All of the unnecessary wires make up their endoskeletons, and even the faceplate mechanic. This model fixes most of my issues for circus baby. A more scaled down amount of wires, and a smart capture system. Just a few gripes about it. Firstly, as I've already said, the faceplate system has always felt useless. It would be much more effective if someone were to just lift the head piece off to have much more access to the head mechanisms. This complaint doesn't apply for the torso though, as it has the capture system. Perhaps make the head into one solid piece with one cut through it so that it can easily be taken off and reattached. Secondly, the extending and retracting system for the 'claw'. I feel that the giant sissor lift-like extendor is too thin and flimsy. It seems like it would snap into two the first time it's used. Maybe make it thicker and stronger to support the weight of a human body. I think we should also thicken the claw, as it seems like it would also snap. Thirdly, the claw seems like it can only reach adults. I'm pretty sure that Circus Baby is ment to be capturing children. Fouthly, I think that kids would be very startled at the sight of this giant girl opening up her chest cavity revealing most of her endoskeleton along with the way her head tilts back lifelessly. Maybe make it so her head doesn't do that, and make the inside of her torso into a small metal 'room' of sorts. This eliminates another problem of the body being hidden. Without something covering up the slight separation in her chest, it would be very clear that there's a dead body in there. Especially with blood that would likely be seeping out. Lastly, as it transitions from the endoskeleton render back to the suited render, you can see the person for scale inside of circus baby. They look all crushed up and stiff, which looks cool. But.. how? Maybe make a mechanism that pulls their limbs into the torso so they can't stick out and prevent the chest from closing. Maybe make it so the 'door' on the metal 'room' that I mentioned earlier helps keep these limbs along with the already mentioned system to pull said limbs inside. And.. That's all of my gripes for now. I hope this helps, as it may be able to help you on future projects too. It would be cool to see a revised circus baby, but that would probably be time consuming and not worth it. I wish you luck though, and maybe you can apply these principles on the other SL animatronics if you want to make them as well. I hope you cave a good day (or night)!

      For what it's worth, I have justifications- or at least, explanations- for several of your gripes. Here are my attempts to address what I can- quotes from your comment are paraphrased for brevity, instead of being exact.
      Firstly, 'the faceplate system has always felt useless': It is only there because I was trying to avoid changing the design, especially on the outside, and only change the detail work on the inside of the animatronic. Useful or not, the opening faces are a big part of the Sister Location designs' identity, to remove it would lose the essence of the original which I was trying to preserve.
      Secondly, 'the scissor lift is too thin and flimsy': It doesn't quite come across in the video just how tight of a balancing act modeling the inside of the torso was. The bars of the scissor lift are just about as thick as I could possibly make them, any more and it would push the resting position of claw so far forward that the chest cavity would no longer be able to accommodate the victim.
      Thirdly, 'the claw seems like it can only reach adults': The claw can actually be angled downward, but there is a limit to how far down it goes before it bumps into the skirt. If I were to animate a capturing scene, I would simply have Baby lean forward and crouch her legs to lower the claw as needed.
      Fourthly, 'kids would be startled at the sight of the opening, maybe make the inside less unsightly by covering up the mechanisms with a "metal room" ': This comes down to the issue of space: I simply can't not afford to lose any more space in there, at all. It's already really pushing being able to fit everything in there with enough room for even a small child. The idea of some kind of seal on the torso panels to hide the gap isn't bad, though, I might incorporate that if I use this model again.
      Lastly, 'maybe make a mechanism that pulls in limbs so they can't stick out': Once again, there really isn't room for something like that, but what isn't shown (because the outer shell is removed for that part) is that when the torso lowers, the side panels also swing shut, pushing in from the sides and forcing the victim to get their arms and legs out of the way.
      But at the end of the day, this is a sci-fi robot, and there's only so much you can do to make a fundamentally unrealistic concept look feasible.
