  • "There's no 'I' in team" is a saying most anyone who has ever played an organized sport has heard. The 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team had to learn that the lesson on their way to greatness. This video which consists of three videos found on TH-cam attempts to show the viewer the importance of understanding the concept of team - which is something applicable to not only sports teams but also to your work and your family. A man who aspires to be a servant and not focus on himself will is on the path to become an uncommon man.

I’m in Canada and I still believe that this Miracle on Ice team’s gold medal victory at the 1980 Winter Olympics was huge. So much bigger than Canada beating the Soviets in the 1972 Summit Series. Team Canada was expected to blow out the Soviets while 1980 US team weren’t even given a soot at a medal. This was the biggest ever “ David vs Goliath” upset in the history of modern sport.

I love to hear Esposito talk about the Summit. Canada was supposed to dominate and ended up winning but the USA beating THIS Soviet team was a dream. Even the Soviets say 1980 was thier best team ever. One night, one game, A series and the US loses 4-1. One night, one game.

I can still remember at 8 years old the crowd chanting U S A. It was the greatest sports experience and Patriotic moment that I have ever watched. The movie "Miracle" was such a perfect telling of this performance. It makes me tear up every time because I can still hear the crowd chanting. The younger generation has lost patriotism in our country but hopefully they will find it.

I always loved this movie - so well done, not only because of the story. Kurt Russell did a truly wonderful job portraying Herb Brooks.
One little mentioned scene in the movie you can also see in the real life Olympic video? After this team of *KIDS* won this particular game, you see Herb almost immediately leave the team area near the rink and go into the back area.
*That* shows you the true character of Herb Brooks - even though *he* had been the last player cut from a previous Olympic USA hockey team, he wanted the day/moment these kids won to be about *THEM*. Not him as the coach, but about those kids.
How many other coaches today would show that lack of ego and place the kids first? I would bet not many.

I don’t know if I’m right nor not but I seem to think that back then these athletes were like really good players who tried out for the teams and now then it’s like professional players of a sport. Kinda like an all star game for the olympics. I mean how many teams in the world could play basketball with the dream team of the 90s and really compete on a high level as they do all year around? Wouldn't say warped because eventually other countries introduced pros which you put a 28 year old pro vs a 20 year old college kid you can't compete. Now what the Soviets did and what you see in basketball is their league is considered amateur but also they hand picked players to play on CSKA in the KHL which helped them to develop such chemistry as well as development in the Soviet system the national team played in.

The crazy part about the way Herb Brooks was hard on this team is amazing. He made them believe they could do something they didn't even believe in themselves without saying it. This would never happen in 2022. Brooks would be fired. But if you go back and look at different sports movies that were actually true, each coach had to break that team down to make them better...i.e. Hoosiers, Remember the Titans and now Miracle. It was close to the movie "Vision Quest". A friend once told me after a fight with a guy who everyone thought was the toughest guy in my town (Gloucester NJ) how he won that fight. He said "You have to be willing to get crazier than him". I never forgot that. Isn't that what we all just witnessed in Miracle? Each of us who had the chance to watch this game against the Russians (Who were beating most NHL teams) had no idea how the "Miracle" actually happened. This game against the Russians was only the Semi finals game. Team USA had to beat Finland to win gold. 42 years ago this happened and we still talk about it today.

pissed me off. i lived in minnesota (minneapolis) and was heading home to watch the delayed broadcast in 1980. listening to music when it was interrupted with an 'olympic update'. i quickly switched stations so as not to spoil my evening.
next station. first words i heard. USA 4 Russia 3
    goddamn it!!
    still a joy to watch

@@TommygunNG okay but you need to ask yourself: the fact that he says “that’s all gentlemen” after the player having said who he plays for, what kind of iconic moment did you think I had here? That means that you took my comment so literal that infact it was you that had an iconic moment here 😂

The difference between a good coach- Craig, and a GREAT coach. Believe in the leader's lead, especially when it doesn't make sense. See the vision, ask what it takes to be better; to be elite; to be a champion. Eruzione somehow saw what Herb was after despite excruciating pain and physical exhaustion. 1 powerful leader emerged and the genius of another was confirmed.
